Clutchless has finally introduced Direct Drive technology to the ICE. But what I still don't understand is why use a toothed fixed ratio multi speed gearbox when a CVT could have done away with the need for electric motor assist during the gearshifts?

We used to offer CVT boxes on the previous generation Clio but who would I be to question the engineering integrity of Renault. I'm sure they investigated a number of different solutions but decided this one is best having been developed extensively for use in F1. The CVT on the other hand was banned by the FIA in 1994.

@@smcmotorgroupI loved Reno's F1 CVT too. Must have been a Direct Drive? Wouldn't it be sweet revenge if Reno introduced mild hybrid Direct Drive CVT technology now? You know, a 5KGM torque ISG handling the stalling speeds before leaving it to the ICE-CVT. Also interesting is Reno's new Rafale with its split axle hybrid 4/4 technology. I'm hoping that this technology would trickle down to the point where a small car can be completely free of the multi speed gearbox. An electrified rear axle, say about 70hp driving the car upto 70KM/h before leaving it to a 70hp, 3 cylinder ICE powering the front axle. By sticking to a series hybrid architecture, battery size can be minimised to 2kwh.

I suspect battery electric technology will catch up and make this redundant very quickly. But also bare in mind you're talking to a mans whos prefered option involves 3 pedals and a gear stick😉

@@smcmotorgroup enthus like us undoubtedly love the manual transmission but the better halves we have to share the car with find it cumbersome 😔. Then there is the efficiency which without the electrical intervention is simply inadequate given the ever increasing fuel prices. I don't see EVs making serious inroads into mainstream automobile space anytime soon given the limitations in existing battery/fuelcell technology.

@@smcmotorgroup just learnt that Reno's new 1.2 mild hybrid power-plant uses a multimode dog clutch. Isn't this also a kind of clutch? If you really want to go clutchless then CVT is the only option. Suzuki's R06A hybrid turbo CVT drivetrain has done just that. Unfortunately its 660cc capacity is useful only in mini cars.

Renault don't use E-CVT gearboxes in their E-TECH range.
