Repair E3 F5 Error Whirlpool Cabrio Washer

Make sure you read this entire description. Two IMPORTANT tips below that you DON'T want to skip!!
Repair -- NOT REPLACE -- a defective lid lock causing E3 F5 errors on a Whirlpool Cabrio Washer. For such an expensive machine, the engineers sure cheaped out on the lid lock sensor. I show you how to disassemble the mechanism and fix it for about $2.00.
It's now been over FOUR YEARS since I posted this video. Washer is still running flawlessly! But I will emphasize: the little packet of bulb grease is THE secret to this fix. DO NOT SKIP IT! When I shot this video it was actually the SECOND time I took it all apart to fix the problem. The first time I did NOT use the bulb grease, and it was less than a month later that I was taking it apart again. Again, DON'T EVEN START THIS IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE BULB GREASE! It's $2.00 at O'Reilly's Auto. Look for the little packet of VersaChem Sure Connect Bulb Grease, usually up on a display at the cash register.
Added tip from Mike Halsey:
Hit those contacts with some CRC QD electronics cleaner (www.walmart.com/ip/CRC-Electr...) and wipe them shiny clean with a Q-tip before applying the bulb grease. Thanks, Mike!
A few of you have asked for my PayPal or some way to pay me. There's really no need -- I shot this just to bless folks. The thanks I've received in the comments is all the payment I need. But if you're really determined, then please pay it forward! Pay for the car behind you at the drive-up. Hand a Jackson or two to a single mom who looks like she could really use a break. Drop a few extra in the offering at your church, or if you don't have a church, feel free to give to mine: fwcchurches.com/online-giving/
God bless!!

It is July 2023 when I am eriting this and all I can say is thank you for saving me so much money and time. I e been wrestling with this f5 error for the past year and finally was brave enough to take the dive of fixing this problem. I cant believe its this tiny 5 cent piece. Now this thing works like a champ. For those of you who are intemidated, try not do be. It honestly took me 1/2 hour or less to go step by step. Even faster to reassemble.

My 10 pm repair worked perfect !!!! Never good when the wife says the washer is broken. I googled the code being thrown, found your video. I didn’t use the grease. I didn’t have any. Put I did remove the contacts, scraped gently with a micro screw driver and cleaned with electronic spray cleaner. I put everything in back together and success!!! Thank you!!!! I did order a new one on Amazon as a back up. Other video’s just show replacing the defective unit. I loved that yours had, how to repair the defective part.

I can’t thank you enough! My washer was just 2.5 yrs old when this part failed. The self diagnostic test pointed to the lock and I couldn’t believe the price for this very cheaply made part from the company (I estimate the material cost at $5). Really, given the moisture and incredibly cheap materials I don’t understand why they would do something like this. I wouldn’t have tried to repair the part myself using my auto ignition coil grease without you having blazed this trail here. It’s been two months since I did this and it’s worked flawlessly since. Thank you again, not just for saving me some money but it just feels so good to do something that most people wouldn’t attempt.

@@bkhavityoway23 It was about $180 for the part. I called Maytag and they quoted me $300 for the repair. That included the wiring harness. There we’re cheaper alternatives on eBay and Amazon but I was not sure they could be made to work. Since I did the cleaning, it has gotten stuck 1 or 2 times. I just move the lock in and out 30 or 40 times and it works fine again.

Thank you so much for making this video! I have a Kenmore Elite HE 700 series washer. The repairman has been to my house literally 6 times trying to fix the lid lock. He never repaired what was wrong. All he did was change out parts. The washer would work for a few weeks then I would have the same problem again. Last night it happened again! Mind you I have a service contract but each time I call for a repair I have to pay a fee of $100.00. To keep the service contract I have to pay $69.99 per month. I could have purchased a new washer for what I have spent on this crap! I followed your instructions and repaired the lid switch, not change out a part! Now my washer is working correctly. Needless to say I am canceling the service contract! Again, thank you so much for the video!

Dude, this worked perfectly! Saved me probably $300. Bulb grease cost me a whopping $1.79! First time I tried it I was too gentle bending the metal contact tabs down. Did it again and moved them one at a time, (checked the movement of the first against the unbent second tab, then did the second to match the first) total movement about 1 mm. Worked like a charm. Thanks for sharing this SO SO much!

What a great video. Our Whirlpool Cabrio quit working, and we were on deadline to get some laundry done. Might have taken weeks to wait on a service call appointment, would have taken days to get a replacement switch. I had no idea how the Cabrio came apart. You made it easy to fix the washer in about 30 minutes, no parts needed other than a packet of bulb grease (which now cost $1.69 a packet at the local auto parts store), and I had the right tools lined up before I started. Many thanks for your thorough and insightful video. I did skip the step of removing and bending the little contact prongs, but it seems it was unnecessary. Thank you again.

After some water leaked out the top when we had the washer on it's front while replacing the broken water pump (DR error), we started having the E3 F5 errors on our Whirlpool Cabrio Washer. I was thinking the water may have shorted out the lid lock mechanism somehow, and then found this video. As others have stated, it took a couple of tries (and we did use the bulb grease both times), but it finally worked after also using a hair dryer to dry out the sensor and lid lock control board. Mr. Petereit, Thank you for a wonderful and instructive video! You saved us ~350-400 dollars easily! One comment for anyone else with a similar locking problem. This fix didn't initially cure the F5 error on our machine. We had to turn the power on and pull the locking mechanism into the 'locked' position, then turn the machine on with the lid open. this had to be done delicately, because we hadn't fully re-assembled the top portion back to the base of the machine. This allowed the machine to appropriately 'reset' itself and know that the locking was working correctly again. Once that was done, it appears to be functioning fine!

THANK YOU MARK.... Kenmore Top-Load washer has the identical lid lock mechanism. I just followed your step by step instructions & the E3 F5 problem is solved. My situation was a little different leading up to the error codes. Had to replace the pump after it started a cycle & had water in the tub. When I tipped the washer over to work on the pump , the mechanism must have got water in it & caused the already worn fingers to not make contact. After putting the dielectric grease in & bending the fingers down a little, no more error. Thanks again!!

Worked like a charm. Thank you so much for making this video. I also used a electrical contact cleaner on the described components.

Great video! I was having to put a slight downward pressure on the lid to get the washer to engage the lock at start up. Thanks for the fix, now it just works like it’s supposed to!

Another satisfied customer! Our washer was showing the error, which is a true emergency with two kids 2 and under at home. 25 minutes and a trip to Autozone later (I dropped a screw behind the washer, which added time), we’re back up and running! You are a god!

Awesome! That's why I did this. There was NO WAY I was going to pay $150 for a new switch. I got this washer for $400 in Lowe's clearance section. The note on the clearance tag said that it had a faulty lid switch replaced. When the new switch failed in less than a year, I decided I would study how it worked so I could program one of those tiny $7 Arduino boards to fool the computer into seeing a working switch there. Couldn't believe how cheap they designed that switch, how they left it completely unprotected from the high-moisture environment and how easy it is to fix.

This helped me so much! My washer is a year and a half old and I was so upset it would cost me a lot to fix it. I was so confused, because it works fine for the beginning of the cycle, but messes up on the spin cycle! Hopefully this will fix it for me!!

Thank you for this tutorial! After taking my washer apart and trying to bypass the broken switch, your video helped me see that there are pieces missing from the switch itself. I have a replacement coming and will definitely use your tips to get better use out of the new one.

Mine is doing the same. I think it's an alignment issue. I wiggled the thing and it just worked. If it does it again in the next load, I'll redo the screws and clean up stuff to make sure it all sits right.
