Remove the Rattle from Your Hitch Carrier or Bike Rack with the MaxxHaul Anti Rattle Stabilizer

When we have a full load in the #KempBus and still need more storage, we add our B-Dawg Towing St. Bernard hitch basket carrier and our MaxxHaul 4 bike rack. But all of that gear attached to the trailer hitch causes a lot of rattling and movement. Today on Kemp Outside we show you how we haul all our gear using hitch mounted accessories and how we keep movement and rattling to a minimum with the MaxxHaul Anti Rattle Stabilizer for 1.25" to 2" hitches!
**WARNING** This is not a setup for heavy loads!!! We use the bike rack or pull a trailer, not both! We pull a 14’ aluminum rowboat behind the basket so we only use very light loads. Please be very careful to make sure you are not exceeding tolerances of any equipment.

I have to give you a great big THANK YOU from Calgary Canada, I bought a mobility scooter ramp that arrived today and had no instructions, it came with one of those clamps in it I had never saw before, I looked all over KZread and the internet and spotted your video now I am well on my way to installing the ramp on my truck All the best my friend from this old guy in Calgary Canada.

Tongue weight should be most likely reduced if you extend the weight out beyond the length of a normal hitch. You are creating a fulcrum extending out 3-4' like that.

I do! I realize I didn’t make it clear in the video but I either use the bike rack or pull a trailer, not both. also, the boat I pull is a 14’ aluminum rowboat. the boat and trailer combined weighs less than 600 lbs. I’m going to shoot another video making this more clear.

on the basket 500lbs destributed point: cut a plywood floor using the top rail of basket as a template. lay over your expanded metal floor. this takes the distribution out of the equation mostly. it removable too

That's a good tip. I mostly use it for carrying coolers so I don't have to worry about non-distributed weight.

Since I fish in saltwater environments, I don't want anything to trap salt and moisture against the metal. But that idea can certainly work to remove a rattle.

I have a 14' rowboat on a trailer I pull behind the carrier. I have a 16.5' aluminum project boat I will also put behind the carrier, but I won't put my 20' pontoon boat behind it. It is all about tongue weight and though that carrier is pretty strong, I don't want to risk it.

Do you by any chance and based on this particular set up you have on the video where you are NOT towing but rather have the carrier and bike rack hanging out from your hitch. Do you know how far back (lenghtwise from the vehicle's rear bumper) can you legally (as per the DOT) go? Is there a link or something to the literature? I ask because i am working on the same thing for my 2001 Durango and i am almost done. It looks good but it does look awfully extended way back. Does anyone know what's the actual legal number?

I have been looking for an answer to your question and can't find one. I prefer not to put my bikes behind the carrier and now mount them on the front of the van. But I will put them back there for short trips when needed. Here is my video on putting bikes on the front in case you are interested. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqCEsMaPfZqplMo.html

@@KempOutside just see your reply man. Thanks! So i have finished my hitch cargo set up and it is a bit different than what you have on this video. Out of my towing vehicle's hitch i have a dual hitch extender from harbor freight. On the top inlet of the dual i have mounted my bike rack and on the bottom inlet i have mounted a swing away elbow which in turn has a receiver and to that i have mounted a cargo basket like yours from harbor freight as well. The swing away elbow is from Amazon... a brand called fixa tools. I wish i could upload pictures to you on this reply but i don't know how to. The thing is that if i take my measuring tape and measure the distance from the end of my towing vehicle's hitch to the very end of the hitch carrier basket (which is in my case the most outward to the rear) i get 54 inches. I found and article online which is not from the Florida DOT but from somewhere else that says that stuff can only overhang 4 feet off the vehicle's rear which would mean for me that i have to find a way to trim 6 inches somewhere to my current set up. This could only be done by cutting some of the dual hitch extender and carrier basket. The other choice is to have i believe some sort of signage or something it says. That sounds like a pretty heavy bike rack. I’d be cautious, especially if you have heavy bikes. Also don’t overload the basket with a lot of weight.

It really depends on the weight of the trailer. We pull a 14' row boat behind the basket with no problems what so ever. the tongue weight is less than 25 lbs and the whole trailer weighs less than 250 lbs.

I was demonstrating how much play there is without the stabilizer. The only trailer I tow behind the basket is a rowboat trailer.
