Removing Surface Rust from Top of Square Body Chevy Truck

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this episode I remove the rust from the top of the truck using the Harbor Freight Surface Conditioning Tool. luckily the top was not in as bad of shape as the hood and the tool did a pretty good job at taking it all off.

I have an 84 shortbox I've had for about 20 yrs now. It's been used primarily for a trash hauler or lumber hauler for doing projects. She a 292 three on the tree and runs like a sewing machine. I think it deserves this treatment also. I think I've decided to give it a new look this summer. It deserves a little attention I think. Keep up the good work you will get there.

I had an 81 or so GMC Truck with the Inline six when I was in Germany. Used it to tow my Race Car with and even shipped it back to Florida when I came home. Those engines are real workhorses. The only problem I ever had was with the 3 on the Tree you had to shift from First, almost all the way to Reverse then back down and to second gear or the linkage would jam. No speed shifting with that truck. Thanks for commenting and please share your truck with us.

Yes, it is cold. Some use diluted vinegar for the pits and others use something like Naval Jelly. I really don't know what works. The idea is to kill the rust before primer. You certainly did improve it.

Maybe put some rust converter on that hood to prevent rusting again down the road ? Looking good . 👍JR

i know this is old....but, swrc pete showed on one of his vids that you can use water&vinigar to remove any rust on a top of a car. i mean down to the pores...it leaves a black surface where the rust was converted. its n older video from like 5 years ago... baumgartner.....sehr schöner name.

Yes, I did try Vinegar on the Gas spout of the truck and it did help but not as well as old fashioned sand paper. Perhaps I didn't use a string enough vinegar. I did find the video you suggested and I appreciate the advice. Danke für meinen Nachnamen. Ich habe tatsächlich etwa 15 Jahre in Deutschland gelebt. Ich war im Raum Frankfurt. @@GreaseMonkey1958 Use Vinegar at full strength, do not dilute, look for and use the highest percentage 7 or 10%. The problem is the surface needs to stay wet, for best results you usually need at least two days to kill the rust. Vinegar works best as a soak, too late for this project but another you could try spraying a rusted area wet with the vinegar, cover with plastic and re-apply to keep wet.

You need a torpedo heater in your garage. Warm it up shut it off, then paint. Then turn it back on after you air it out some. This is how I get small paint jobs done in the winter.

Deanthony, The tool I used on the top and the hood was the Harbor Freight Bauer ER 9 Amp Surface Conditioning Tool. That was all I used in this video. The hood however required a little more attention. I do recommend this tool especially if you are prepping flat panels for paint or welding. Thanks for the comment. John

I came to youtube to see what kind of protection people use when sanding dust and this guy's just raw dogging it lol. Luckily in the comments some people mentioned a respirator or dust mask. I have a full face respirator for working with this super toxic glue I got, but didn't want to wear it and look like an idiot or something if it was super overkill. Also I have neck problems and any added weight to my head makes it worse.
