Repair a Swagtron Swagger 5 (Xiaomi M365) Electric Scooter battery: Soldering tips for 18650 battery

In this video, I will show you how to repair a Swagtron Swagger 5 battery pack. All electric scooters of this size virtually have the exact same size battery pack: Xiaomi M365, Lime, Bird. The Swagger 5 is especially similar (if not the exact same) with the Xaiomi M365. This battery issue is an extremely common problem with all electric scooters. I will also show you some tips to solder 18650 cells with a nickel strip. The same process can be done on an electric bike battery.

You really know your stuff. I've been using mine for two weeks now, and your point about the board leads me to seriously consider opening up the bottom and putting cable ties as yours has it to at least slow down, if not prevent, the nickel strip separation that you had to repair with yours. It's an otherwise excellent scooter, and I intend to use it for several years.

@@georgelopez4663 you can replace the battery on any scooter. It's just about replacing the cells. you can even add a second, parallel battery. watch some tutorials. The BMS looks dumb on this scooter, i would replace it with something safer and less likely to break. There are a lot of good cells in even a bad battery that can be salvaged. you can even revive dead cells by jumping them with the same voltage they are rated for.

Nice repair sir. Should hold up well with the double layers and those relief corner bends. I have a spot welder for making large packs, but on smaller tool,/appliance/mobility packs I still find it easier and faster to solder. A few tricks I have to minimize cell heating and contact resistance: -scuff the contact surfaces with fiberglass scratch pen or fine sandpaper; lightly pre-tin the mating surfaces -slightly chill the cells short time in the fridge or with a puff of freeze spray on the joint just prior to soldering (I use inverted canned air, but be very careful of frostbite!) -hottest iron setting, clean tinned tip, leaded solder, extra flux - all to maximize wetting and minimize soldering contact time to a few seconds. A powerful iron also helps to avoid premature cooling/ pooling - (the finished joint should be smooth surface and not resemble an arc weld.) -hold the tab down with a sharp pointed non-metallic stick (eg a kebob skewer or toothpick) to maximize direct tab to tab contact in the joint -as soon as solder turns solid remove the stick and dip a cotton swab /q-tip in a small bowl of alcohol and immed place on the joint to suck the heat out, then use it to clean off the flux Thanks for the vid. That scooter runs nicely!

Thank you. This is the first time I have seen the batteries insulated using foam and tape instead of heat shrink. I have a Swagtron e-bike and my batteries no longer charge to the full 42 volts. I'm going to inspect them.

Helpful repair video, thanks. Although I wouldn't recommend wrapping up the entire battery pack with foam sheeting is necessary as it will act as a thermal blanket and retain heat which may shorten the lifespan of the cells especially within hot or warm climates. 3" x 1" x .5mm foam strips shall suffice in providing generously adequate shock protection.

I'm considering upgrading the battery on my hiboy s2 pro. But I saw a video on the ninebot where the battery was upgraded with a higher amperage battery but the phone app does not recognize the new size of the battery. Does the xaiomi scooter exhibit the same battery display like the ninebot? Also the generic batteries require data hook up up to connect to the scooter that have this cable. As a curious note, since the ninebot sees the old battery size. What happens with the scooter when the phone app see 0% when there is actually say 20% as an example.

Good video. Just one thing, you're applying to much heat to the battery. I know there is a nickel strip between the cell and the soldering iron. Nickel is a good conductor of heat. I repaired my broken battery terminals with tinned copper braid. It has been working for 2 years. Then the BMS failed a year ago. It would not charge the battery at all, but still powered the motor. I replaced the BMS with a generic 10s one and so far so good. I also added an external 10s4p pack to more than double the range. I charge them separately. It works well because I don't connect packs of different voltage together. BTW the front tire on mine was shit from day 1. It constantly leaked. I replaced it with an airless tire like the rear and have had no other trouble

I find when working with Li-Ion most of our safety and quality protocols call for any tab that directly touches a cell to be Spot welded. Hot soldering iron has the possibility (limited of course) to ignite the li-ion cell. You never know when there might be internal unseen damage with a cell that will cause it to react to a hot soldering iron.

  • @fredspofford

That's why Li-Ion will soon go the way of HD DVD's when up against Blu-Ray with the Blu-Ray equivalent being Lifepo4 since they're superior in every way BUT don't explode into flames just because you looked at them funny the way Li-Ion most assuredly do.

  • @JeremyBreeden89

I’ve actually had a lithium ion 18650 cell explode right in my face before but luckily I always wear safety equipment when soldering any battery. I’ve been doing this for years and only had it happen one time and it had to be from something that was internally wrong with the battery like you suggested in your comment. The reason I say it must’ve been something internal is because I had already completely finished soldering the battery and it was just setting on the bench for about 2 minutes and I happen to notice the wrap started to peel away from the battery so not think I lean over it to look what’s going on and then boom 💥. I inspected my solder points after this happened and there was nothing out of the ordinary of every other one I had ever done. I just thought I’d share this because like you said the chances are there of the battery exploding especially if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Only 1 recommendation: use AT LEAST a 60W soldering iron (i suggest a cheap blue one with a simple temp. control system (a variable resistor)).(the problem of those soldering points is the temperature, since it's too cold the tin wont stick well (like the previous soldering), while, at around 325-375 c° the tin will melt instantly.
