Repairing A Washed Out Culvert From Flash Floods

Repairing a washed out culvert from flash floods. This was where we added the second culvert a few months ago. Last week we had a crazy storm come through and dump about 6" of rain in an hour so we had lots of flash flooding. Logs and debris clogged up these pipes and ran over the road again washing out around the new pipe and undermining the road a little bit. I dug out the mud and place some base rock and rip rap then dumped about two yards of concrete over it so hopefully now it will hold up to the next one. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #FlashFlood

    I worked for a local county government for 32 years in the role of stormwater management engineer and had to deal with residents all the time on various drainage issues. I always emphasized that culvert pipes need to be checked regularly for blockages, especially when heavy rains are in the forecast. And regardless of the size of the culvert installed, there's always the possibility of a storm overtopping the culvert, even if it is functioning at 100 percent capacity. Hence, make sure that there is adequate overland conveyance for such an event.

    The pipes can only drain 100% volume, anything above that gets backed up. Debris shrinks volume and that is what it is. Might should have told that guy for a monthly maintenance fee you will drive by and make sure the pipes are not blocked off. 😁

    It has to be extremely aggravating to deal with people to hard-headed to realize how cheaply wrong they could be going the cheappo route on culvert drains. I had to deal with similar types in my chosen profession and I'm tickled pink I'm now semi-retired and I can pick and choose who I do work for. I love to tell my favorite customers about those I literally fired telling the jackasses I'd didn't need the aggravation of doing business with them. Not one has ever had a problem with my stories. They usually tell me their versions and some I've ended up being friends with on occasion.

It is more of minnow pond than anything.. but it was never done right and it always leaks after spring rain until it equalizes. I am sure the Elm tree growing next to it has a root sucking up water, but that tree makes great shade, so I am hoping not to tear in out in order to fix the leak. Thank in advance !!!

I thought he was going to come in some over the culvert but he didn't so I'm thinking I need to extended and add some first then add something around it to help with washout so the dirt doesn't wash out and cause the concrete drive to collapse but can you tell me would you have use the same method and materials on the side where the water comes in to the pipes as you did here on the other side?

  • @eliteearthworksllc

    @eliteearthworksllc

    @@sam5miy yes I like using the rip rap or larger rocks on the ends. It slows the water down and doesn’t allow it to cut or wash out the dirt at the ends of the pipe. The bigger rock is harder to move and by slowing the water down it can’t do as much damage that way
