    I would love to see someone buy up the rights to a whole bunch of older Sword & Sorcery movies from the 1980s and reboot them in a shared cinematic universe. Many of them were set in an underdeveloped generic fantasy setting, making them easily adapted and included into more fully developed worlds. 1) Conan The Barbarian: Robert E Howard's fictional Hyborian Age is very thoroughly developed, with maps, names of countries, cities, kingdoms, and a full pantheon of deities, and thus should clearly be our starting point. 2) Red Sonja: Marvel Comics' spinoff of their line of Conan comics, it shares Conan's level of development. 3) The Beastmaster: The most successful of the Conan Ripoffs, this one spawned two sequels and a TV series. The world is underdeveloped, but can easily be made a part of Conan's Hyborian Age (just change Maax from High Priest of Ar to High Priest of Set, and place the kingdom of Aruk in a country on the Hyborian map). 4) Deathstalker: Roger Coreman's attempt to cash in on Conan's success. Again, easily made a part of a shared Hyborian Cinematic Universe by simply name dropping some locations on the Hyborian map. 5) Ator The Fighting Eagle: This one is even poorer quality than Deathstalker, but if it has a bigger budget and better actors a remake could be very good. And again, it's easily altered to be made to take place in a Hyborian Cinematic Universe. 6) The Barbarians: An action/comedy starring The Barbarian Brothers (identical twin body builders turned actors). This movie can easily be set in a Hyborian Cinematic Universe and be very good if it has its sillier comedic moments removed. 7) Hawk The Slayer: I actually know very little about this movie, but from what little I do know it can easily be altered to fit a Hyboriam Cinematic Universe. 8) The Scorpion King: Honestly this movie is practically already set in the Hyborian Age. They just have to change the Time of The Scorpion King from 5000 BC to 10,0000 BC and we're pretty much golden. Just imagine the heroes of all of these movies joining forces to defeat an evil more powerful than any that any of them have faced alone before. In a mid end credit teaser at the end of each movie, we learn that the BBEG of the movie was actually a lieutenant to the ACTUAL BBEG of the franchise . . . Toth-Amon. Then they all come together Avengers style for the big showdown.

    Seems like the logical way to wrap this up would be to react to Doug's review of Red Sonja. Arnie's basically cosplaying as a Conan who knows more facial expressions than 'mild anger' and 'CRUSHKILLRARGH' in that.

    About the D&D levels of the LOTR characters. I think Ben is way off, especially when taking the cinematic versions of the characters into account. Take Gandalf for example. In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey he appeared out of thin air in the middle of The Goblin King's lair in an explosive flash of bright light. That says to me that he used Teleport, if not Greater Teleport. Greater Teleport, being a 7th level Wizard Spell, requires the caster to be at least 13th level minimum. Also, in The Two Towers, Gandalf was able to dispell Saruman's Dominate Person spell which he was using to control King Theodin. While Dispell Magic is only 3rd level, you need to be at least as powerful as the caster of the spell that you're trying to dispell in order for it to work. So if Saruman was using Dominate Person, that's a 5th level Wizard Spell and would require a wizard of a minimum of 9th level to cast (which we've already established Galdalf, and most likely Saruman, is far above). Also it's entirely possible that Saruman had used the more powerful Dominate Monster, which is 9th level and requires a wizard of at least 17th level to cast, let alone dispell. And in the Ralph Bakshi animated LOTR movie, it took the orcs 7 arrows to take Boromir down. And with his fur loincloth, fur boots, and horned helmet, Boromir looked far more like a Sword & Sorcery barbarian class than the noble knight depicted in the Peter Jackson films. Considering that the arrows were buried right up to their fletchings in the animated movie, it's safe to assume that Boromir suffered roughly max damage from the seven arrows. Considering that they were shot by orcs, it's likely that they were sheaf arrows (used for war) rather than flight arrows (used for hunting). At a maximum of 8 points of damage per arrow, Boromir took about 56 points of damage to be brought to Death's Door. D&D characters typically start with max hit points at Level 1, so subtract 12 from 56 and you have 44. With an average of 6 hit points per level, Boromir would have had to level up roughly seven times to get 44 additional hit points (6 x 7 = 42, so the d12 had to have rolled above average at least once). This makes Boromir an 8th level Barbarian, assuming that his CON score wasn't higher than an 11 and he didn't have the Toughness feat. Using this methodology, Sean Bean's Boromir was a 3rd level fighter at best.

