Removing 4MM Broken Bolts
Ғылым және технология
This is a hollow bore shaft that is drilled and tapped on the ends and one end had all 6 bolts broken off in it. I was tasked to remove those 6 bolts. Follow along as I show you the steps I took for this one.
I apologize for what seems to be an out of focus video. I had the camera a couple inches too close to the work, trying to capture the bolt extractions. I also need some better lighting near that mill.
Don't foget I now have a store front for Abom79 and Shop Life t-shirts, always available all the time.

As an engineer, this is such a satisfying watch, love it!
I could watch you watch paint drying and you would still make it interesting. Thumbs up man!
You're spoiling us today Adam!

I'm already full!
Best videos you make are these where parts have a broken bolt or stripped out hole. I've learned to stop using the tapered "easy out'" and go to the left handed or reverse drill bit method. I can't tell you how many easy outs I've seen broken off, Or pilot holes drilled off center and into the threads. By just STOPPING and using the correct tools or letting someone that has the correct tools and skill set can save you THOUSANDS.
not 1 but 6 out. awesome job, i have been pulling out left hand bits for over 20 years, love the look on peoples faces before and after, especially after using them.

CobraBuilder I wish I would have collected all of the bolts I have removed.
You hit pay dirt right off the bat! But, then I was getting nervous about whether the other five would bow to your greatness! They knew they had no chance and crawled from their holes. Thanks, sir.
if you wikipedia broken bolt extractor a picture of Abom79 comes up. man just seeing those broken bolts makes me wince. all about the prep and patience.
So the protocol: Heat, penetrating oil, end mill, center drill, left-hand bit...... Fortuitous that you went through this....!!! Thanks!!

emil dekoven That's what I did on this one, heat seems to help when you can use it.
That sure can be a tricky job Adam , You made it look easy man ! Thumbs up..
You truly are a master of your craft
Great job and nice macro shot, Abom.
Man your good at those broken bolts Adam.
A Abom 79 Wed suprise. Thanks Adam.
Don't you just love it when they spin right out! Everyone has their little tricks and methods. That could have ended entirely differently. Sometimes things just work out.
You did a great job centering on those bolt holes just by eye. Nice work.
You’re a genius. Found multiple videos before yours trying all kinds of weird techniques and the whole time I thinking to flatten it first. Makes sense. And thanks for the heat and penetrating fluid tip first.

Nice job Adam. Got them out, that was needed.....
Thanks Adam. I can tell you're a good man using your skill to help people with a deal fair to both parties. Thanks.
Sure made this task look simple. The blessing of left hand tooling. That what I always used at the dealership .
Very nice Adam. Those left handers work really well.
Bruce from Australia would be proud of you, you learned well !!!
Awesome video, Adam. I've learned so many practical troubleshooting tips from your videos - I know they'll come in handy in the future.
Hi Adam. Hope you have some great weeks. Wish you a good weekend. Always something new to learn from you. Thanks. Best wishes from Norway
Had a set of left handers thrown in on a drill bit deal last year, whole package cost £95.00. Left handers saved me that already and only used them twice.
I LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER. GOOD WORK.
I usually remove broken bolts by welding on them another bolt or nut, but M5 and less is a pain on the ass. Thanks for sharing that idea mate!!!
Great video and a new method for me to remove small bolts and screws from the Industrial sewing machines that I work on as a mechanic. Up to now I have been cutting a slot into the top surface with a Dremel cutting bit and unscrewing it with a slot screwdriver. It doesn’t always work.
Adam, you make the tuff jobs easy! Tooling, Technique, Talent! I pick something up every video! Thanks...

Those left hand drills are a god send.
I love left hand drill bits 90% of the time they get the stud out and make it look easy.
GREAT job Adam and it is always such a good feeling to win those battles and you did it x6. You make it look sooooooo easy which is a testament to your skill, extensive experience and the right tools. Thanks for allowing us to look over your shoulder and learn.

He is not lucky. He is skilled.
If I had been doing that, I would have gotten 5 out and the last one wouldn't have come out even if it hair lipped the Pope. Great job Adam! Keep us updated on your brother.
I'm never that lucky. Every time I get a job like this, it's usually some hardened cap scew or something. I have a lot of respect for you and your skill.
This is exactly why anti-seize and stainless fasteners should go hand in hand.
I like the trick of predrilling a hole, with a smaller right handed bit. Then letting the left handed bit grab on better. Thanks.
Delicate work!! Brilliant! Great result Adam :)
Great job, Adam, unusual to see you working on such small stuff. Very interesting to watch. Thanks. Mart.
I'm jealous, my last 'getter out' job turned into 3 days.... Great work as ever Adam, thanks for sharing. Ade.
Nice work Adam. This is a very useful knowledge.
Fantastic, as always.
great work as always adam , thanks for sharing .
nice video. as usual! I'm from Brazil and appreciate your videos a lot. You have an accent good to listen and easy to understand.

