I was blown away by this when I first saw it in January? Like others have said, it’s not something I’d put on a playlist, but I confess… I’ve watched more people react to it than I can count! It’s a bit of a hobby now! 😂 Having said that, it’s led me to other wonderful songs, performances and even other artists. I have great expectations of this young man (and his cohorts.) ❤

You should dig into Ren's universe. The trilogy song the tale of Jenny and Screech is an absolute masterpiece for the story telling, the incredible writting talent, the performance, the incredible scenario and his guitar and singing skills.

I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn’t a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every “Hi Ren” reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. “Hi Ren” is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 11 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker from Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZread are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” "Hold On," his new release “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” and his latest release "The Illest Of Our Time," just to name a few. Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned It /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “Latch,” “Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session),” “Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren),” “Improvising Around Stevie Wonder,” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. Last but not least, Ren’s busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," “War Pigs,” “Roadhouse Blues,” "My Generation," “Paint It Black,” "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong” are awesome. On “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Praise You” (Fatboy Slim Cover), “What Kind Of Woman Is This,” all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren just released his newest song, “Illest Of Our Time,” on his birthday, March 29. His newest release, "Animal Flow," will premiere on May 04.

He has actually managed to bring people together who have been through the trenches, to comfort, support and uplift each other. The force is strong with this guy. There's nothing he cant do except maybe make a bad song 😂 Welcome to the Ren Rabbithole. Buckle up and enjoy your ride. It will be wild and unexpected 🐇🕳

Welcome to the RENaissance, a home for the lost and broken; enjoy the ride - For more Bardcore - check out the 3 part Tale of Jenny & Screech If you want to dive more into the rap side of his catalogue, I'd start with "What You Want" which is a brilliant homage to the Beasties, followed with "Genesis" followed by "Sick Boy" followed by "Illest of Our Time" (this one goes after the previous one so you have some grasp of the meaning) and the trail goes from there For more ... Rock(?) fare... Follow the breadcrumbs to The Big Push ... and dive in (I personally suggest Sweet Little Lady, Swan Song, Englishman in New York, and the cherry on top ... I Shot The Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop) Last but not least, don't be afraid to check down the alleys, Ren has built himself a circle of talented musician friends that will surprise you and make you glad you chose to look for hidden treasure (Hint: *Chinchilla, Eden Nash, Sam Tompkins, and so many more) (Also Humble w/ Eden Nash is just ... mmmmmmmm ) *Chinchilla: Take 1 part Christina, 1 part Jessie J, 1 part Rhianna, blend well and pour over your own unique style, served ice cold by the baddest bitch in town (See Fingers (Live), Little Girl Gone (the official video is just _FUN_)

@@progperljungman8218 Well the vast majority of it is spoken word in a rhythmic rhyming style without sung melody. In my books that's pretty much what rap is. The backing is played solo nylon string guitar, so I don't know if that creates another genre. As I say, I'm not an expert on this, but to my ears this rapping rather than singing. And I like it.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. Ren has exceeded his initial goal. However, his goal was very conservative and did not reflect the added costs of unforeseen surgical procedures, and treatment for additional health issues such as MCAD. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity

Justin, another great reaction and analysis as usual. All I can say is that Ren is my new favorite artist and possibly the greatest artist I've ever seen. He has a lot of music that you'd enjoy reacting to, both on his channel, and with his band that he played with called 'The Big Push'. Some covers they've done are War Pigs, I Shot the Sheriff, My Generation, and Paint it Black, and quite a few more, and they're all great, as is his music on his channel. I've yet to listen to anything by him that wasn't great. Just wanted to point out a couple things in the video, and hope you listen to it some more. Did you see the cool light effects above him, that created what looks like a spaceship and an ankh? Also, did you notice the 2 shadows, the darker shadow on his right and the lighter shadow on his left, along with the shape of the cross on the wall on his right? Also, the lights only flicker when Dark Ren is playing, and the tone of the music changes as well, but when Ren stands up and starts playing and singing, the lights start to flicker and eventually flicker a lot, which I believe is showing Ren 'dancing with his demons' instead of fighting them. I have 2 favorite lines. The one you mentioned and this one, 'truth in a blender', which I've heard a few different interpretations of what that could mean. I also loved how he didn't resolve the last chord at the end, showing that the pendulum swings between the light and the dark eternally, that he didn't win, and it didn't end, but that it continues on and on. Ren describes his music as BARDCORE, and that's truly what he is. Ren is a Bard, a multi-instrumentalist, multi-talented artist on a level I haven't seen, and his music now, thanks to 'Hi Ren' is touching millions of lives. I think he's the artist that the world needed. My next recommendation of his would be his 3 part tale of Jenny & Screech. There are 3 separate videos, but he also put them all into 1 video, and that's the video I recommend you watch next. Here's a comment from that video: "This feels like a modern Shakespearean tragedy. Ren is out here giving us new literary classics." Enjoy 🙂

Honestly, that noose was pretty tight around my neck after a series of some really tragic events in my life.. being out of my house for more than a year after a bad fire and having to go home to a place that is still no where near finished alone.. losing my job as a nurse after 23 years and some really difficult physical and mental health issues as well as several deaths within the past few years.. Hearing Ren was literally life changing for me.. I equate him to Bowie as I feel he is a treasure of a very different entity.. I haven’t heard a bad song from him or any of his collabs or his band The Big Push or earlier band Trick The Fox.. he just embodies someone who knows how to entertain you, help you get through life experiences and literally change your existence.. I believe he was always talented but, the things he has endured has changed him and made him become so self aware and aware of humanity in a different way..😊please follow him.. tomorrow his new release Animal Flow Debuts it promises to be something different as everything he does is.. if you get a chance let your next reaction be to Ren Trilogy The Tale of Jenny, Screech and Violet it’s just amazing.. But the video has likely now been seen ten times more than that because of reactors like you. Not only is the music/performance phenomenal, but the fact that he as an independent artist is seeing the kind of massive exposure as he is because of the internet is a cultural phenomena in the moment. Amazing. Make. Time. Blessings.

