Remote Overlanding Trail to Kakwa falls, the highest waterfall in Alberta
We return to Kakwa Falls and discover there is two trails to reach the falls, attempted a climb to the base of the falls, enjoyed some campfires, found some awesome crownland camping spots, ate some fantastic meals and had a great overlanding trip!

Well worth the trip, allow some time though, it's a ways out...
This is so crazy, I just happened to watch this video because I have done that trail a few times and was surprised to see myself in it!! We were the group in the side by sides the the dog. Remi (our lab) is the dog in the video at the first crossing. Great video! Thanks for posting.

You guys do a great job of maintaining the trail, and facilities. Thank you! Must be awesome to ride in the winter 👍
Only been there once years ago lol bring a spare tire!

Right. I had to use my spare once on a trip there.
The age-old question it seems. I've read through the comments, but figured I'd ask here. I've been dying to get to these falls for the last few years. This week may be my chance. I'm working b/w Hinton and Grande Cache. I have a 4x4 Silverado half ton which has done the Cardinal divide with relative ease (sure was fun) twice now. This truck needs to get to the Kakwa Falls before I retire her. Could you spare a moment to chat? Happy to hear from you if you're up for it. Just planning the route out that's all. Cheers! Rogan
Looked like a fun trip😁 If you were able to make it to the bottom of the trail to the falls, if there a way underneath them to look out while the water is coming down? Great camping spots you've found! Thanks for sharing the adventure😃

Yes you can if you don’t mind the climb down to the river bottom. It is really awesome for sure! Cheers!

Very much so 👍
Ah you took the moderate way. Careful with that camp site at 158 I think on the 2 lakes road. Had to sleep in the truck this spring because there was grizzly that poking it’s head out of the trees to check up on me.

We had two grizzlies circle around our campsite the weekend before that, always stay smart around bears.
was there by horse years ago then went to kaka lake
That last part to get down to the water is pretty sketchy. I was just lucky there was people in front of me.

Once or twice 😎
As someone who has an AWD Escape, a front wheel drive Compass and a full size 4WD Silverado 1500 work truck that has never seen a dirt road (and I’m not sure my boss will let me use it off-road anyways), what are my chances of making it down the easy route (I also have no experience off-roading), coming from highway 40? Just curious.

Nevermind. I thought there was access from just north of Grande Cache off the highway. I didn’t realize the only way in was the Two Lakes road. That’s a gnarly trip lol.

I have never gone the other way so I really don't know.

There really is no other way. Two Lakes rd to the kakwa falls trail, one way in one way out.

The first time I was on the trail was with a 2002 Jeep Liberty. Although I was able to make it I kept bottoming out on rocks. After I lifted the Jeep And put big MT tires on it and a winch it made all the difference. One year the river level was so high on the river crossing that I just turned around and didn't risk it. The 4wd Silverado would be my choice. A good low range and plenty of ground clearance would be my recommendation. Skid plates also a good idea. I saw a truck with a camper on the back make it all the way.

@@user-qo2vg5fb1s I think maybe there was access from another way because it shows it on the old maps. However, there is no other way now. There is also a route in from bc. More of a quad trail though.
was just wondering if its possible with a 1/2 ton truck. gmc sierra?

Really depends on the water levels...

Water levels around grande prairie are lower than normal. Depends on how much more rain we will get.
