Today I work on a violin that has already been "repaired" by someone else! I put a new bass bar and change the lower block. I also have to make a fingerboard and all the fittings.

I forgot to ask, in a previous video you repaired a crack using an edge clamp. For this repair you used a different type of clamp, was there a particular reason for this?

I've noticed you don't like the built-in bass bar but I haven't heard why. Could you explain why please or just point me to the video where you've probably already explained it. Also this is the best violin repair and build channel I've seen imho.

Thank you for the video. I enjoy watching you work. I am curious as to what characteristics of this violin made you consider “saving” it. Any particular wood quality or construction technique that drew your attention?

I liked the wood quality of the back, the scroll is made very good and has a nice varnish. So why not give it a chance?!?!?
I wish a had a violin like that to work on right now, it's so fun to work on violins like that but they'are very hard to come by in my country, sigh..

Thank you for your kind words Joshua! No I don't but I think that I should. I try to use the vacuum cleaner when possible so I don't have to blow the dust away. Any kind of dust is bad for the longs and nose I think!

Do you ever use willow on the corners or just spruce? Do you prefer one over the other?

For my own instruments I use willow. I like it more as it is easier to work with, but on restorations I use the same wood as the original.
What is the purpose of corner blocks? I don't understand how the C-bout and fragile corners add to the design of the instrument. When I look at the structure, it seems like it would be just as well to follow the smooth curve you see on the inside of the instrument and leave out the corners altogether. Do they serve a real purpose in acoustics or in adding strength, or are they a purely aesthetic choice, for looks only?

This is a very big and interesting discussion you are opening there! The violin needs its C-bout because otherwise you can't reach the strings separately with the bod. You see that the bridge is arced and not flat like the guitar. There are experimental instruments that have the shape you describe. I think that this smooth shape could also work (like it does with the Viola da Gamba family) but it is tradition to make the violi family with its pointy corners. the Viola da Bracio, the instrument from which the violin originates has also these sharp corners.
Quick question If I wanted to apply to Cremona's violinmaking school… Do i need some kind of musical studies or they are taught in the school itself? Any special requirements? I already make models as a hobby but i don't know if its useful or worth mentioning Thanks in advance

When I joined the school there where no requirements for music or instrument/wood working. If you had violinmaking experiance you could skip the first or the first and second year. Don't hesitate to check their site or send theme an e-mail.
Maestro, I have her sister in pieces on my desk. How much it worth ? Should I make it new bass bar ? The lower block is awfully skew made, the back is some machine finished but the top is manually rough cut altogether with bass bar. No label.

Most violin-makers use spruce for the blocks and linings. I use willow.
If a glue joint is stronger then the wood, why do you have to reinforce the top with cleats?

Maestro Kimon, Why would the top be carved so as to create an integral bass bar? Was, or is, this method believed to produce a better sounding instrument? Also, can we assume that this instrument is of less than collectable relative value? If it is, would there be harm to the value if the top were cleaned of varnish and then re-finished? Hello Max. This way of curving the top as to create an integral bass bar was a working method used in Germany from approx.. 1875 to 1950. This was done because it is much easier and faster to make the bass bar as part of the top than make a separate one that has to fit properly, glued in place and shaped. The problem is that as this bass bare has no tension it doesn’t support the weight of the strings and on the long term the top will deform. Not the case on this instrument fortunately. This method was used for the budget instruments so no collectable value for this one. Revarnishing the top would be a lot of work that wont pay off as the value of this instrument isn’t high enough.
