This doorbell and Home Assistant are likely going to be my first steps into that word. I don’t really have any need for a suite of cameras so the Reolink NVR is way too extravagant. Is it possible to use Home Assistant to continuously record 24x7 footage from this camera to a NAS?

Question When setting up RTSP what is the stream quality you get at the NVR like frigate. Is it 2K 30FPS? also most RTSP streams have a live and sub stream. does this one have 2 streams? This is for using he live stream for 24/7 recording as it's full ress full FPS and the sub stream would be lower res and lower FPS for processing on your own device for motion or other events.

I really enjoyed your video and as an existing Reolink customer with their DVR I was all set to buy their WiFi video doorbell. Then, you showed its operating temperature range. I live in a northern plains state that regularly sees winter temps below 10F. I reached out to Reolink yesterday to ask about their plans to provide a different model with a lower operating range. They confirmed they have no such plans. Either their published temp range is pessimistic, or they have no desire to sell these products in northern North America zones.

  • @ThisSmartHouse

Yeah I got the same answer too. My marketing contact said the engineering team confirmed the low end. I have no idea what component on the BOM would make it that crazy of a temp. Usually that is a battery that causes that "high" of a low temp. I will report back next year if we get a cold snap here in the mid-midwest. Thanks for watching!!

  • @tecnologiaoficial

Honestly, you are overthinking it. This is never ever going to drop down to less than -10C - and I'll tell you why: it's running 24/7 so the components inside will be warm. Warm enough contained within the enclosure that this is basically going to keep it heated to a point where it will never drop. Don't trust me? Ask the channel owner to measure the operating temperature during cold weather and see... it will be pretty much constant because electronics heat up during operation. Unless you are installing this thing in a blast freezer, you will be fine.

What is the power rating of the wifi version when powered by 12-24V AC? I'm considering buying a 18V AC doorbell transformer, but the price differs depending on the power output of the transformer. Of course, I don't want to buy a 60W one if, let's say, 20W is enough. I don't have a reolink doorbell on hand yet to check it's power rating directly...

How does the video streaming through the app work? Is the video routed through their servers then to you, or is everything done locally and out of the cloud (even if you do not use their cloud storage service)? If this is the case, is video end to end encrypted?

  • @ThisSmartHouse

I believe if you stream from outside of your house it does pass through their servers (in the app). I would assume it is encrypted, but wether it is end-to-end, I will have to ask my contact there. There security page doesn't have a lot of detail: reolink.com/us/security/ If you wanted to control everything, you could route the video locally to your own NVR or steam via Home Assistant.

^ I’m new to all this as I don’t know much about POE and am trying to help my grandparents get a new doorbell to replace their old ring. But couldn’t a bad guy just cut the wires outside the home regardless if you have a wired or wireless doorbell ? I was thinking of researching a Poe/nvr but there Ethernet cable literally pokes out from the front of the house and wraps around to the side of the house were the power boxes are ? ( idk what’s it’s called) but if someone cuts that Ethernet cable from outside the house that stops the wi-fi. As for the power to the house in general couldn’t they just cut the wires to the outdoor power box? So in the end wouldn’t just a wireless doorbell be easier since a Poe could also be cut?

  • @ThisSmartHouse

This is a trade off of all security cameras. Yes, any non-battery powered cameras can have the power cut. Wifi cameras can be "jammed" knocking then off your network. The most secure cameras would be direct wired, connected to am NVR with a battery backup. It is all a trade off depending on where to live. You can pair the ReoLinks with a NVR, so if someone cut the camera, you would still have a recording.
