Renovation Updates | New Home & Garden Projects

Welcome to our new series of vlogs where we will be renovating our early 1960's converted bungalow in the beautiful Kent countryside. This renovation will involve a lot of #DIY as we do like to get stuck in however we are not professionals in any way so these are not tutorials 😂. From experience renovating previous properties we know that we learn from our mistakes and pick up new tips, tricks and skills along the way. This is not going to be a quick turn around, we'll be doing this over the course of the next few years so thank you for coming along for the journey, hopefully we'll still have all our limbs, fingers and toes intact by the end of it 🤞🏼

ADVERTISING
As content creation is our business and how we earn our living you will see advertising in our content from time to time in different forms:
We are very selective about what brands we work with on paid/sponsored content creation and as a rule we don't work with any brand that we don't already or wouldn't spend our own money on. We are incredibly proud of all our brand partnership content and it will always be disclaimed in the most transparent way possible so you know exactly what is and 'AD'.
Because we don't work with a large amount of brands on sponsored content we do rely on our KZread ad revenue. Any adverts you watch during the duration of our videos will earn us a small percentage of 'ad revenue' from KZread and we really appreciate you watching the adverts in full (and not skipping them), but only if and when you can. We also know that time is precious so no pressure.
We also use 'Affiliate Links' in the description boxes below our videos and if you make a purchase via these links we will earn a small percentage of commission depending on the sale amount. Not all links are affiliate links but just assume they are.
Any items/links marked with '[AD - Pr products]' are products which have been 'gifted' from the respective brands without a contract for sponsored content. This is still classed as a form of advertising because nothing is ever "free", brands are gaining exposure to our audience by us featuring them, so these items are marked as 'AD' but we are under no obligation to feature these items. And as with our paid content, we never accept gifting/pr products from brands that we don't already or wouldn't spend our money on. If we have received a press discount on anything featured this will also be disclaimed.

If you’re handy with a sewing machine perhaps some black terry cloth towel fabric slip covers for the gym equipment that can be removed for washing instead of spray paint? Can’t wait to see the final garden make over!!!

The problem is a slip cover would move around. So they either need to be completely stripped of the old fabric and reupholstered with a black vinyl which can be wiped clean or sprayed. Spraying is the easier option which is why I’d rather do that but only if someone else has done it successfully, otherwise I’ll have to reupholster in black vinyl 🙃

The bifold installation from the previous owners…omg! Y’all have done a great job! I also follow Tokyo Llama - they remodeled an old Japanese house. The two of you are the only ones that are honest about budgets! Also, I once knew of two neighbors in court over bamboo. One neighbor planted it and it took over the neighbors area. They were smart to have it in the metal containers.

Oh gosh 🙈 I can totally see how that would happen though, Bamboo is a nightmare and it can affect/damage foundations of a home which could be costly and dangerous if left long enough 😳 We sighed a huge sigh of relief when we realised it was a solid steel container in the ground 🤣🙌🏼

There are two types of bamboo - running & clumping. From the looks of it, it was clumping bamboo in Emma’s garden. And you’re right - running bamboo is a nightmare and has no place in an urban garden.

The white flower in your garden is a Mandevilla. ☺️ I have them here as well here in Canada. It’s vining so you can trellis it. They will overwinter in warmer climates with no frost. You can also try potting it and overwintering it inside, just be sure to treat it for insects before you do it. ♥️

I love your home updates and your minimalist style. I live in San Diego, California and I am very much a minimalist. We had the pleasure of being able to have our home built. It is very modern even after 25 years living here and we did our own landscaping and since we live on a hillside that was quite a challenge. There is so much satisfaction in doing things on your own. I am a great fan of Ikea and do-it-yourself projects so our kitchen is what we call early Ikea. It was an adventure putting all the cabinets together ourselves. Keep up the great work and I totally enjoy watching you and Simon on your home renovation project.🥰

Hi Emma. I’m glad you were feeling better by the end of this video. When we renovated our stone holiday cottage,we chose to use many local suppliers and craftsmen as ,despite paying a little more, we felt that their customer service was more personal and that if there were any problems,we would receive a better response than with a large multi- store. Loving the ‘white border’ and especially the ‘flamingo’ trees and the white lavender. I love to see your renovation videos and I know you and Simon will have a beautiful home after you’ve finished.💖🌸

I doubt we’d re-sell the equipment but the walls will be wooden panelling so the seat pads at the least need to be changed. The grey frame doesn’t offend me so much because my treadmill has a bit of grey on it but the red and metallic silver is non-negotiable 😆

