Remington should have manned up and owned the issue with model 700 triggers. The original designer acknowledged the issue and designed the correction decades ago but Remington chose to deny, deny, deny and buried their heads in the sand. Remington left their loyal customers in the cold.

Legacy costs and piss-poor quality control is why Remington went under. By the late 1990's, Remington couldn't afford to pay their contractual benefit guarantees to their union members and retirees.

Yes and "no"... I purchased a (Remington made) Marlin X-T22. Right out of the box, it had a BENT BARREL. HTF does something like that happen??? Quality control is SO BAD, it's put me off - ever - buying anything "made in the USA".

I'm in Australia, and it's now pretty well known, if it isn't JM stamped, *do NOT* buy a "Marlin" (or a new Remington). It's kinda sad, but it's harmed the reputation of "Made in USA" far more than just a firearm or two :(

I’m a New Yorker, and I’m ashamed to say that you are right. Between bad government and unions that really don’t care about their people or the company, few companies stand a chance. Someday we’ll take our state back. My theory is that it will eventually catch up in the rest of the country and no place will be free, unless the people stand up.

I worked at Remington, and I knew these guys. Yes, they were money guys but they were also big gun enthusiasts. The problem was they didn't know how to run a gun company and enthusiasm is no substitute for experience.

Ruger is just as bad every 1 i bought had to go back . The repair jobs where horrible. I always buy American I fought for this country as infantry in iraq. There is not really to many quality guns made in usa sadly. The German guns seem to exceeds my quality expectations. I love anschutz rifles and hk pistols.

@@tommyboyindy1157 I have all four had to go back the repair jobs were awful. I bought a ruger m77 predator they, replaced with a rifle that ripped chunks out the bullet case. Bought a 2nd ruger m77 online in 22-250 brand new from cabelas special order. They action screw protruded so far out i couldn't work the bolt. The repair job they did was just cut the action screw in half . The stock was still crushed. Went back again needless to say they put a new stock on but it didn't match the original stock. That gun was 4 moa at 100 yards. Had a Redhawk I got for my birthday in 44mag. When a family member who bought it for me open the cylinder boom 💥 finger never was on the Trigger I seen it. That was last ruger . I will never buy a ruger again. Hopefully you have luck with them guns cost too much.i had luck with anschutz rifles, he pistols they work better than my exspatations. My anschutz 1771 in 222rem produced 1 ragged hole for 5 shots with cheap factory ammo with alot differentbrands. Bolt smoothest action i ever seen. My 17hmr anschutz does same thing. My hk pistols never had a failure. My favorite hk p30 feels like it was a custom gun as far fit. Crazy accurate and fast shooting.

I have had to send back brand new Smith and Wessons, revolvers where barrel not indexed straight and terrible machining on barrels, Ruger Blackhawks for barrels not indexed straight, Henry pump and lever 22's for quality issues, AND, HENRY sent me back my rifle with live ammo chambered and 3 live rounds in the tube. Wrote to CEO he wanted name on who signed off on slip in with returned gun... never heard anymore from that. I luckily have lots of true Marlin levers that are great. But, I have a REMLIN only 1 thank goodness in 45-70 that fit and finish look good but the lever will not stay locked closed, let go of it after racking it and it drops down open I never sent it back to Remington cause I was afraid it would come back in worse shape... I dont know where to send it to get proper attn.. Bean counters in place of mgt RUIN any and EVERY business they get control of... Wipe it out then on to the next notch on their resume... Disgusting.

You're right about financial engineering being the root of the problem for Remington. The company was owned by a financial group that got greedy. They did two things that caused long term problems. They cut costs, as you mentioned, moving production to Alabama in a bid for lower labor costs. As many people have noted, the quality of the products dropped significantly. There have been complaints about MIM parts for years, not that those are so bad in themselves. The machining has also been sloppy. Tolerances have been out of spec leading to problems with function and edges have been left so sharp that you can get cut if you happen to put your finger in a modern 870 breech. The second thing they did was change the financial structure of the company. They borrowed more and more money, leaving the company to pay interest and principle back on the debt. In a nutshell, that makes the equity or stock of the company more valuable for the shareholders, provided the company is able to service the debt. But it also increases risk. If the company can't service the debt, it goes bankrupt. Thus, the way the owners pursued profit resulted in lower wages, lower quality and ultimately the bankruptcy of the company. This is a problem that happens regularly in American manufacturing and American business. I prefer to support American workers, but financial managers often don't create the space for workers to make a quality product. Under these circumstances it's difficult to be too sentimental about made in America. The products made in Japan (Winchester, Browning) are excellent. The products made in Europe (Belgium, Czech Republic, Portugal) are often excellent. Vote with your dollars.

