Removing 4MM Broken Bolts

Ғылым және технология

This is a hollow bore shaft that is drilled and tapped on the ends and one end had all 6 bolts broken off in it. I was tasked to remove those 6 bolts. Follow along as I show you the steps I took for this one.
I apologize for what seems to be an out of focus video. I had the camera a couple inches too close to the work, trying to capture the bolt extractions. I also need some better lighting near that mill.
Don't foget I now have a store front for Abom79 and Shop Life t-shirts, always available all the time.

Best videos you make are these where parts have a broken bolt or stripped out hole. I've learned to stop using the tapered "easy out'" and go to the left handed or reverse drill bit method. I can't tell you how many easy outs I've seen broken off, Or pilot holes drilled off center and into the threads. By just STOPPING and using the correct tools or letting someone that has the correct tools and skill set can save you THOUSANDS.

Don't know how well it would work at this scale, but for tiny stuff (1-2mm) i have found dumping the thing in an ultrasonic bath can be good. just vibrates the stuck thing out. obviously for ferrous materials you'd want to put it in a jar of solvent and put that in the ultrasonic bath so it didn't turn into a rustball

It's been a while since I came over and looked at your channel, but true to form you're still doing your usual great wok. People who aren't machinists don't get how easy taking out a broken bolt is with the right techniques and equipment. I'm out of the machine shop now and doing "part swap" maintenance. The things I see people doing trying to get simple stuff like this fixed just drive me nuts. Now I'm by no means saying that this little job can't go bad even with the right weapons and battle plan, it can, but man, ones chances of success go up when one approaches it properly.

"The things I see people doing trying to get simple stuff like this fixed".. Most people don't have a fully equipped shop with mills and any tool one might need. It's not simple if you don't have, can't justify or can't afford all the right tools. ;)

A bit like having a bad tooth removed, enjoyed that. For people with only a pillar drill, you can use it in lowest speed and reverse belt by putting a twist in it, to get it to run backwards, for left handed bits. Only a bodge type job I know, but sometimes you have to think yourself out of a corner.

I've periodically have to remove broken 2mm screws, but they are usually loose and in a through hole. Problem is I don't have a machine shop and have to drill them by hand. Punching the center is the hardest part. Then I use a Dremel with a super short bit to make a through hole. Finally, a tapered needle probe pushed in by hand is enough to get the screws out.