The plant with the beautiful white flowers that Simon bought is a mandevilla (dipladenia). I'm in zone 5b in Canada. In the early fall, before temperatures drop down to below freezing, I bring the plant in its container indoors to overwinter. I just keep it near a bright sunny window and continue to water it. A lot of the leaves started to turn yellow in January and fall off. I just pruned the entire plant down to about a foot tall and continued to water it about every ten days. Then in early June, I brought the plant back outside and it's growing beautifully. *Make sure to treat any plants for pests before bringing them indoors. Otherwise, put them somewhere indoors away from your other plants (sunny pool house would be an excellent location).

You’re kind to invite the birds to eat those berries but I don’t think they’ll be so discriminating with your berries in the same vicinity. I’d either move the bush for the birds away from your other berries or net the berries you are planning on eating.

I believe these are red currants too. Jostas are black and don't grow like grapes, and they are lil bit larger then what you are showing us. They are in the same family so are similar, but leaves are different too. I have all those berries in our garden because kids love them so I'm familiar with differences.

Hi, lovely plant choices. In terms of your Salix trees, they would be much happier in the ground as they are VERY thirsty. They may be okay in the pots for this season, but you’ll find that they will struggle next year and begin to show signs of deterioration. If you do decide to plant in them ground, they will need to be planted away from the fence as Salix trees have a wide spread in short timescales.

You know, I’m wondering if you could get away with power washing the stones and the fencing then staining and protecting the fencing any color you want-even dark for example, and seeing what it looks like first. It seems like one of the only issues with the fencing is the sort of odd poles that are sticking up and are a different color. If you want to see some interesting fencing options you might want to check out Tara Michelle‘s video. She and her father installed this really cost effective and cool fence that was really easy to install and beautiful.

@@EmmaHill Overwintering tips: Rio dipladenias may not survive in regions where temperatures drop below 7 degrees C or 45 degrees F in winter. Bring your plants indoors in fall to overwinter them. Place your Rios close to a window that receives all-day sunlight. Make sure the temperature remains above 7 degrees C or 45 F.

You guys were fortunate that the previous owners planted the bamboo in a sunken metal container! You have accomplished so much, you must be exhausted. Its looking so good though.

Once we’d dug down and realised the planter was solid on all sides we were very relieved because we know how damaging bamboo can be, not to mention a pain in the arse to remove 🙈 It was the previous previous owners who planted it and they must have known to contain the roots 🙌🏼

They’re Jostaberries, a bit bigger than currents, or at least that’s what the 3 labels on the plant said it is before we took them off. But I was trying to explain the taste when I mentioned gooseberries, not that the plant is a gooseberry bush, so when the fruits are green (unripe) the taste is similar to that of a gooseberry 😘

Don’t paint your gym equipment. It will be fine when the rest of the room is done. It could all peel and scratch off as you use the equipment. The plant with the berries is redcurrants. Great job . Really interesting to se what you are up to.

You can get really good paint for stuff like this which is resistant to chipping and scratching. It deffo can’t stay as it is, grey and red are not the vibe 😆 The plant with the berries that look like grapes is called Jostaberries as mentioned x

I agree, no matter how much a paint states it "won't peel or chip" it still will over time with use and esp on something like plastic. Seems silly to paint gym equipment it wasn't meant to be aesthetic was meant to be functional.

The garden looks lovely. Is the patio maintaining a step down? I am not a big fan of steps, stairs due to tripping, hazard. for the weight room, mirrored walls are popular in usa to enlarge the space and to enhance workout potential. Good music system too for motivation. If there’s a glass wall to see out to patio, even better!

  • @EmmaHill

    @EmmaHill

    2 жыл бұрын

We have windows and glass doors already in the gym so can already see outside and we’ll be having mirrors as mentioned so we can check our form 💪🏼 With regards to steps it wouldn’t be possible to have zero steps in our garden because it’s not level and the gym/pool house is built into the ground which is why we have steps. To raise the level so it’s all even would be far too much work and wouldn’t be beneficial to us as we have no issues with a couple of steps. I personally like the different levels anyway, it makes more interesting areas to the garden x

@@EmmaHill I see your point. Steps can look attractive. I have seen where they somehow just level the stairs down like a slant. I’m not sure what it’s called? it’s more cost effective doing it like this than trying to raise or lower adjacent flooring. Whatever makes you happy you should do. Things are really progressing there🙌