Thanks Dave, I had no idea. My first gun was a shotgun made by Remington. It was given to me on my 15th birthday. It's sad what has happened to the American firearms industry, and I think we will regret it someday as well.

It should be a Federal Crime to buy a Company and deliberately run it into the ground in order to steal as much money as possible from the pieces when it is forced into bankruptcy. A jailable offense that you can't "buy" your way out of.

@vettelover2009 Negative!! The entire state of NY can vote Republican by 80% and still lose as long as Cuomo holds the five boroughs. They hold the five boroughs for two reasons. First, they employ nearly 40% of residents in benefit rich government jobs. Second, there’s a concentration of residents in the five boroughs that rely on public assistance. This specific voting block will never vote Republican. Satan could be on the Democratic ticket and still win. So, what’s my point? Well, as it pertains to NY it’s real difficult for a Republican to win. Keep in mind that when George Pataki won he was able to pull a significant number of voters from Suffolk & Nassau county.

I worked there in Ilion as a mechanical engineer on loan from DuPont for two years as a consultant when DuPont owned them at the time. An over two hundred year old company that survived every economic recession including the Great Depression. Now at a time of record sales of guns and ammunition, they go bankrupt? That’s gross mismanage and the managers need to be held accountable. Something went wrong here and it stinks, money was stolen to make the executives rich. A full government investigation needs to be done. A major piece of American history and legacy has been lost forever.

I lived in the town of German Flatts (Mohawk and Ilion) and it has always made me sad what happened to Remington. It was what held this town up. Lots of good people lost jobs. My stepdad worked there for years and left about a year after the Alabama factory opened

Several things doomed Remington. Mismanagement, changing markets, competition, buying too many companies, then closing them... Para-ordanance for one.

Para Ordinance was a Canadian company that made some great pistols at good prices. I had the P12 which is a double stack compact .45 that small hands could use. Not sure why they sold out. The USA made line seemed bloated.

Remington's own engineer testified AGAINST Remington regarding the supposed faulty trigger. That certainly didn't help their bottom line.

We allow CxO executives to drain outsized chunks of Capital away from the company, via Stock and Compensation Packages that are based on stock price. I can think of 10 things off the top of my head, that Boost the Stock Price, but *hurt* the Company. The Capital needs to be put back into the Company.

I had high hopes when I bought a 200th Anniversary Model 700 in 3006 two years ago . I don't know exactly what was wrong with it but it kicked so bad 5 shots and you'd be black and blue . It showed horrid pressure signs with all factory loads and any brand of ammo. I finally got them to refund my money and take it back .

Actually, that is not completely true. The 783 is or was a fantastic rifle. It really is a somewhat modified Marlin X-7. It is a cheap gun but probably the best of the cheap guns. I have Savage, long known for accuracy, besides the 783 and the 783 is the most accurate gun. I also have a Ruger rifle and the 783 is more accurate at quite a bit less money. It is more accurate than the Model 700 in most instances as well.

@@davejensen8882 all you have to do is look at the terrible cheap blueing and feel the roughness of the actions on the newer 700 and 870 compared to the earlier ones . I’d say best cheap rifle is Mauser m18 mine was 424 from eurooptic and has nice trigger , action and shoots constantly 5/8 s moa . Only other cheap rifles I own and can speak for are ruger American go wild and it’s super accurate but has been sent back to ruger for feeding issues twice . They fixed it by taking a poor fit bolt and dremel tooling some on it . Fixed the feeding issue but looks like shit . Also own a howa 1500 lightening rifle and it shoots moa accuracy and has never failed to feed . It’s action is slick and was only 300 bucks . But I would take the Mauser or howa over the axis , ruger American, or any of the newer Remington rifles . I have a 700 bdl made in 2015 and it does not compare fit , finish , trigger, accuracy, to the same rifle I have built in 1976. I don’t usually get super expensive rifles but I’d rather pay the extra over the cheap ones and buy cz and tikka . They are my favorite rifles I own . I reload and shoot quite a bit some of my friends have the rifles you mentioned the axis , 788 , 770 and such . I guess they might be ok for someone but I sure don’t want one .

@@davejensen8882 It is completely true. Their quality disappeared in the late 1990s. I bought a 700 ADL in 1996, one of my best rifles, but it's the last Remington I ever bought. I won a 700 XCR in a raffle in 2008 - complete piece of crap. $1,000 MSRP rifle and I had to replace the trigger to make it usable. Bought Weatherby Vanguards and Savage 10/110s instead.

