What is going on everyone? So today's video is a different one for sure. Two of my Lake Malawi African Cichlids had these strange growth (tumor) (tumour) on its tail. The fish in question are the dimidiochromis compressiceps aka the Malawi Eye Biter. So we need to work on removing these growths (tumors) (tumours) from the two fish. We are going to need some items to do this safely. 2 plastic containers that will fit the fish, clove oil, air pump, air line, air stone, razor blades, syringe, hydrogen peroxide, paper towels, cup, bath towel and medical grade gloves. This is what I used.
So what you need to do is allow the fish to sit in a water bath with a few drops of clove oil for a min or so (until the are limp, NOT A LONG TIME or they may become euthanized) The reason you do this is to anesthetize them (anesthesia) so they go to sleep for the procedure. You want to be as quick as you can and check the fish to make sure its mouth and gills are moving. You want to get them back into a container of fresh tank water asap while allowed air from a air stone to run under the gilled to force that air there as you will see in the video. I cant stress enough, dont have them in the clove oil solution long or they can die.
I hope that this video was helpful. We do this to help the fish. Removing the growth is important to the health of the fish. I love to read and respond to your comments, please comment, like and share. Interesting. I have an oranda goldfish with a similar growth on the sailfin. I sterilized a very sharp scissors, placed the fish in a smaller container and within 10 seconds I cut out the infected part, placed hydrogen peroxide to the area I just cut, added some salt and placed it back in the pond. It bled for some seconds and was fine by the end of the day eating as per usual. Months later the growth is back. So no more operation going forward as other than that it is fine.

Wow, those growths don't look good...you should do a full course of malachite green anti fungal treatment to make sure no other fish get affected. Paul, do this procedure again for sure on both fish in a few weeks to make sure you get anything left off the tails... maybe continue to treat the tank they are recovering in with antibiotics, etc. Great video!!

You definitely need to watch more videos and get more instructions on sedating your fish! I hope you are treating that tank with antifungal medication. You know, neither of those fish were out especially the second one enough where if you were doing any cutting other than the fins they would've felt serious pain! When doing small surgeries on funguses especially on fins it's much easier and cleaner to use a small surgical scissors or cuticle scissors. This way you're not spreading all the cells across the parts of their fins and bodies that aren't infected at the time of surgery because there is a much higher risk of getting other areas infected when you're using a blade. Also when using the blade the odds of removing slime coat increase dramatically. I suspect you're going to get this on all your fish to some degree because these funguses are highly contagious. I was just wondering if you tried to use antifungal medication before attempting surgery? When judging to see whether your fish are under enough for the surgery just use a two fingered pinch just above were the tail fin begins. You don't have to pinch hard there just little guys.

@@inventoryking I figured you tried something because your fish are in very good shape! I'm very interested to know how they react. I was also wondering if you looked at this under a microscope. Many times it's the only way to know what you're dealing with and a lot of people don't have this tool. I kept crisper 15 years before I got my first microscope and it made a world of difference. Take care and I really hope everything works out because those are really nice fish. Any fish is worth saving especially when they are like yours and it is obvious they are well taken care of and their owner has obviously spent a lot of money on them. You know some people think that fish don't have the mental capacity to have emotions but they are obviously like other animals that people do relate to having emotions and feelings. Especially the larger species you can tell that they would love to get out of their tank and come react with you on a physical level. Some of my fish get so excited when I enter the room and it's not only because they think they're going to get fed. Anyway I hope everything works out for you.
