Listen, Gary did write this and it is a great song, so be thankful that the brotherhood is still putting it out there. Long live Gary Richrath, my favorite guitarist of all time, but enjoy what REO is still doing these days, helps keep Gary's memory alive. You have to admit Amato does kick some ass. Along with the Hitt man ok
Everyone goes on about Gary, rightly so, but Neal doesn't get the recognition he deserves as one of the all time greats on the keyboards!

I'm so lucky I got to see Speedwagon here in the UK a few years back, supporting Status Quo. I like Quo but I went mainly for these guys. Just an amazing show, and Neal did his thing effortlessly.
one of my favorite all time REO songs

It is mine. That and 157 Riverside Avenue. Two ulitmate classics by REO. Still rockin' out at 63. Love them!!!
One of REO's best ever boogie rock songs!!!!!
Even though Gary is not there, you've got to admit, this video is awesome. Gary AND Kevin together, made REO the best.
9/13/15 RIP Gary Richrath You will be greatly missed.
I grew up listening to this band. my favorite version of this song is on " you cant get what u play for". fucking rocks! kevin cronins voice sounds just as amazing live as it does on a studio album. and Gary is one of the most brilliant G tar players i have ever seen live. i think this band has been under rated thru the years. Thank u REO for getting me thru those tough teenage years. i still turn to u when my soul needs to hear great music.

Really great song! Always have loved it....
Just can't ever get too much of this song. Been rockin' out to it since early 70's!!! A classic Kevin!!!
Rip Gary As this song is not the same without his crisp licks ... No One can replace Gary .... Kevin Ride the storm out
you get a show with reo, every word to every song, chicks, drugs sex rock & canes
My 18 month old daughter's first concert she loved Oreo. She was concert bound from than on !
David holds the guard! Neal a legend as always!!
I first seen these guys in the 70's Would LOVE to see another one of their concerts1
Gary wrote this song...
Awesome guys, nice to hear the good old shit and it does sound cranking. Great job, keep that fire burning
Great mix
Can't tell me REO doesn't fucking rock, this song is one of Gary's best. Kevin and REO always does justice to Son of a Poor Man
spot on.
Yer right Neal is the only original band member. However, 2 albums pre date Ridin the Storm Out, REO Speedwagon and REO 2
Yes Gary was the main songwriter. This is a SAD VERSION of a Great SONG!!!!

This song isn't worth playing without Gary playing lead.

I Agree Donna and Kayla! Also Greg Philbin's Bass Lines were Way More Rocdkin'!

Scott, agree on both counts.....like Greg Philbin as well. Just can't listen to this song without Gary, it's like The Stones trying to play The Who or something insane like that! Imagine ZZ Top playing Stairway to Heaven...for me it's just plain wrong and painful to listen to! Richrath lived it, wrote it and rocked it and that's just the way it is.

We are definitely on the same page Kayla and Scott! Thanks for the backup here...because I tried to listen again this morning....just can't do this classic without the Classic that was within it....which of course was Gary. Richrath Rocked it, a he always did and always will, for me anyway! R&R!
Saw them in their 1970s

He was the R in REO Kevin! Couldn't agree more!
I Agree Donna and Kayla! Also Greg Philbins Bass Lines were way more Rockin'
Son of a Poor Man was a standard number they did in college bars back in the "Early" days. Bret Michaels of Poison once said REO was a harmless little power pop band. Whatta Putz REO could rock Poison of a stage!

Bret Michaels who the fuck.he's singing country now right? Poison was the little powerpoppers.

Poison is ass lol. Reo Speedwagon may not be heavy (as if that matters, also poison sure as hell isnt heavy) but their music has balls. Nothin but a Good Time has no balls.
Great version of a classic song. Better speed and more in the pocket than the original. Also like the accent stabs.. even if a couple sound suspiciously like Uriah Heep. lol
Her eyes were red as mine 🔴👃🏻🔴
Not the same without Gary.

Still sound good, but the video makes his voice sound naesly. He sounds a lot better live.

No, Gary wrote Son of a Poor Man in 1972, it was autobiographical. Bruce wrote several songs, this wasn't one of them. This was a Richrath classic. Didn't get much better than this.

Bruce wasn't even in the band in 1972
who wrote this song, was it murphy, it is very seldom covered, and , once again, no reference to terry lutrell,

Gary Richrath wrote it in 1972, it is about something that happened to him.

Gary wrote so many great REO songs. They still play this one all the time. Fans must like to hear it. It was worth listening to when Gary played lead. He was so underrated and deserved so much more credit and respect than some people give him ...
Enough of the crap, always like when the boys pull out some of the good old shit. Nice to here a new live version and of course its gonna be a little different and for me, I think its great. If you want to keep hearing the same old version just slap in a CD
I've heard a few stories about Gary being a jerk...hopefully only because of substance abuse, you know?

I read on a guitar forum from a man that said he was on the road with Gary for many years and said he was a down to earth man...something only certain people would know ... he was always smiling, enjoying living HIS dream...rest in peace Gary

I have read only a few. Believe me Dennis, the man wasn't a jerk. He was a truly gifted, centered and a very kind soul. No perfect (who is???) but a wonderful person, I knew him and can say that from experience. I don't say much about the past but you are on a lot of posts saying such nice things about him. Trust me when I say he was all that and so much more. Loud and Proud and he was the R in REO. Thanks Dennis for all the kind words and posts about him. Take care and be well!

Have you ever heard the saying "if you can't say anything nice...." Gary bashing is never really a good idea on these sites my friend. There are a lot of us who loved and respected him and some of us knew him.
This version sucks!!!