The quality of Dan Wesson firearms increased when CZ acquired them. Remington’s quality was inconsistent in recent years. The new owners should start by getting out of New York, acquiring some modern CNC machinery, buying the rights to a trigger that won’t keep them in court all the time and a 3-position safety. Then they should travel to see what the people who actually buy their products want. The “new Remington” can make it if they will keep their eye on the ball.

I bought a Marlin(Remlin) 336 two years ago. On the box it said: American craftmanship.... You guys have really hit rock bottom! Im now waiting for a real vintage Winchester 94 to arrive in the mail. Made back when they made real quality products.

@Sensei Tony Marlins are made in the US. The old Winchesters was also made in the US. Quality on US manufactured rifles was a heck of a lot better a few decades ago. I got a friend who has a Rem 700 BDL in 222 rem made in the late 80's. That gun is a gem and high quality workmanship.

There's also been lawsuits regarding the 700 trigger. If I have it right (that could be a big IF) bean counters back in the 50s ignored Mike Walker's advice because they didn't want to spend an extra 47 cents per gun

the bean counter part is not correct, but what is correct is that the Rem 700 series triggers was among the absolute best trigger ever produced for a sporting rifle, adjustable for sear engagement, overtravel, and pull "weight" but as with anything it requires at least two brain cells working together to use correctly. The manual for my 1969 700 BDL goes into great detail about how to adjust it correctly and SAFELY. The lawsuits from a decade and more ago were the direct result of morons doing stupid things, even though the triggers were adjusted at the factory and sealant was put over the adjustment screws, and in so many words, breaking the sealant voided the warranty and placed the responsibility on the owner. In the current world of "IT'S NOT MY FAULT" obviously that isn't good enough. Give a moron a screw to turn, and he will turn it. The design pre-dates the idea of "idiot-proof" because at the time it was designed, the common ideology was that if you were a f'ing idiot, you deserved what you got.

@Keith Hartman You have it correct, faulty trigger has caused many accidental discharges, some resulting in injuries and others deaths. Point in time it got so bad the Marines quit using them. The original design is flawed, period. The 700 could never compete with the Winchester 70 on safety, never. The 700 is extremely popular because there are so many after market parts for them. Another problem the rifle had was the extractor, not something you want to break in a situation when a follow shot could mean life or death.

I will add my two cents here . I have several model 700s and love them. I do however own a 700 mountain rifle in 270 win that had to go back to Remington for repair of the trigger. Brand new rifle taken to the range to site in worked fine. Took it hunting about a month later. Get scope lined up on a deer. Flipped the safety off. Pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. Thought maybe a bad round of ammo. Cycled the action tried again. Trigger did not move. Did not fire. I then put the safety back on and the rifle fired. Took it back to camp. We tested several times unloaded and each time the same result. The rifle only fired once the safety had been placed in the safe position. Sent it back to Remington. They replaced the entire trigger group and returned it with a letter saying the trigger group was corroded. New rifle fresh from the gun store. Never been in rain. Made one trip to the gun range and on the first day of hunting season has a major malfunction. Glad nobody got hurt. Still have the rifle and enjoy hunting with it. I have seen far too many blaming owners. Plain and simple they definitely had trigger issues that were not the fault of the end user.

Sad indeed. I have a 700 VS .220 Swift since the early 90's. Still one of my favourite tools.

I have only one real Remington...a Model 788 in 6mm Remington. I Will keep it until the day I die, then it goes to my grandson.

Mr. Drake you are basically correct. I worked for Remington Arms Company, Inc. for 27 great years starting in ammunition manufacturing in Bridgeport CT and winding up in Marketing in Wilmington, DE in 1995 with many stops in between. Remington was a wonderful company, a good place to work with solid professional friends and associates. We also had a terrific "smarts" legacy in gun and ammo design with many obvious successes. We had a dominant market position. Throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's we sold firearms on allocation, meaning they were too few made to satisfy total demand. When DuPont decide to sell they had some folks look around for a buyer and it did not have to be an existing manufacturer. In fact they preferred that as they were more afraid of anti-trust charges than selling to another arms company. Instead they sold to a financial company which began the process of leveraging the company. Borrowing $ to line their own pockets at the expense of the company. They took on new "partners", bought unnecessary other companies as investments in "Scale" , further leveraging themselves. Then turned the company over to more investment types and became fully leveraged. This never happened when we were part of DuPont. In the end, lawsuits and greed and the avarice of those who ran Remington forced it into a terminal bankruptcy, a liquidation followed. What was once a great company, with great people, great products and great and supportive customers was taken apart by this turn of events. There are people out there in this country today, living well and beyond their own true worth, living on the backs of a company they killed. Those with whom I worked were never greedy or avaricious. We were proud of Remington and its products. Its the legacy I prefer, not the one judged by the years 1995 to present.

