Ren is self taught. He recently said that he doesn’t know the (musical) rules and therefore isn’t constrained by them ( paraphrased)

You spotted Ren's use of the built environment to master the sound production in the use of natural reverb. You perfectly realized it is a Three Act Shakespearian tragedy. Ren has self identified his style as Bardcore. He is promoting a 2nd renaissance of the role of the bard/wondering minstrel by merging rap, hip hop and baroque folk.

Ren said on a livestream recently that the total budget for the third video (Violet's tale) was just $500. The hospital bed was a child's bed with no legs, so they had to shoot it from just the right angle so it didn't look too off. BTW, as for your "formula" notion (fair point), only 2 of his 50-odd songs to date are like Hi Ren and the Tales trilogy ("bardcore" genre). Everything else is way different. Cheers! Oh, if you want to hear him singing more do How to be me live or Chalk Outlines live, both with Chinchilla. Both are incredible. Make sure you get the live ones. Thanks!

I mean, initially, it's 4, not 2 as the tales series are 3 songs, plus Hi Ren. And i wouldn't even class Hi Ren as Bardcore anyway. But way more songs can be classed as Bardcore. I'm not going to list them all because there's a lot. Think about his songs. It's not just the Tales and Hi Ren that are Bardcore. And again, if you class Hi Ren as Bardcore (which i do not, at all) then you have to include a hell of a lot more. Not hating. Just giving my opinion.

Bardcore is a made-up term and therefore everyone's definition will likely be different. It's not a word that Ren even uses or endorses. I am 100% correct by my definition - broadly, a person with an acoustic guitar conveying a dramatic, detailed, longform story with challenging content - and I am sure you are 100% correct by yours, too.@@SR1Records

22:07 it's not the devil's theme (though that's a cool take) - at the start of Violet's Tale he says we must rewind the hands of time and then he plays a little "rewind" sound on his guitar. This part is the opposite of the rewind, taking us back to present day.

GREAT REACTION... you guys got a new sub! FYI: Violet's Tale freezes up on the music video until the KNOCK, but the music & reaction video shot is fine, which is the important part. I think that people that follow reactions will know exactly what's going on up to that point. I'm curious what happened right before the full reveal, it looked like it clicked right then, but there's a cut at that point. Just a suggestion: usually something much lighter is recommended after the Tales, a big favorite is Ren busking with his band The Big Push, particularly the mashup "I Shot the Sheriff / Road to Zion / Hip Hop" (look for the version with the RED SUSPENDERS). Keep 'em coming, please!!

I think his writing is very impressive - the metaphors and similes are so well chosen - stacking jars like pickled bricks? what imagery! Fear like liquid nitrogen (granted, _aaalmost_ cliché but I think there's still a few uses allowed), The statue she was turned to butter (call-back to 'like a knife through butter') in a breath... just brilliant and let's not forget the intelligence of concealing the plural "babies" by having homonymous lyrics "please let my baby stay alive" so he keeps the secret till the very end.

Roaming Minstrels have always been a part of blighty's history and colour, lush that Ren gives a nod to this rich tradition of these fair isles but adds the juxtaposition of modern day brutality. The strongest message I get from this is the line "history repeats itself he paints her black and blue and dark, she never stood a chance". The fact that Screech turns out like his father Stevie one presumes (even though he never met the guy) and Jenny like her mother, a victim. We see this in every aspect of our lives, particularly when it comes to physical abuse and social settings (a big city with no consciousness or empathy). The chords going up the fret to my mind, is Ren fast forwarding through time. He goes from Violet being beaten up to forwarding the time to when she is in the hospital? I might be clutching but thanks for the reaction mate, the dogs bollocks.

Yes. It's a Trilogy. A Three Part Play. This is Modern Street Theatre called BARDCORE, ( Ren Style) where he mixes some medieval Bard Street Minstrel approaches and melodies with contemporary spoken word poetry, narration, song and patches of Rap. With a musical 'intro' and 'outro' to each. You're right; he and his Videographer carefully planned out the setting and rehearsed how and when to move and where within the flow of the performance, making deliberate use of the available acoustics. Clever and creative.

Great reaction to Ren's Bardcore trilogy - sad story about all day violence and abuse, told and played masterful in a shakespearian way... I agree, his singing is so touching, vulnerable and always in character, even as a narrater. How he uses (and planned) the different reverse of the rooms and streets is breathtaking - the one in the staircase gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it - so beautiful and sad at the same time. 🥹 Not to mention how he turned the awful battering of the pregnant Violet into music...a heartbreaking monument against domestic violence. Ren's talent is another level!

