Removing Rust From Old Tools

i know this is basic knowledge. but i felt like cleaning them and showing the difference of before and after. i plan to soon try removing rust via electrolysis.

    I'm a machinist and have been for 30 years. I used to clean off a lot of rust from tools and hardware using a brush wheel. If you are going to do this USE A RESPIRATOR! I got very sick breathing in the dust and I worked in a very well ventilated shop. My lungs were permanently damaged from the dust. Also, those wires can come loose and fly in your face. I hope you used safety glasses. I can't tell you how many times I had to run to the first aid kit and grab tweezers and pull wires out of my co-worker's faces. OK so much for my safety rant.

    John Smith I should have been more specific in my post. I got cancer from the grinding dust and it took a couple of years of chemo and radiation treatment to get in remission. So, YES you should us a respirator. While the little paper ones may prevent a lot of dust from getting in your lungs, they are not full proof. A respirator with filters specifically rated to protect you from grinding dust is recommended.

    Carlos De La Cruz T I would go to the website of a respirator company, there are several, and search their products. To find out the names of such companies, go to a major supplier, most sell several brands. MSC, McMaster Carr, Granger and others all have websites. Or Google "PPE industrial" and you will find many vendors selling respirators. Some of their websites have the information you need. The manufacturers of such equipment usually have the best information and will often send you a flier to look over. By the time you get done you will know more than you wanted to. The paper masks you can get from Walmart are suitable if you are only doing a few. but if you expect to do this for hours constantly, you will want a respirator with replaceable cartridges. You will spend about $40-$60 for the respirator and maybe $10 for a pair of cartridges. The respirator will have rubber seals for your face to help prevent any dust getting into your lungs.

    You can dip these same tools into a clear plastic bin filled with either apple cider vinegar or white vinegar and leave the bin outside in the hot such for a day or so longer. In fact, a couple of scoops of dried molasses (found at most farm and feed stores) put into a bin of warm water will do the same and not make the chemical mess as electrolysis will do. You can then pour the resulting ooze out into a flower bed (not vegetable garden) and still consider it being green. The grinder can snap back or kick back on you when you least expect it and the wheel does not get at all surface areas you want to clean. Lots of debris to get into your eyes or even damage your lungs.If using the vinegar or dried molasses stripping agents suggested above, just remember that flash rusting may be an issue. Generally, parts cleaned with apple cider vinegar will last a bit longer without the flash rusting happening. If your going to do electrolysis, then purchase a small kiddie pool to do your crazy scientist experiments in, as it will give you lots of room to add in more tools when cleaning. The reason I like clear plastic bins when using dried molasses or apple cider vinegar, is that I can easily check on the parts each day to see how the bath is working out. Believe me, siting the bin into the hot sun will help the process along.Good luck on it.

    much better if you soak them in vinegar, just plain old white vinegar for 24 hours, mayb turn them half way through. the result will be almost as good as electrolysis, i did it to this old axe i dug out of the garden and it came out so good you could see the difference in color from where they hardened it.

    For tools that I clean up, but won't paint, I spray them with Boeshield T-9 spray, it really helps to keep rust off, especially since I get a lot of humidity in my garage. You can use their Rust Free to remove rust where you can't reach with a wire wheel or brush, and for the small pitting that the brushes can't get too. It's not cheap, but it doesn't take much to do the job. A can generally lasts me about a year. If you use the Rust Free, you have to make sure to clean it really well after using it.

    Bench grinder buyers tip: Pay more for a high quality motor, skinnier than your wheel diameters. A thin motor allows parallel work. The cheap, fat ones make all work cockeyed and off center. Been there, done that, paid the stupid tax.

    it wasn't anything new to me but it was still enjoyable to see someone else admit to forgetting a tool or two outside and then having to clean them up. One thing I learned in a blacksmithing class was to get grungy pliers hot, but not red hot then work them under water and it will clean them right out. Just dry them and use what around here is called blacksmith goop, basically equal parts of bees wax and linseed oil, to preserve them.

    unfortunatly it doesnt matter if i leave them out in the mud or in my shed, its so humid during the summer everything rusts. i envy places like nevada where cars can sit for 60 years in the desert without rusting too much. but thats a good idea for the beeswax mix. i was in a local blacksmithing club for several years but unfortunatly everyone was only interested in making flowers and coat hangers. i'm more interested in hand forged tools and building parts of machines.

    I find that if you put bearing grease on the threads of the adjusting screws or any two steel or iron parts that rub together, they move much more smoothly and helps keep them from rusting. Also, sometimes, it's best to leave the rust where it is. It often acts as a protective layer. If you remove it, more rust may form and then you remove that and continue, you are reducing your tool/hardware down and keep it up and eventually it will disappear altogether.

    Great choice in music. I did not know to do this so thanks. My tools are moistly inside or in the garage. They are all off the ground. They do show signs of rust on my older garage kept ones like your used often wrench. With that said you are a very dangerous dude lol. I hope you never get hurt. I see someone complaining about not bolted down, yeah that would be important if it was not a brush I feel personally. I am more concerned about Gloves, then eye protection, than a dust mask to avoid inhaling any rust dust. Gloves most important when getting that close to the spinning metal wire. Thanks again!