Judges allowing law suites for actions of a twisted individual,to sue companies with No involvement in a crime has to stop. Lawyers suites should be refused for lack of culpability

My 1100 was made in 1976 and is in great shape. I'm glad I have an old one. And it's a 3" model. My friend bought a newer 1187. It broke. He heard something rattle inside the gun. He shook it and a small piece of sheared metal fell out. I saw this myself. It made me sad, I've been a Remington guy all my life.

Good and accurate video. I miss most Remington 1100 shotguns with beautiful wood and a high quality finish that we could purchase in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. It's sad what became of Remington.

I worked at the Huntsville factory for first 2 1/2 years it was open. I've been into long range target shooting, reloading, doing most all of my own gunsmith long before working there. I knew their reputation hadn't been good for awhile but had high hopes for Huntsville to be a turn around for them. I was wrong. I couldn't believe the garbage they would let go out the doors. I worked in the test range & 100yrd accuracy range mostly. All of the upper management & supervisors had no business with anything firearms related. Just a peice of paper that said they went to school somewhere. It made me sick at the lack of pride they had. I quit right before the 2016 election. I saw the writing on the wall.

@@mdredheadguy1979 At least Ruger bought the Marlin division from Freedon Group. Ruger is an American company that is well run and probably will bring Marlin back to it's former status.

At the 2018 shot show I asked the sales representative a half dozen questions. He couldn't answer 1 about their products. I asked him how can you come to a trade show and not know anything about firearms? It's the corporate mindset you don't need to know the product you just have to know how to manage people. It bankrupted Remington.

Harkening back to my 1972 Business Management class... the two main reasons businesses fail is lack of capital and poor management. Remington, in spades...

Business 101!

When you operate any business you must reinvest into your company. I know this by my personal experience, however government regulations on businesses can do much harm when they over regulate. Thank you Dave, I myself is another from 1963. From the deep south in the far north, America's Warehouse...Alaska.

Got looted to death by Wall Street Moguls (TM). Geoff Who notes that's what happens when the looters come.

I have bought defected three Rem 700s in a row. Even a replaced one was defected. They are now great rifles after I personally machine, trim, polish, and replace the triggers. Wheres other manufacturers such as Savage worked their butt off to catch up with Remington. Remington really deserves it .

I bought a v3 a few years ago and love it. I really hope someone picks it up.

Today, March1st, 2021: Thank goodness, CZ has purchased Colt. And, Marlin went to Ruger. Wish Remington would have landed with a gun group. Great vid, Ty.

I have a Remington 700 BDL 30-06 from 1978 and it's my favorite rifle. It's a rifle i'm gonna keep for the rest of my life!

I have 3 older Remington firearms. A 700 BDL made in 1972, an 1100 made the same year, and a 742 made in 1959. All well made and have been workhorses.

I have the same favortite rifle in 7mm mag of about the same age....it's my favorite as well. She's getting a bit old and nicked up but she's still capable of precision and 390 yard eastern Kentucky elk. Yes, we have elk herds in eastern Kentucky now.

I only own one Remington. It's a model 721 in 30 06 made in 1947 and I love it. It's sad to see an icon run into the ground as badly as Remington was.

Remington is still in business they called back the most seniority employees at illion NY after the new company who had bought them and are to resume firearm manufacturing with the recently bankrupt sale of the different parts of Remington Vista a.k.a. federal ammunition owns Remington‘s name so that is yet to be seen as to what the new firearms at Illion NY will be named but I’m guessing it’ll be something like the Winchester Olin group corporation

South Texas, the investment firm that bought the firearms manufacturer part, recently got their FFL and claim they are starting production up agin this spring. We shall see how they do. Hopefully they can get their quality control under control and not put out so much junk like they have the past few years.

No they did not call back the most senior people. I don't know where you got your information from but you are wrong. There was no rhyme or reason on the call backs. You would think they called people back based on experience but that didn't happen either otherwise myself and the rest of the Senior Repair people who work on every model ever produced there would have been called back and none of us were. Besides no one is working back there yet.