I can see the price of left handed drill bits on ebay going up today
I was shown the LH drill trick in the last couple of years. can't believe I got this far along in the career with out know it. Nice one Adam

Jeffry Blackmon That iPhone is handy for those close ups sometimes.
love the super close up shot on the 5th bolt. :)
Another nice tip on removing threaded items!!
Great job Adam!
Love those left hand drills, I buy the Snap on cobalt ones and they seem to work well.
Don't know how well it would work at this scale, but for tiny stuff (1-2mm) i have found dumping the thing in an ultrasonic bath can be good. just vibrates the stuck thing out. obviously for ferrous materials you'd want to put it in a jar of solvent and put that in the ultrasonic bath so it didn't turn into a rustball
Great job!
Thanks for the mid`week keep us going video! As always super video. Thank You
Ah, nice, another abom sized job... Wait, what? Those hands are eeenourmous!
Don't you just love it when a plan comes together....
You're a magician.
Just catching up ... Experience shows ! Heat, penetrating oil are good start. Using a mill to make the surface FLAT for the center drill, is a key step !
It's been a while since I came over and looked at your channel, but true to form you're still doing your usual great wok. People who aren't machinists don't get how easy taking out a broken bolt is with the right techniques and equipment. I'm out of the machine shop now and doing "part swap" maintenance. The things I see people doing trying to get simple stuff like this fixed just drive me nuts. Now I'm by no means saying that this little job can't go bad even with the right weapons and battle plan, it can, but man, ones chances of success go up when one approaches it properly.

"The things I see people doing trying to get simple stuff like this fixed".. Most people don't have a fully equipped shop with mills and any tool one might need. It's not simple if you don't have, can't justify or can't afford all the right tools. ;)
When using left hand bits, I pre drill with rights like you, but before i run in the lefty, I shove a bunch of chips back into the hole to help jam it up in there. Seems to work better.
You're too modest. A sense of delicacy and feel is most certainly involved. Sometimes a bigger hammer is the right tool and other times a light delicate touch wins the day. You've got both ends of the spectrum covered for sure....

Great video! Thanks for posting it.
Christ, that was brilliant! Thank you for that!
Nice work Adam, thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Looks like you are really making it big young man, I saw you got a shout out on the latest 'This Old Tony' video. That guy (like yourself) is a 1st class Machinist and a thoroughly 'good old boy'. Kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland. Joe.

Joe McIntyre That old Tony is quite the fellow. I enjoyed working with him on that video. He's got some great content!
Nicely done Adam. I have found the using a Bosch 10.9v Impact Drill with a mini chuck (hex drive) and Reverse drill bit works well. The Drill's impact is very gentle and can grab the bolt nicely.
awesome job man.
A bit like having a bad tooth removed, enjoyed that. For people with only a pillar drill, you can use it in lowest speed and reverse belt by putting a twist in it, to get it to run backwards, for left handed bits. Only a bodge type job I know, but sometimes you have to think yourself out of a corner.
Nice job!
what a neat job!
Fine job
You are a magician!
Nice! Awesome skills and tools!
6 for 6...excellent.......I've gotten stuck with this situation a few times.....sometimes drilling through the broken stud relieves the pressure and it comes right out....like these..... I've even got a Snap-on set of left hand drills and extractors......
great work, I use m4x0.7 often, great to know how to get em out if they ever break off
nice work man . left handed drills for the win!
Hey Adam! I just recieved the Tshirt from teespring I ordered. Awesome fit and quality and sure looks nice with your channel logo on it. I am about to start a video series just as a tryout and to give something back to the community. I will make sure to wear it in those video's :)
Left handed drill bits are the best!
I would've turned that whole project into scrap lol. Great job!
An engraving tool with a high BPM works really good for smaller bolts like that, you can literally walk them right out. Unless they're too damaged or seized of course.
great video, just did a similar thing but with a snaped 3/8 bolt
You are one skilled and lucky man...
Thanks. I just broke off a 4mm stud in a circular saw that I am restoring by not paying attention (doh). Will try this method as I trust your channel.
Perty slick Adam. I've got to get some lefties so I can work on broken bolts, too! Greg
You are a lucky, lucky man!
Patience prevails again
Excellent!
I've periodically have to remove broken 2mm screws, but they are usually loose and in a through hole. Problem is I don't have a machine shop and have to drill them by hand. Punching the center is the hardest part. Then I use a Dremel with a super short bit to make a through hole. Finally, a tapered needle probe pushed in by hand is enough to get the screws out.
Good work my man! Those looked a lot more like a lost cause when you started I thought they were really going to be corroded but they were not that bad when they came out.
