Remington Rolling Block Shotgun, 20 Gauge

Ғылым және технология

In this video we have a look at a Remington Rolling block shotgun chambered for the 20 gauge 2-3/4" shell. This shotgun is a conversion of a Remington Rolling block rifle, the conversion could possibly have been done by the famous arms dealers Francis Bannerman Sons.

    I really enjoy these rifles. I only have two, however. The first is a Danish in 11.7 X 51R and the other is an unmarked one (probably Mexican) in 7 X 57. Great fun to load for. Enjoy!

    I guess I got lucky with mine, as the exterior is pretty rough, but the insides are in great shape. The Dane, as you would expect, is pristine.

    Well, that concept certainly fits in with the "economy" of the times. I understand that the original 50-70 trapdoor Springfields were converted from 50 cal muzzle loaders until the existing stocks were used up before starting new manufacture.

    I've seen a few in 50-70 but they are priced for collectors. You can still get ones that were used by the Swedish in there 12.7 black powder round round relatively cheap but if you want it in something like 45-70 then they run about 2K and up. A reproduction in 45-70 will cost you about $1500.

    back in the 60s and before then you could find plenty of these kind of conversions done on obsolete single shot black powder rifles in south america. they worked,and the ones made from rollingblocks and comblains actually were good shotguns.

    not in really active service but really relegated to nice heirlooms to pass on. thing is that some of them have seen really heavy use as cheap shotguns back then and then passed along and getting sold. so most of them are in not so good shape unless they remained in the family or among the few real gun collectors that still remain.

    I have one of the SA Light Baby Carbines someone (probably a native of Uruguay) converted to 11.1x50,, shotshell, probably to comply with local law there prohibiting civilian ownership of a gun chambered for a military round. However, they left the 43 bore's rifling intact. This meant it can now be fired with just about any 44 cartridge, from 44 Special on down (including the original 44-40) to 44 Bulldog while still in technical compliance with Uruguay law. A 444 Marlin brass cut down to 50mm fits perfectly as a replacement for the 11.15x50mm shotshell. I have a video up of me blowing up logs with it.

    For what it's worth, I don't think that's a converted NY State Model, though it may have still been in .50-70 originally. NY State Models will have a much taller ear on the hammer block, and the hammer will actually drop to half-cock when you close the breech block as a safety precaution, which is a very unique thing that no other rolling block does. Either way it's a super neat shotgun!

    I would be sure the one you are looking at has no choke or that any slug you may fire in it is smaller than the choke. As for a "muzzle-loading adapter" I guess one would work OK in one of these, but I have no personal experience with them.

  • @Phil-qc3ei
    @Phil-qc3ei10 жыл бұрын

    So you think the barrel started out as a rifle barrel and was bored out for a shotgun? Some of the research I have done suggests the gun was designed to be a shotgun, just using the same design and a lot of the same parts as the carbines

  • @314299

    @314299

    10 жыл бұрын

    This one is most certainly a re-bored rifle, the rear sight dove tail is still present under the fore end (they took a bit off off the barrel so it could be screwed in 1/2 turn further to hid the sight cut). As you mention there were purpose built rolling block shotguns, but this was not one of them. With any of these old guns you have to determine what is safe for the individual gun, they are not all equal by any means.

    Yes there were factory made rolling block shotguns but I'm quite sure this one was converted from a rifle as there is a sight dovetail hidden under the fore end. It appears that when the barrel was re-bored and re-chambered they took some material off the breach end so the barrel could be turned in a 1/2 turn further to hide the old rear sight dovetail.

    +henrikosanna I dont think that writer is correct. That groove on the top of the receiver would be very easy to add to a reused rifle receiver, but what is more of an indication that this firearm was converted to a shotgun from a rifle is the presence of a rear sight dovetail on the back of the barrel. On mine they hid the dovetail by indexing the barrel 180 degrees from it's original position so the dovetail is now beneath the fore-end.