So much great music to explore with him! He's extremely versatile. I'm sure plenty have already told you everything about Ren so I won't be redundant. Side note - with Judson's classical background, I think I have a band he may really enjoy, and you too! The band is Nightwish. They are a Symphonic Metal band out of Finland with a Dutch lead vocalist (who is also a classically trained singer). They do sing in English, so no worries about any language barrier for lyrics. They have a huge catalog of music y'all can explore too! Live performances are what you want to do with Nightwish. They have very few official videos. Though, they do have some amazing lyric videos out for every track on their most recent album. They've been around since 1996, and are currently working on a new album. The song of theirs I'd like to suggest first is Ghost Love Score Live from Wacken 2013. I think y'all will really enjoy them! Thanks for sharing y'alls thoughts with us! I'm here for the musical journeys! Blessings to both of you guys from Bama!

This was great guys. It makes me so happy to see a couple of guys just start something like this from scratch. I know that if you keep at it, it will grow big. A few notes - Ren really nailed this "bardcore" type of storytelling song. And he is in the process of pitching a whole series of these to Netflix. Mic technique - these were all shot live with sound. Guitar is plugged in. He wears a lapel mic, but also has other mics hidden somewhere. Maybe a shotgun (directional) somewhere? But he has said that he's keeping the full setup a secret and not giving up his "tricks of the trade" One other thing I haven't seen anyone mention here is that he goes out of his way to support YT reactors. And has put it out there that if you end up getting a copyright strike on ANY of his videos, to make sure and dispute it and he will make sure it gets cleared so you can make a profit on them. Best wishes💚 You should do "Chalk Outlines", "How to be Me", or "I shot the Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" mash up next. The one where he's wearing the red suspenders as others have pointed out.

I would have certainly kept watching it if you had. Thank you!

There’s not a ton of foreshadowing, because they were written years apart and weren’t planned out as far as I know. So he wrote the tale of Screech without even knowing he’d write the other two Still, does some cool things with the writing. In Screech at the beginning, “she was headed back home to sleep”, and she knew this town she knew this floor…she wanted to escape” and at the end “Jenny lay still on the cold concrete, she found somewhere to sleep, she knew this town she knew this floor…I guess that she escaped” Another one, as you pointed out, in Jenny’s Tale “young Screech and poor Jenny lying one street apart” paralleling the line in Violet’s Tale “two twins aligned side by side” Other ones include Jenny inheriting, for lack of a better word, Violet’s tendency to freeze up when encountering a threat, and Screech inheriting his fathers and grandfathers abusive nature. It’s at least in a part a song about the cyclical nature of life, and how to some degree how one is dealt a fate through inheriting certain characteristics and generational trauma. As he says in Violet’s Tale, “history repeats itself” And in the spirit of that cyclicality(?) I’d like to return to the first thing I said, and mention a potential foreshadowing I thought of for the first time while writing this. In Screech’s Tale “our story it ends, right at the start” (mirroring the first line of the song, forgot to mention that one but anyways)…”our story it ends, right at the start”, sort of foreshadowing this element of fate. As in they were fated to meet this end from the very start, being born to a dying mother and placed into the foster system, destined to meet again at the end of their tales. Anyways, great reaction, low key one of my favorite reactors so far, and apologies for such a long comment

Thank you ❤❤ for another great Ren reaction! Ren has got an awesome back catalogue, and I am looking forward to you discovering it. So what do you want to see and hear next? A ballady thing w/guitar? Ren X Chinchilla - Chalk Outlines (live). Rap? Genesis. Fun stuff? Love Music. Raggae? The Big Push - I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop (red suspenders). Hard beats? Sick Boi or Animal Flow ... Goofy madness? Losing It! (FISHER Rap). Another great one-take? Murderer or Money Game! More singing? Humble. Have great fun! Ren has a premiere of the long-awaited Song & Video "Money Game, Pt. 3" on Thursday 12 October 2023. On Friday 13 October 2023 his new album Sick Boi comes out.

After all it´s just a guy with a guitar and a camera, but man did he take me on a ride. Loved the discussion. Like Jarvis Cocker I was locked in already, when the man did this old timey trumpet sound with the mouth like a jazzman of old. And the intro to Violet´s Tale (tail?) is fricken beautiful.

I listen to Ren often, but Chalk Outlines (a ballad with artist Chinchilla), Losing It (EDM by Fisher remixed by Ren), Sick Boi, Humble (feat. Eden Nash) and Power seem to play most often in my house. Followed by I Shot the Sheriff with Ren's band The Big Push (specifically the performance with Ren in red suspenders busking), Murderer (original and acoustic), The Hunger, and Money Game (Part 1 & 2...part 3 to be released Oct). 🎶

You're the first person to make the point to say his guitar and singing in the Tale of Screech at the start was like an Italian waltz. He even does the poor me Italian wail at the end of the verse "This Screech, dear boy, wheeere did he go?"

  • @sketchtherapy1218

Sometimes he uses the guitar notes as a sound effect in Violet he does rewind at the start and fast forward after Stevie beat Violet to signify a return to the point in the story at which the song starts. Not so much the devil as fast forward and rewind but he does use deminished tones for the devil side in Hi Ren so your corelation is correct.
