Alot of people bashing you for making a small upgrade. If you don't want to replace the mim extractor then don't. If you are using a shotgun setup for personal defense then 20 dollars for a machined extractor is well worth it. To wait for the mim extractor to break before upgrading can mean the difference between life and death.

I did this replacement without disassembly in 30 seconds. Open the action, pop out the old extractor and pop in the new one. Done.

MIM is not stamping. It is metal injection molding, basically powdered metal mixed with plastic and then injected molded. Then the part is fired in an oven where all of the plastic is removed, and what you have left is a metal part. This process is much cheaper than machining to manufacture parts. I used to work for a company that made MIM parts.

  • @Beesa10

As I understand it MIM is not as precise due to some shrinkage when the parts are are fired but where precision isn't critical the MIM process is a very cost effective way of producing small parts. The MIM parts may not look pretty compared with machined parts (so they don't inspire confidence) but are plenty strong enough.

  • @bart99gt

    @bart99gt

If they’re not accounting for shrinkage after it cools, then the engineers in charge of the process should be fired. That said, I would imagine the MIM and machined parts are probably dimensionally identical.

6 in one hand 1/2 dozen in the other . MIM parts and cast part technology has come a long way.... there tolerances are pretty dang good and most will never break under normal wear and tear..... but they could ..... if you want the piece and mind , get a milled part. Keep in mind stronger doesn’t mean better or that it will fit well. Neither of my volquartsen extractors fit flawlessly, and neither run smoothly without some hand work which was disappointing considering is was the most expensive all steel extractor I could buy

MIM has been given a bad name by a lot of people that really dont know what they are talking about. The overwhelming number of failures of MIM parts happens when the weapon/part are new or nearly new. In some cases, there can be occlusions, or voids within the metal that create a weak spot and they fracture and break under operational load. Most MIM parts that are not highly stressed components will work great for a very long time. Naturally for high stress applications, a machined bar stock piece will generally be more durable over time, but not necessarily more reliable. For most people in most applications, an MIM part is entirely adequate and is much cheaper to mass produce.

You explained this really well. I tell people the same but I had a dude on FB argue with me saying MIM is just another name for solid steel. And it may be after all the other stuff is burned off.

If you’ll take a brass brush on a cleaning rod, same size as your chamber, wrap the brush with 0000 steel wool and a lot of oil on it and run it in and out of the barrel chamber on a drill for about 5 minutes on medium speed, you won’t have extraction issues with these Express shotguns. The chambers need polishing. Remington doesn’t polish them like they did on the Wing Masters. Plastic shotgun shells swell when fired and the plastic gets caught in the imperfections from the milling of the chamber. If you polish that out, you’ll be good to go. Has anyone seen first hand a MIM extractor go bad. I’ve heard of it but not seen it. My 1100 was made in 1967 so it has a solid one. Anyway, thanks for the video. 👍🏻

I did this upgrade with the bolt still in the receiver. The volquartsen was not a perfect fit in my 870. It would make contact with the inside rear of the ejection port when racked rearward. I noticed the volquartsen has more of a hump back and needed filing down to fit properly. I tried it once at the range and it worked fine. Having said that, the original mim part had 100's of rounds on it and showed no sign of failing. Save your money. Buy ammo.

My mim extractor has never had any issues regardless of the load. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging the volquartsen. My 870 is a 2014 and everyone knows Reminton's qc was in the gutter at the point. Maybe my receiver is slightly out of spec? I needed to file down the back of the extractor so it didn't make contact with the receiver. No big deal. Enjoy your 870.@@bloodycrepe

@@deathb4digital My 2015 rem 870 super magnum had nothing but issues with high winchester shells. That's mostly because of poor machining quality of that remington era. The shells expand and bind to machining marks in the barrel. Factory extractor couldn't handle it. No issues after upgrade to volquartsen extractor. I purchased another rem 870 in 2021. It's built 100 times better. No machining marks anywhere. But I still upgraded the extractor. It's much sharper than factory, built using higher tolerances and it's built to last a life time. Totally worth it. To be fair, many firearms have issues with stock extractors - ruger, stoeger, winchester. I am not sure why manufacturers cut corners with such a cheap part.

I just can't jump on the non- MIM extractor bandwagon. I purchased my 870 SuperMag new in 2012 and have never had extraction issues so I see no need to change it. Most modern COLT 1911s use MIM parts and I don't hear anyone complaining about failures. If my MIM extractor breaks then I'll replace it, but not until then. Leatherman tools plier heads are MIM and I don't hear about constant breakage of those either. Companies saying MIM parts are inferior (which could be true in SOME applications) is just a technique used to separate a fool from his money.

I replaced the extractors in both my 870s. Both are turkey guns and both have seen a few hundred rounds over the last decade. Never broke an MIM extractor or had any issues . I replaced them anyway. Was disappointed with the fit of the volquartsen. The grind a little , one even hangs up. Required polishing on my end. They are also known to damage receivers if they stick out too much, supposedly volquartsen has fixed that. Mine work fine, just ran rough until I cleaned them up. If I had it to do over again I would have saved a few dollars and bought the Remington steel extractors , assuming the fit would have been closer to the original

You need to polish your chamber bud. Make sure where the extractor mates to the chamber is clean and burr free. But being hard to pump is definetly a chamber issue. Also when shooting hot rounds the hull may swell a little . Keep it real clean. Steel wool on a drill works wonders. Jb bore bright on scotch pad works wonders. If money ain’t a problem, a flex hone for the chamber from brush research really works wonders.

The action would not budge and you had to fiddle with it for minutes to get it to release. I was hoping it was just because it was new and needed to be broken in. The second time I took it out I would say it failed to extract (the action is completely jammed) every 5 or so rounds. Could upgrading e extractor be the issue? Only other thing I could find is that people say machining inside the chamber is not a smooth as older/higher grade models and that the round gets caught m the grooves when trying to extract. Very annoying and not very reassuring.

Regardless, as shared in the vid, the reasons these are replaced is that the MIM extractors are inferior to the machined versions and Remington tends to agree which is why they are installed in the higher end models like the Wingmasters and special purpose models.

Both are solid. I find the ADM mounts have to be more on the snug side to retain true zero which kinda removes some of their ability to "quick" detach since you have to use two hands to remove them.

What is the point of replacing this... my 870 Express (1992 vintage) has probably 15000-20000 rounds and no issues whatsoever? More stuff to lighten your wallet is all it is.

@@Highjak86 Ok, if you say so. I used to shoot a LOT of trap and Skeet with it back in the 90's, back when you were just a little squirt. But, I guess you probably would know better, since you spent $20 on a part you probably didn't need. Oh, and MIM is NOT metal stamping, for your information. You should do a little research before you reveal your experience level.

The quilty of your older gun is all around better. My 1187 I bought in 2015 has been junk for most target rounds. I'm hoping this part helps.

There is nothing wrong with MIM parts. Some people just live in the past. Same with old farts and Poly pistols. Old fossils who don't keep up with the pack.

The unreliability of these extractors should be a recall, and should be a ALL-STOP to Remington’s manufacturing process. Firearms are made and used to save lives and protect gross bodily injuries sometimes; Remington knows this and continues to crap out unreliable shotguns to save a few dollars? We already know that most American flags are made by Chinese children who are breathing unfiltered diesel particulated atmosphere, but what now…make an American gun so unreliable that can fail when we need it to save lives so we can save a few dollars? Well, wait…our country leader, corrupt government, not justice but just legal system, never-ending money printing, endless debt up our asses…hmmmm, it all making sense. Nevermind. I can’t complain about just a shotgun anymore. It’s all going to end soon.
