    The AP is actually weatherproof. However I did not see the need for its placement there. They are more suited to go under eves to be fair and could of gone outside the main building and provided plenty of coverage. Also, as it was just a single unit, it would of come with its own POE injector and unless you were planning to expand, there was no need for that POE hub.

    That first job was painful to watch and looked a right mess at the end Jordan, sorry. As mentioned elsewhere in the comments, that is not an access point that's rated to be fully exposed to the elements like that. Ubiquiti make outdoor specific access points (that are cheaper than the AC Pro too!), that are designed in such a way that it would also have saved that mess of an unnecessary Wiska box installation too. Definitely reconsider going back and redoing that with a UAP-AC-M, much better form factor for that job and designed to be fully outdoors.

It'll give it IP65 protection and just look like a light fitting / bulkhead.! (I'd suggest the WHT on the code as that'll include the white decorative trim! Don't have to use it, but looks a bit nicer.!). (I've done this for several customers when they've come in to the trade counter with this issue). Yup, this is the wrong AP, only two of this range have a stated rating and this is an IP54, which, at best only tolerates some dust or light splashes. So it’s fine for a porch but will not survive in an unprotected environment. There are outdoor APs in the UniFi range and this not one of them. This will definitely have to be replaced although I am interested in how long it will take before it goes legs up! 😊

    Not only is that AP not designed for that use, should have been a UAP-AC-M or UAP-AC-M-PRO but you bought a single unit, it includes a POE injector so no POE switch required. Not a good data install, to be completely honest.

  • @alexanderbuckland
    @alexanderbuckland3 жыл бұрын

    1. As everyone says the AP is not outdoor rated. 2. Is that network cable UV protected? All the outdoor cables I use are black for UV protection, the other colours including grey eventually crack and split in sunlight. 3. Surge protection is not required for outdoor PoE, although it is recommended. 4. An 8 port switch is incredibly overkill for this application and costs the customer money unnecessarily. 5. If you only have one network cable terminated you should replace the unused keystone with a blanking plate. I love the videos overall, but you really need to do proper research before putting installs in or content out.

    As a few people have said, those APs are not rated for open outdoor environments, the instructions do say this. You’ve got potential overheating issues, UV breakdown of the plastic (yellowing) and also water ingress - they’re probably moisture resistant at best. Ubiquiti do sell IP rated APs and this needs to be changed for one. It’s not about one-upmanship but as an IT engineer I’ve installed many of these and just some advice which you need to know 👍🏻

CP is used to tell the car how much current is available, and for the car to tell the EVSE to turn power on. You should see 12VAC from CP to earth.

    I have installed many UI based systems here in the US. It's not a wifi extender, its a full access point. That access point isn't made for direct wet environments and isn't IP rated as such. They are only made for use outside in a in sheltered environment (under a porch for example) that isn't in direct spray areas. The transmitters are way to strong and will over power the receiver in the Anderson. If anything at least put the AP in a plastic outside waterproof box. The signal will work fine, and unit will work for more than a few months in the rain. Or better yet you can get an outdoor rated AP that would be much better fit for this application. Surge protection really isn't needed as its floating and not tied to earth anywhere, also the Ethernet spec has isolation built in by design. If it was tied to a PC out there with another ground point, then yes there would be much larger differential in grounds and surge protection could be used. If lightning hits it, a surge protector will be vaporized along with the Anderson. Also you have to make sure that any surge protection won't trigger based on POE voltages on the link. Keep up the good work Jordan.

    You don't have to use the mounting brackets with wiska boxes, you can spray and screw through the holes in the corners of the box where the lid is screwed shut. Might need a thinner screwdriver or bit to fully tighten and reach the back. Still doesn't affect ip rating and makes a better fixing then brackets. Hope this helps👍

That Ubiquiti AP isn't Outdoor rated and will fail with moisture buildup (please update to the UAP-flexHD, which is Outdoor rated), also if you're doing an outdoor AP please add an isolator / surge disconnect to the POE lines. (First portion of video)

    You don’t necessarily need a lightning surge protector on the WAP it is belt and braces though if going directly in to a PoE switch. Save the expensive switch and sacrifice the protector. If using an injector then surge protector and injector cost roughly the same so no point really. In reality though unless you are buying certified surge protectors to the the correct lighting protection level then it’s just a gamble, the surge protectors get real expensive fast going down this route. However have a look at Rolling Sphere Method for lightning protection. The tree, wall, charger would be the first to be struck as the WAP is within the shadow of the sphere and not the sphere itself which all above mentioned components/items would form the circumference off. Keep up the great work.

    I would rethink that outdoor wifi install. As others have said, that Ubiquiti AP is not designed for outdoor use. Also, it would be fairly trivial to take that AP off the wall and plug straight into the customer's network. I would look at putting an outdoor rated AP on the outside wall of the main building, high enough to make it difficult to access from the ground. That way you lessen the risk of someone fiddling with it and getting access to the customers network.

    That access point is not waterproof. It is designed to be installed in semi-outdoor conditions with shelter from rain and direct sunlight. You also didn't need to install a PoE switch, as that access point comes with a PoE injector. The cabling isn't externally rated and there's too much excess. Cmon, terminating a data line with an RJ45 plug isn't difficult. Usually, I really enjoy watching these videos but that AP is going to die very soon, potentially bringing that switch with it. PoE switches usually also need to be earthed separately, especially if the lines are going in an outdoor environment. You should be using an outdoor-rated, shielded (not necessarily armored) cable if going outdoors with PoE.
