Remove Syllables in English: Learn to Pronounce "Dictionary" "Family" "Literally" in British English
Learn how to remove syllables in British English words. This process is called 'syncope' (/ˈsɪŋ.kə.pi/) which means a consonant or weak vowel sound is removed in a word, such as in "family", "dictionary", and "literally". In this video you will learn three easy rules for when syllables are removed in British English words (do keep in mind that there are some words out there that DO NOT follow these rules, like "medicine" and "vegetable", but I haven't mentioned them here).
Bear in mind that some accents do not do this, but it's pretty common in accents from England/The UK. :)

I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

In American English we remove some of these syllables, but there are some exceptions... Words "Dictionary" and "Literally" usually stay as 4 syllables. And I think most of the "Rule N" words are kept whole.
TThank you a lot🙏🏿🙏🏿

Hi Emma! Why is "family" separated into /fæm.əl.i/? The onset for /i/ shouldn't be /l/ and /m/ the onset for /ə/? I had understood that to separate into syllables we need to start from the end of the word and then assign the onsets for the nucleuses. Up to three consonants as an onset..
Good video
Please add more sentences in your upcoming videos..... 🔥
You should have mentioned "perhaps". Great vid!!

Please advise why it is only the second schwa but not also the first schwa is deleted in the word “dictionary”? The first schwa is before n
@Pronunciationwithemma
Жыл бұрын
That can be removed too but it doesn't remove a syllable, so it CAN be like /ˈdɪk.ʃ(ə)n.(ə)r.i/ (speaking in technical terms, that n becomes a syllabic n, so it kind of takes the role of a vowel and a /n/ together - I'll talk about syllabic consonants more in the future but this happens with n and l usually :))