How unfortunate , my 700 and 870 are my two favorite hunting firearms. There’s newer, cooler stuff out there, but I always figured they would be there as a benchmark, and for future generations.

I bought a 870 last spring. Great shotgun. First shotgun I ever own.

Remington 270 Ammo 130 grain shoots very accurate. many deer accounted for with it.

Just because of this, I’m going to pull out my 1100 shotgun and admire how she looks, and how many hours and rounds I put thru her with any even of my reloads. I think I have a winner.🇺🇸

Bought a 870 Wingmaster with 2 barrels in 1974 for $134. Thousands of rounds through it. Still my do everything shotgun.

They have had a lot of recall issues on their bolt actions since the 50’s too. Fire when you close the bolt.

The investment group bilked Remington out of all it's cash, highly leveraged them with debt... New owner has acquired it, and claims he'll restore it to it's former glory, starting with about 200 employees, here in Ilion NY. Remington will resume production, hopefully soon. The new ownership had to wait for their federal firearms licensing.......

Happens to a lot of companies, hedge funds come in, bleed a company dry, and leave after making a ton of money. Companies left in ruins. Hedge funds should be held liable for employees wellfare.

My first rifle was a model 700 in 30-06 ( lefty ) and my first shotgun was a model 870 wing master magnum 12 ga. Great guns

I went through them too. they tried too destroy our pensions from Chrysler. then wrecked Remington. Cerabus is the most worthless, damaging equity investment company in the US. They should be locked up in jail. legal criminals..don't know how.

I have a second 870 from early 1980’s. I’ve never had an issue with the OEM extractor or follower and believe for the most part others don’t either. Not worried about it on the new gun either. If anything breaks, there will be aftermarket replacements around for a long time even if Remington doesn’t make a comeback.

Rudyard. There are almost NO parts for most anything available today. The last 12 yrs people are hoarding there worn out guns and none are hitting the parts market. Just look how many gun smiths have closed.

I have a rem 24 from the 30s complete with shell deflector that is as they say a “tack driver”

870's are coming back on it's historic production line. Believe they said March. Outside that besides Ruger and Henry believe Smith and Wesson also still makes guns in the US.

I was in a gun store and had a mild disagreement about Remington,I said generally the same thing ,that a company with this history that generally goes down in flames is being mismanaged and this is the end product,he blamed everything on the lawsuits and I called bullshit on that one,the manufacturing in Bama and the union play also might had something to do with it and from what I’ve seen of pics there facilities looked from the 1920s,in the historic last 20 years of gun sales along with ammo demand and you fail it’s your own fault....pew pew.....

Everyone in North Alabama was excited when they got here, now not so much. My Remington 783 does have “Huntsville, AL” stamped on the barrel which is cool to have your hometown on a rifle. But I am disappointed for sure and hope they figure it out in the future.

Well, I got my 2nd gen Rem 700 5-R so I'm gtg as far as Remington goes. Everything else is Savage and Winchester in both classic and modern gens. Even have a 303 British that hunts just as good as my .270 and .30-06 cals. Just get what you want/can and keep it moving.

here's why. if u want something to go away. ya send someone in to run it into the ground.

Seen it happen before in pretty much every industry. The management comes in that has the business degrees and the paper on the wall, but they don't have a clue about the product or the customer base. They're there to get their salary and bonuses and perks. They make major changes that make no sense so if everything goes to the good, they can turn around and say " This great thing happened because of the practices that I put in place. . ." If things don't work out, they take their sign on bonus and what money they made and their severance and head to the Bahamas for 2 months. Used to be that workers with an affinity for the job and the most experience and qualifications got the job, but that's not true anymore. Go to any company or retail store and chances are great that there'll be somebody waiting on you that shouldn't have the job they do

I believe you overlooked something in your statement which seems to be lost when people are dumping on Remington. Just to be clear, the 700 design is rock solid and that's why you have so many manufacturers copying it.

Sold my dad’s 1,100 years ago. Would be close to 100 years old! Wish I had it now!

You NEVER sale a firearm, never.

Looked high and low for a Marlin Model 60 .22LR. Used would be fine but had to settle for a Ruger 10/22. We’ll see how it goes.

Freedom Group moved from Windham, Maine but it's been brought back by local workers and Management under a new company name Windham Weaponry making a great AR with the same employees. Great Gunsmiths. Great Rifles..

Every rifle and shotgun I owned was a Remington till two years ago bought a new V3 semi-auto shotgun had massive problems customer service was horrible sad to say it would take a lot to get me to buy another Remington
