Remington Revival - First Fifteen Firings from the 6mm Model 788 Donor Rifle

Спорт

Trying out the Remington 788 "Donor Rifle" that was featured in my Rifle Forensics video.
At some point durning the shooting, the camera at the bench stopped recording, and I don't have footage of the full second group of 85 grain bullets - and none of the 100 grain shots were recorded. I do have target camera footage documenting all of the shots. I still have five of the 100 grain rounds to try another day!

this for the video. I recently found 2 788s in 30-30 and 44 magnum. I'm in the process of finishing the 30-30 I got last week. The previous owner broke the ejector so I'm the process of ordering a bunch of ejectors as these rifles share the same ejectors. I've had the 44 out and its a thumping tack driver. Very cool rifle. It'll be with me this fall during hunting season. Good luck with your work on yours.

When my buddy and I went groundhog shooting!! Up in mid Ontario Canada,,He had a Remington 700 in a 22-250 heavy barrel and I had the Tikka M55 in 6mm Rem. 6x18 Bushnell scope..We had more fun that I could ever think.of..

22-250 is one of the 788 chamberings that I haven’t purchased yet. I do have a nice flat bolt Ruger M77V though. 🙂 Thanks for the note.

I finally broke down and bought my 788. Glass bedded action, pillar block bedded, Temken trigger, Boyd stock, floated barrel, parallax scope. Less than MOA at 100 yards. Tack driver.

My 788 in 6mm Rem was my first deer rifle. To this day its the most accurate rifle I own. As far as hand loads go, I have always shot 100gr Sierra GK for deer over IMR 4350. I spent some time doing load development with those components and what I found was that the hotter I loaded, the tighter the groups got.

I have that same rifle. To this day it’s my go to deer rifle. Had it bedded and floated and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more accurate gun. It’s no beauty queen, but I didn’t get it to look at it. I love the 6mm. Superior to the .243 in every way. The 6mm Remington actually has a pretty interesting story behind it if you care to look it up.

I like the 788, I always keep an eye out for them. I have them in both 6mm and 243, among other chamberings. They are on the list of rifles for more range time and videos.

This was a fun video, thank you. The 788 is an interesting rifle series. My limited research indicates Remington manufactured left-handed versions for several years in 6mm Rem & 308 Win. I hope to find a LH 6mm in decent condition in the near future. Thanks again.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it! Keep in mind that the left hand models still eject on the right side - only the bolt handle is moved to the left. With the .473” bolt face, they were at one time a decent budget action for a bench rifle in one of the BR Remington chamberings.

@@WilliamCChapin Thank you. No worries on the right side ejection. My Browning T-Bolt 22lr with LH bolt has right side ejection, as well. It is a beautifully made heavy barreled 22lr. All the best in 2024.

The rifle may not be that interesting, the cartridge on the other hand is hands down better than the .243. It's a shame the 6mm Remington couldn't get the traction or hype that it deserves compared to the 6.5 Creedmoor (which is excellent by the way). I foresee one day the 6mm Remington being the next target for firearms and cartridge marketing and I'm sure the public will enjoy a rifle that shoots through the same hole.
