Remote Control Railroad Switching With A CSX Caboose! Switching Industrial Railroad Spur, CSX Action

Railroad switching using remote control belt packs and CSX bay window caboose. Unmanned train doing industrial railway switching across a busy railroad crossing. This local freight train is in Cincinnati working along the Ohio River. The caboose is used as a shoving platform for the long reverse move from Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati to the customers along the river. Crew members ride on the caboose leading the train when heading westbound. They ride in the locomotive when returning to the yard. Its interesting to watch them using the beltpacks to operate the locomotive while standing on the ground. Filmed January 14, 2021. Thanks for watching! Just an accident waiting to happen which was illustrated a little over a week later when a CSX remote unit derailed in Cincinnati near Gest St. The railroads are trying to save money by using remote control units but in the long run it cost them dearly when accidents happen.

They had those dam remotes when I worked at the steel mill. One place was in the slab yard. It had tracks everywhere and we had to drive around the yard. It was flat like one big crossing. You'd see a train moving, see the engine, and have no idea where the operator was and if he saw you or not. Scared the shit out of me. More accidents looking for a place to happen because they didn't want to pay engineer rate. After a while they'd just ride the engine on the walkway, in all weather. got to save that buck. Stupid idea and I haven't touched on when the controls would mal-function or have interference

I'm a remote control operator for BNSF. Spotting industries is not hard at all. There are two on a remote job. So sometimes there is still a guy or gal up on the engine to watch the point. If you are switching in a yard most have remote zones that you can activate and only you can use them for your movement without having to watch. We have strict rules for remote control ops. We can't just turn on the box and start pulling and shoving cars.

It looks like model railroading on a 1:1 scale. Since the onset of DCC control systems, model railroaders have become quite adept at operating locomotives by remote control, often wirelessly.

An identical caboose (except for the condition being much worse -- very rusty) has been sitting for years on a siding in Winchester, Virginia near 437 N. Cameron Street (address of a local shelter for homeless men -- the Winchester Rescue Mission), just south of the old freight station (across the street from WRM) that was until a couple years ago the home for the Winchester Model Railroad Club. 🚂

I like that CSX EMD, the dome cars, and that caboose. Together they make a very cool short train. The mountains make this video awesome as well. I would love to have that caboose! The blue, gray, and yellow are so nicely painted on it. Great job filming this video! I hope you will get more caboose cars, mountains, and snow. They really make these videos worth watching Jaw Tooth!

In the 1990s I lived in that neighborhood you see at 14:46. I lived like a block and a half from that church, and worked nights at the Speedway you see behind you at the start of the video (though it was called 'SuperAmerica' at the time. This was before they widened and streamlined US50 (between the tracks and that neighborhood). You keep wandering around my old stomping grounds. I also used to live in a neighborhood in Williamsburg 2006-2012; you filmed a train at a crossing only a block or so from where I lived. I live in Toledo now, and you'd love all the railroad activity up here. The Chrysler Jeep plant keeps the railroads busy, for sure.

Remote control is good and great and something we will see more of, next to automatic systems. But the only way I think a remote controlled train can be relay safe, is if they equip the train with cameras, both fixed cameras and cameras that can be moved manually in position (magnet) and using VR-googles or similar. First then you can get got safety control with remote control. With VR you can get 360 overview. Something we have been testing out the last couple of years on Norwegian tanks.

CP used to have a caboose for the Jones Island job but it burned up. Brakeman now suffers thru a 2+ mile push hanging on the first car in all types of weather. Thanks for showing us the flip side.

JT I will differ with you here. Remote control is not cool!!! It is dangerous and due to so many derailments from side swiping they have stopped using it in most areas on the division I worked on. I got several pictures shortly after RC switching started, at one of our bigger yards on my division with an engine laying on its side.

Wow, I didn't know they had so much trouble with it! The railroad near my house tried it for a few months and then gave up because they had problems with it but I never knew what the problems were

That’s cool, there, son! Just about every device I have winds up being used to only about a third of its full capability.

Here is some advice from the begging. Okay so for the video, 4K is better than 1080, but it takes up more storage. So be careful about it. I usually do 1080p 60. 60 at the end is the refresh rate, Which is why it's smoother. Anyway, Great video and hope you stay safe! Love from Michigan.

It would be interesting if you could show HOW the remote units work - what the caboose (in the UK we'd call it a brake van) has to do with anything, and I presume in the event of a 'lost contact' the train brakes would fail safe and stop the thing.
