Remove, Clean, and Replace Dewalt Brushless 20V String Trimmer Quick Spool Head
In this video I take the time to show you how to remove, clean, and/or replace a 20V brushless Dewalt string trimmer head. I noticed as I was trying to scour the internet for how to do this, every video and piece of content I could find was showing a different type of head. So, I took it upon myself to go and make a how to video for the quick spool head shown here.

I can't understand why such a big company can't highlight that slot.
Probably said this last year already, but this is the greatest video ever made.
This is the beauty of KZread! I had this exact problem. Could figure out how to get the head off. Watched the video and no problem! Runs like new now. Many thanks Jason!
Just noticed I have texted you before to thank you for going to the trouble of making this video.. it’s been brilliant to recap as I had to replicate your cleaning and reassemble the motor just as you did. It’s saved time and acute frustration. Cheers to you Jason
This was perfect, thank you! I have struggled with that thing and given it more than my polite opinion more than once. With your video, I finally figured out why the pop-out was not working: had accumulated grass and junk crammed under the spindle. Went to the garage right after I watched this and ten minutes later I was weedwhacking away! Thank you!
You, my friend are a lifesaver. I bought mine, two years ago. I never could figure out how to take it apart, clean it and make it work again I thank you very much.
Pro tip. Put the handle below the folding part. Then it is perfectly balanced.
Another tip. For adding line, unless there is line left in it, there is no need to take off the top. The nail is not needed either. Just line up the marks on the top and bottom to expose the hole. Run string through. Then hold the top while turning the bottom counterclockwise. That way the string stays put and doesn't wrap all around it.
I add 30 feet of line. After threading the line, hang the 2 ends above the head of the trimmer. When you spin the head to wind the line, the length of line just spins and feeds rather easily.
Thank you for this post. I used it to 'fix' my trimmer. I hated that DeWalt until I learned how to clean and load it from your video.. now I love it.
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard.
Im 13 years old and my neighbor needed help with his mower, so i fixed it and then he said something about a weedeater so i looked at it and it wasnt feeding right because the previous owner didnt know how to string it and it was all clogged with grass and a fish net, thanks to this amazing video right here i was able to get the weedeater fixed.
I was almost ready to just maylay my dewalt trimmer, but i found your video and it saved the trimmers life. Great video
These videos are why I love KZread. Thank You Sir!
No manual, and no factory advice on this stringer head. Purchased on sale at Home Depot, and this is a different head than most DCST920 Trimmers. Thanks so much for putting this out there. Maybe I can get mine to advance now.
Man thank you so much for this video. I saw that slot and ligned it up and held it with a screwdriver. What I didn't realize is that it was left handed thread. After watching this I got mine working just like new. Thanks again
You're a life saver. I was losing my mind trying to figure out how to restring my weed eater; I was beginning to believe I made a bad purchase. Thanks for the help.
Great video, wasn't sure what rotation to wind new string. A tip for extended the string while in use is to pull and release the trigger. Then while the head is still spinning, but not being driven by the motor, bump it. Gives you more control over the feed and less wear on the unit.
I spent a good hour messing with my strimmer trying to get it apart, and then another hour trying to find a video to fix what I’d done... absolute life saver!
Thanks for showing me how to get the head off my trimmer. I bought a new head and came straight to KZread to find instructions on changing it out. Your video had me finished in under 5 minutes. Thanks again!
