Renoise Redux Sampler VST! Serato Sample Killer?!

Музыка

A tutorial/review video about Renoise Redux (a sampler VST/AU plugin for Windows and MACOSX). Is it a Serato Sample killer? Yes, if you're looking to do more with a sample besides time stretching and auto chopping a loop. No, if you want a way to tell the root key to a sample (which is unfortunate) and simplicity. However, Redux has a bit more under the hood and if you want to learn it. Well allow me to show you the ropes.

I've been using Renoise for many years. I remember when they introduced this editor to the main DAW. It was a massive game changer for the user base. We were also excited that this editor was made as a standalone plugin because we really want the Renoise team and the work they do to be recognized by people unfamiliar with them. Redux was the perfect way to do that (I think) and you're proof that it is working. Awesome!

Renoise has THE BEST sampler. Been using it for 10 years and I don't know how I could live without it. The ONLY basic feature for sample manipulation that is better is the complex pro stretch/warp algorithm in Ableton. That really only applies to things like vocals anyway.

with the phrase editor you can set note offsets or slice numbers as you sequence it, there's effect triggers for reverse too, behaviour for some pattern effects varies on whether you marked slices or not, if you didn't you can just set an offset in hex up to 1/256th precision. behaviour in renoise also differs depending on whether you use phrases or not, if you use reverse or offset commands on instruments with phrases, it will take the offset within the phrase or play the pattern in reverse, if you want to reverse or offset the samples, gotta do it in the phrase or turn them off when you're doing it in the main. that way it only uses the big loop, and its effect stack been a renoise user for years, love the phrases they added after redux came out, it's basically a pattern with its own lines per beat, arbitrary pattern length and even shuffle, so you can cut up a 48 tall phrase and play it over a 64 tall pattern and get your 3/4 syncopation like its childs play, or put it on 3 lpb vs 4 lpb whilst keeping it 64 and it will resolve as triplets, and since the parttern lengths are literally arbitray to the single digits, you can do some really really crazy syncopation

Redux MAY be a Serato Sample killer, depending on what the prospective user wants/needs. If you JUST want to find, chop, key shift and time-stretch samples, which is verbatim what Serato says is the purpose of Serato Sample, then Redux may be overkill. Of course, if you just want to find, chop, key shift and time-stretch samples, more than likely the DAW you choose will come with one or more tools to do so.

  • @AveMcree

They both have the same elastic 3 algorithm so that's not even a real argument. The only real argument to be had is Serato Sample is very easy to use (especially if you're throwing pre made loops inside of it). If you're not using pre chopped loops then Serato Sample elastic algo isn't great at all. Not to mention, you can't destructively edit a sample inside of it. The only real thing Serato Sample does truly better than Redux is "key recognition". Redux doesn't have that feature but Serato Samples key recognition isn't always correct. Minor flaw but still.

I don't see this a being a Serato killer as far as chops go. For some very odd reason, Redux doesn't seem to offer start and end markers for the chops which is a standard in slicers. You can't edit the chops. They're greyed out. You can only move the marker position in the main sample, but not the slices. I can't believe this hasn't been a request or update. I think Redux is great as a general sample player, but not so good for your chop game, unless I missed something?

I do know about adding loop points in Redux. Here's a video by the company. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q5yct7twdq6wlNY.html If you know something beyond what they state, please share how it's done.

@@jaemarrs5189 If you making simple music where you can churn out ten beats a day then yeah, serato all day. If you doing complex DnB or IDM where you doing deep slicing, keygroups with multiple modulations and micro edits, nothing comes close to renoise or redux. Hip hop is fundamnetally simple and fairly easy to make so for that yes, Serato wins as all it does is slice essentially so its all you need, its a fantastic beginners tool and i use it all the time but for genres where you got to go deep, redux all day.

Complex. Complex. Complex. It's just too complicated.

Ave now you know this is straight click bait. Serato is in its own league.

Serato is great as a pitch and time stretching tool and has a clean UI but has almost no depth beyond that a sampler... Redux looks like it has a lot more depth/features and flexibility to it.

@@combofriend4461 I hear you but regardless of features, many sample engine developers are missing simplicity. Serato is FAST. I made 35 completed beats with a difficult to sample set of music. It was a breeze with Serato. All while working on my masters degree. Imagine if I spent 24 hour days in the studio. Im sorry man. The hype over these ultra complex sample engines is hard to get behind.

@@Drfresh1402 I get what you mean, and I agree- I'm not arguing it needs to be super complex. IMO it's missing a lot of even just basic features any sampler should have. They initially got people in on the beta and I was willing to pay the $100 even tho it was half baked bc they made it seem like they were gonna keep making updates to fix that stuff, but then they went raido silent and abandon the forums for years. I was salty that it seemed like abandonware- or just a way to get people to use Serato Studio

After like..what 2+ years they finally came back and put out an update for more than 16 pads and velocity sensitivity (easily should've been there in the beginning). But that's it. Imo it's still kinda half baked, e.g. they should let you set bpm/key for when it detects it wrong, and a few other things, but I agree it has a lot of advantages over some other samplerse

Redux is in its own league. Serato Sample is waaay less powerful, it doesn't have half the features