  • @sicko_the_ew

An intensely compressed one act play; but the way he achieves that level of compression is through music. If you rely just on words, and such music as there is in words, you need maybe half an hour to carry off an expressive enough one act play to count for something. (What it means matters, but not as much as it does in a sermon - which has quietly become the most popular form of literature all over again, for the first time since Queen Victoria's times - and simply how it's expressed matters more. You don't have to go home saying hallelujah afterwards. All you need is perhaps something like feeling like you've seen something of what might be found on the dark insides of another human being.) So how come music enables such compression (of the half hour into under ten minutes)? I suppose because we know how to feel what it says? So someone who could stop the strings buzzing if he wanted is telling us something relying on music when he does that. And hi.

I would love to be inside Ren's brain, I feel a commonality with him that sometimes scares me but mostly excites and thrills me. I keep seeing the genius of Ren. Everything Ren does is either fun, sad, outrageous, crazy, deep with meaning, surprising or educational. But you are perfectly right when you say they have a long way to go to reach the quality Ren brings. Ren has also extended his talent in multiple directions. I don't know of any artist in any era who has the breadth of genres Ren covers with apparent ease. I have been devoted to music since the 60s. When I was a teen in London I used to see bands and singers perform in tiny clubs in Notting Hill. There were various genres but we called it Underground Music. My take is there are three characters in the dialogue. Chaotic/self-hating Ren; Struggling/human Ren; Hope/faith within Ren. I'm not sure that the faith is religious, but he is wearing a earring with a cross in most of his videos, and there are a lot of biblical references in the lyrics. Just observing the lyrics - I'm not proselytizing (atheist, here).

Well Justin, your channel is truly unique, for the critics who love to criticize the music you react to have also criticized this phenomenal performance by Ren, as well as you for reacting to it. I really do enjoy watching critics criticize everything, no matter how brilliant it is. The fact that some people can't see what a brilliant artist Ren is shouldn't surprise me though, but it does. Ren is the most unique artist I've ever heard, yet still they criticize. They're freaking hilarious. I think it's just not in their DNA to compliment and give praise to anything. I'll never understand it, but I guess it adds a very unique element to life... so it would seem.

I wouldn't stand a chance at that point. So you see, it's in everyone's best interest that the shoes stay on, least we hand over the blue crystal balls to the space ninjas. We must not allow this to happen because the moment they have the balls in their hands they will take the balls straight to their overload, the feared Queen Mr. Karen Weakbladder, at which point she-he-sheeeesh will use them to give the entire universe space crabs, and trust me you don't want space crabs.

A big hug for you my friend!!....No one better than you, to make a reaction video and analyze this incredible singer who is leaving all the experts, literally with their jaws on the floor (Do you remember Jim Carrey's movie "The Mask"? well, just like that)...In 2017, a 22-year-old singer from Kazakhstan, named Dimash Kudaibergen, was invited to participate in the famous Chinese program for professional singers called "The Singer"... In his first appearance, Dimash covered one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse"...Since then all this madness began on the internet, KZread and social networks worldwide and he is already considered the best singer on the entire planet... It is almost impossible to see a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges of 8 octaves, that is, the 88 keys of a digital piano, which allows him to reach all registers, both masculine and feminine, that is, he can sing as Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Contratenor, Contralto, Mezzosoprano and Soprano...You can see in KZread to all kinds of experts (Vocal coaches, analysts, singing teachers, singers, youtubers, reactors, etc.), who have dedicated themselves to watching his videos and verifying for themselves that what is said about him is completely true...In addition to all this, Dimash is capable of singing in more than 12 languages...In all his concerts worldwide, tickets are sold in just seconds, via the internet, due to the immense popularity he has worldwide... Anyway, I think you haven't met this impressive singer yet, so here is the link to the first song that Dimash performed in China in that year 2017, the song S.O.S., and if it doesn't bother you, I would like you to mention me as the person who recommended it to you...Warning: You have to be prepared for thousands of views, comments and new subscribers...The video It is more recent, so it does not have the millions of views that the first ones, but it is more complete, including an intro, subtitles in several languages and better audio and sound quality...kzread.info/dash/bejne/lHiMlaihndy0kcY.html

You miss the point. The guitar was played deliberately discordantly, with nylon strings, to reflect the feelings of his inner self(s). A steel string guitar wouldn't have enabled him to play the 3 different dissonances in the song (the bad side, the good but cowed self, and the hopeful self at the end). To me the choice of strings and guitar to match the story telling was a masterstroke. You will find that Ren produces all of his own music so these choices are deliberately made as in all of his songs.
