Remodeling Our Pole Barn into a Kitchen - Time Lapse

A several-month remodel project in 18 minutes, where an old underutilized building is converted into a kitchen. I filmed the entire remodel process starting with unloading the building materials, and showing everything from putting up walls to building an extended roof. The builders were great about allowing me to film the entire process!
This video was created in 4K at 60fps with over 200 hours of time lapse footage totaling over 150gb, and taken with 2 GoPro cameras, so it is my largest video project so far.

It doesn't matter if you guys were doing your remodel on a budget or not. The kitchen, the design and choices you put into that huge kitchen is what you want and it's what you got. It looks great and as long as it works for what you built if for, than it was worth everything! Great video, thanks for sharing! Love time lapsed reno videos. :)

I knew the reason for the kitchen when the first thing my eyes landed on were the jar rings. Be still my heart, I would love this for doing my canning and cooking for a crowd. Beautiful and s so functional.

Awesome remodel! I'd be stocking those extra fridges with sodas and beer in no time. With those huge pots for canning/jarring, no wonder 2 stoves are needed. I'd kill to have that kind of real estate for food prep. Now all that's needed is a TV and some comfy couches to kick back and relax after a day of preserving :-)

Due to some comments I have been receiving, I wanted to mention a couple things. First, the purpose of this video is to show all the aspects of a basic remodel project from an objective point of view, even if some of the design decisions don't appeal to everyone. The kitchen/room is large because we will be storing a lot of food and doing a lot of food preservation, and because the kitchen at our house is small. Secondly, all the design choices we made such as the painted concrete flooring or using OSB/plywood for the walls and ceiling are decisions we made because they work the best for our needs.

Sharing is caring, there are always people that will have an opinion to counter whatever you do. You could cure cancer, world hunger and bring world peace and some mouth breather will have an objection to how or why you did it. F' em all and let God sort them out, do you and don't explain yourself.

I am totally jealous. What a fantastic food prep space. A place for everything, you dont have to pack away and hunt for your food prep tools. Just WOW. You could definitely rent that out to a start up caterer or someone needing a food prep space. I was sold on the amount of refrigeration.

Thanks, it was definitely built to be a space to serve many purposes and all those fridges hold quite a lot of food we store here. We probably won't be renting the space because we use it ourselves a lot, but also we live a few miles down a dirt road and relatively far from the city.

I loved the video , to watch the place magically evolve into something completely different . I also love the fact that you chaps take these things on . That you don’t watch others make your life for you , but that you make it yourselves . The satisfaction must be colossal . That’s a great kitchen . You can really get things done in there . The fellow saying a woman wouldn’t like to work in it must not know a very wide range of women . Which brings me to those folk who say mean things . I wish people didn’t feel the need need to pour cold water over everything that doesn’t suit their taste , or that they don’t see the reason for . I to actually good that we human beings

Funny how some are hung up on the style choices when I have seen so many beautiful looking kitchens made of top dollar materials that could be featured in an architecture catalog that never seem to be used. I subscribed after reading what you wrote just to let the negative people know that perhaps they need to take a better look at themselves and the way they do things. I for one liked the way it looks and the material choice was probably the best for the situation. Great job.

In the late 1940s and the early 1950s, this type of kitchen would have been called a canning kitchen. Large farms would have seperated large scale food preparation and canning/freezing to an old building. It would have contained freezers, shelving for storing canned and dry goods. I think it is great to see this type of kitchen come back in style.

Great kitchen for canning, storage and butchering. I like the idea of a bathroom, too, so the butcher or cook can clean himself.

Thanks! I have seen a lot of time lapse videos and what I tried to do differently with mine was put the camera closer to the action and move it around more often to show different parts being worked on. The builders were really nice about allowing me to setup the tripod in the middle of the room and they were careful around it, but sometimes I just put a suction cup on the inside of the window to get the shots I did.

WOW! Another excellent job! Both the filming/editing and the building!! I love the Scandinavian minimalist look. Maybe you can give us an update on the whole homestead. I’m in an area now where I have no cell or internet so I have to catchup when I travel. Blessings...

Thanks for watching and for the comments! I do plan to do a video soon about our farm, maybe like a tour video showing what has changed, especially in the new kitchen. Also we are building a new chicken coop from scratch (video in progress) so it would be cool to show everything since I haven't done that yet since we moved here aside from time lapse videos.

A good, big working harvest kitchen. Plenty of room to set up work tables, rolling racks, and other utilitarian items. I couldn't tell: Is there a drain in the floor for cleaning? And did you make accommodations for future electrical expansion for things like a blast chiller, a coolbot-type cold room, or a bank of freezers? Any plans for a back-up generator?

Thanks for watching! A harvest kitchen is a great term for this room, as I haven't thought of what to call it. The extra storage space is used for 2 metal racks, as well as a desk and couches so the room is somewhat multipurpose. We did try to plan for expansion, such as including many electrical circuits and additional 240v power lines which are just covered for now. A floor drain would be handy but the foundation was already poured so that wasn't possible. With 5 freezers, keeping them running is important. Luckily our electric company is really good and we've never had a power outage longer than a couple hours, but I think installing a transfer switch in the breaker panel would be a good idea so we wouldn't need to have extension cords running everywhere from our generator.

My only thought is that you’ve got all those fridges and freezers and cabinets and 2 stoves/ovens but just one little dishwasher. Looks like a whoooooole lot of handwashing in your future! lol But hey I’m a mom with enough kids and dishes to have to run our dishwasher 1-2 times per day so that’s what I think about 😂

Not to my taste, but functional. I think getting such a big project done is a great accomplishment and I'm glad you guys could save money with the outdoor kitchen. Nice job, it's very pretty from the outside.