    Acid bath. Use something like Limeaway. Or if you're brave and attend to the process you can get rid of rust fast with swimming pool acid. You just have to be sure to remove the piece as soon as the rust is gone or the acid will continuing working on the metal until it's completely dissolved. The secret to using acid is to rinse then dip the piece into basic neutralizing solution. Ammonia works well. Then treat the metal with a moisture displacing liquid like WD40 or Armorall and dry thoroughly in the sun. The wire brush is likely to expose unoxidized metal, leaving the piece open to even more oxidation. If you time it right, the acid will take only the rust first.

    Not boring at all! I just happen to be de-rusting several old and recent tools of mine. An adjustable spanner that I am working on was really rusty. Soaking it in WD-40 for a week and brushing I have got the jaw loose, but the screw is still frozen and will not turn. There is another adjustable spanner I have which is identical to the one that you said did not need brushing. It was probably made by the same company. It's problem was not rust. The previous owner used it as a hammer, deforming several threads of the screw. I removed the screw and used a file to carefully reshape the bent threads. I put it back together and now it works fine. Thanks for sharing.

    Rinoa Super-Genius If your room is being invaded by slugs, then there is probably more humidity than you think. The laquer idea sounds like a good suggestion. Maybe stack the tools on something that provides cathodic protection? There is the water displacement formula 40: WD-40. Oh go all out and set up an electroplating operation after the cleaning. That tends to generate a lot of toxic materials.

    No it is not a boring video, but do look after yourself and use gloves while using rotating wire wheels. I can also appreciate your depth of emotions towards old tools as I think you got some feeling and appreciation to the good service they give us. I feel tools should be hanged in our sitting rooms instead of silly portraits, I am sure you understand what is in my statement, as tools are to be honoured in every household,

    Two things made me cringe in this video, one was when you used the grinding wheel on that chisel, and the other was that you didn't oil the tools after cleaning them, easiest way to look after tools is to keep an old rag soaked with oil in a jar in the workshop and wipe over the tools after use, if you don't oil those tools after wire wheeling them, all you have done is expose fresh metal surfaces for corrosion to attack.

    really good use for old motor oil. just keep an oil change worth in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid in the back of the garage and treat basically any steel with it. never had a problem. makes your hands dirty but, you're using hand tools they're probably getting dirty anyways

    Lubrication and preventing rust in the first place is more important than cleaning. There was no point in cleaning the file. The rust has buggered the teeth making it as good as useless.

  • @nunyabiznez6381

    @nunyabiznez6381

    YeCannyDaeThat I am an OSHA certified safety auditor. Gloves in close proximity to a fast moving rotary tool is unsafe. Doing what this person is doing on a brush wheel the hazards to the hands are 1) getting them dirty 2) getting caught in the wheel 3) having fingers twisting around and breaking or spraining fingers or the hand 4) having the wires come loose and puncturing the fingers or hand. Gloves will only prevent 1) and could snag the wheel and cause 2) and 3). Broken fingers trumps dirty hands. So, no gloves.

  • @AlanLiefting

    nunya biznez getting your hands dirty is not a hazard.

  • @nunyabiznez6381

    @nunyabiznez6381

    9 жыл бұрын

    Alan Liefting That is not true. OSHA lists it as a safety hazard. This is because there are substances frequently found in manufacturing and repair shops that are contact hazards and are toxic to the dermis. If you are using a brush wheel to clean lead paint off an antique cast iron hinge (as an example) the lead paint is considered a dermal hazard by OSHA. Of course one can wash one's hands and the hazard is minimal but it IS a hazard. If you are using certain solvents in conjunction with a brush wheel those solvents can be a dermal hazard. But as I said, a broken finger is a worse hazard so OSHA does NOT recommend gloves combined with rotary tools for the reasons I stated a month ago.

  • @AlanLiefting

    nunya biznez point taken but I was thinking about benign things such as oil, grease, non-leaded paints, dust, etc.

  • @nunyabiznez6381

    @nunyabiznez6381

    Alan Liefting Of course you were and that is the way most people think. But OSHA must think in terms of what is the worst possible scenario. When doing a safety audit you need to be aware of every possible thing that can go wrong, not assume everything will be OK. Also, a lot of people forget that people eat with their hands. To get your hands clean enough to reasonably prevent viral and bacterial contamination one must wash one's hands for at least two minutes but most people only wash their hands for 20 seconds. Viral and bacterial contamination is only part of the story. Oil, grease and non leaded paints are still not something you want to consume and a casual washing of hands does not remove all that. If you handle oils or greases and then wash your hands before lunch, after washing your hands, smell them. If you still smell oil or grease, that means you didn't wash it all off and you are going to eat some of that for lunch. I operated wire wheels as part of refurbishing old machinery. For safety reasons I did it sans gloves but then put gloves on to eat so I wasn't eating paint and oils and grease. Mostly awareness is the key when it comes to safety.

    +Gord Baker you obviously never worked with a grinder then, you should never use gloves because the clotch could catch, meanwhile the wire wheel doesnt hurt your hand neary as much. if you wear gloves, you risk breaking a bone or worse.

    its actually more dangerous to wear gloves around a wire wheel. i skim my hand on the wire wheel a lot and it doesnt hurt you. but if you have gloves on you can't feel things as well and the gloves could even get caught on something.
