I've watched several violin restoration videos and every time that a top is pried off, I get nervous. Just listening to the sounds as old glue is cracked and split makes me shiver.

You can use dry soap on the thin knife. Traditionally thin glue has intentionally been used to enable it to come off easily with minimum damage.

@@old-violin-international. Hello. Can you give me a formula for the hide glue mix you, for the centre joint for example, and for when you put the top plate back on , which I believe is intentionally not strong. Do you have any idea what caused the centre joint to open ? Thank you.

For both - centre joint and to put the top plate back one - we use the same hide glue. A damage like this is mostly caused by influences through temperature and humidity.@@californiadreamin8423

@@old-violin-international Thank you for replying so quickly. I’ve just fitted a new base bar to my second fiddle bought in about 1974. My cat knocked it over and I’ve had to re glue 2 cracks from the corners of the ebony insert at the bottom. I’ve fitted 2 small cleats as reinforcement. I hope to put the top back soon. It does not have corner blocks on the upper bouts. It seems sound and strong, but I wonder if I should fit willow blocks while I can. What do you think ?

Great restoration, very masterful! There are not many channels of female restorers, and it is very nice to see craftswomen at work too. I was wondering whatever happened to the 'fake' label and the restoration of the fingerboard? Have I missed these bits? Wonderful workshop too!

Magnificent restoration report of this violin, made according to the rules of the art...!! surprised at the addition of the head patch, which is so big, and not having used the file to be on the flat...is the plaster mold made before? where is a "standard" mold? these techiniques with the bag of wheat are very instructive to learn how to repair...it is also true that to glue the top, 4 hands are easier than 2... well done again! Magnifique reportage de restauration ce ce violon, faite dans les règles de l'Art...!! surpris de l'ajout du patch de la tête, qui soit aussi gros, et ne pas avoir utilisé la lime pour être sur du plat...le moule en platre est il fabriqué avant ? ou est un moule "standard" ? ces techiniques avec le sac de blé sont très intructives pour apprendre à réparer...il est vrai aussi que pour recoller le dessus, 4 mains sont plus faciles que 2... bravo encore !

A scalloped fingerboard, how could that happen? The instrument was made by a master but had suffered much abuse and had so many cracks yet its integrity has been restored and now it sounds so well throughout its range.

Are you saying that, bc you personally didn’t see a tuning process going on or use of a tuner, that those shops are deficient compared to this one?? That seems very weird to me. There are many string players who have perfect pitch or strong relative pitch who don’t need tuners....out of the three orchestras I played in, all three had concertmasters with perfect pitch, and one oboe player with perfect pitch. Also, other channels may tune before they play to show the results of workmanship. I’m certainly glad that I don’t need to be shown that a tuning process has taken place to understand that no professional string player would _EVER_ play an out of tune instrument in a video going out to millions of people! My goodness!

@@voraciousreader3341 I am not sure why one might feel so touchy about putting on or not putting on a fine tuner on the A string. Maybe it depends of which part of the globe one comes from. But for example here in North America, it is rare that one adds a second fine tuner. We usually have the one on the E string as it is so hard to keep it at perfect pitch; and getting the perfect turn of the peg each time is almost impossible. But on the more responsive longer A string, we rarely see it, in our neck of the wood. Therefore it is quite normal that the viewer would ask about the fine tuner on the A. It has NOTHING to do with the skill of anyone! Not everybody has bad intentions on KZread😉😊