    Does anyone know why Conan The Barbarian never had an actual faithful adaptation of the original stories? Seriously, Conan has a tendency to appear as a dumb brute or a slave, things he never was in the stories, Conan is supposed to be a joke on supposedly barbarian characters like Tarzan where instead of being dumb he is an actually very well read and articulate fellow who just happens to like violence, and while his village was taken over by an empire, it was not exactly slavery as his life stayed mostly the same for all people in the village, except with more guards watching everyone and more taxes. Not exactly the slavery Arnold's Conan went through, and seriously, Conan is a guy who likes culture, he abandoned his barbarian village because of culture, and while he likes violence, the biggest reason why he fights and goes through dungeons and stuff is so that he can gather enough money to be able to live in high society and be able to read, have a nice house, go to concerts and things like that, hell when he actually manages to get that, it is canon that Conan lives 30 years without any adventure until he goes through some kind of mid-life crisis and decides to go through another adventure.

  • @trifontrifonov4297

    @trifontrifonov4297

    It was less of a mid-life crisis and more of an evil dark wizard that needed killing, but still. Mind he had adventures through out his reign as king, hunting the guy who tried to kill his unborn child with dark magic, the time when he was lost in China while on a trade mission and had to fight demons to find his way home, or the time when his children.....ooops spoilers, I mean he didn't exactly sit on that throne doing nothing. Its just that he was more mature and his main purpose to return to his Queen and his people.

    To be fair the first Conan movie alluded to Conan's education, it is clearly shown how as a slave he learned how to read and write (and he got to read philosophical treaties and poetry). I read a few of Howard's Conan short stories (especially loved the one set in a time when he is already king of Aquilonia but loses a war against alliance of several rulers with a stygian sorcerer, The Scarlet Citadel) +BadPeople1100: by 'Kull the Conqueror' you mean the movie starring Kevin Sorbo? :) It was a bit cheesy but I must say I like it hehe :).

If you do not know, it is the new anime adapting the mentioned manga that is from One, the guy behind One Punch Man, featuring an incredibly OP psychic, and despite that, the theme and feel of the series is different from OPM. But still an amazing series, seriously, since you like OPM, there should be no problem in you guys liking Mob Psycho.

    Hey guys. As a fellow D&D geek, I just wanted to chime in on the "Gandalf isn't a very high level wizard" comment. Just because we're not shown lots of flashy, high level D&D type spells doesn't mean that he isn't a high level wizard. In fact, he demonstrates more impressive magic in the movies than he did in the books. In "The Two Towers" Gandalf dispels Sarauman's enchantment over Theoden. In D&D the enchantment in question would likely have been Dominate Person or possibly Dominate Monster. Dominate Person is a 5th Level Spell, which requires the wizard to be a MINIMUM of 9th Level in order to be able to cast it. Dominate Monster, which is significantly more powerful, is a 9th Level Spell, requiring the wizard to be a MINIMUM of 17th Level in order to cast it (I wrote minimum in all caps because just because the wizard is casting those spells doesn't mean that they're at the minimum level required in order to cast them, only that they have at some point in their adventuring careers achieved said level). The chance to dispel any enchantment is at best 1d20 + 10 vs a DC = 11 + Caster Level. Thus if Sarauman decided to use the more powerful Dominate Monster spell on Theoden, and was in fact a 20th Level Wizard, then Gandalf would have to roll against a DC of 31 (which is virtually impossible, unless you rule that a Natural 20 on all such rolls is an automatic success). In any case, just because Gandalf doesn't choose to use his most awesome spells on a regular basis, doesn't mean that he doesn't in fact have them in his repatoir. It only means that he's not a showoff.
