That's Socia HR was devastating. I couldn't believe it. The mets went down hill for there. That was as loathsome as Bill Buckner behind the bag. That was the end of an era. They were horrible in 89 and 90 stayed in the pennant till about September. Then along came the knicks and Giants. But never has the franchise recovered from that performance in 88. Talk about Piazza and Harvey. Not close. We weren't going to beat the Yankees in 2000. Though we had that chance in game 1 wasn't for Timo Perez. 2006-08. Choked three straight years. 15, Cepedes doesn't catch a ball in the outfield game 1. Why is it that we can't catch a break besides Buckner in the sé big games? It's something are guy always does that gives the other team the wind that carries them to a victory. Choke artist we are I tell you. It will never end.

Had the Mets won Game 4, they would have been up 3-1 and while they would lose game 5 the next day at Shea, they would’ve wrapped up that series back in Los Angeles the next night winning game 6, and not have had to face Orel in 7. Had they won Game 4, they would have treated Game 6 like they did in Houston two years earlier with the threat of facing Mike Scott in Game 7, with urgency. Now would they have beaten the A’s in that WS? Let’s remember that Oakland won 104 games that year and they were loaded with McGwire, Canseco and they had pieces like Henderson who hit the HR against the Mets two years earlier for Boston (which the Mets would win in the bottom of that legendary 10th) and was the same Boston team which Oakland swept in the ALCS. And unlike Boston two years earlier, they had a bonafide lights out closer on the back end in Eckersley. See that would’ve been a tougher series for the Mets in 88, than it was in 86 v Boston, had they gotten by LA.

@@PrometheusForever It was 1987 that was the most disappointing. Orosco and McDowell must have cost us fifteen wins between them. Even giving them the benefit of seven or eight games that's still seven or eight losses going our way and we win the division. Davey was crazy not to unleash Randy Myers until the vey end when it was already too late. He was mowing down those Cardinals like it was harvest time when they met at the end. They couldn't touch him but it was too late.

Mets made the postseason two times in the 1980's = 1986 and 1988. And the three teams that they faced in those two postseasons (Houston, Boston, Dodgers), they faced pitchers from each team that were having SENSATIONAL seasons (and won their league cy youngs) = Mike Scott of Houston in 1986, Roger Clemens of Boston (who also won the AL MVP in 1986), Orel Hershiser of Dodgers in 1988. It was just unreal how the Mets just couldnt catch a break facing those pitchers having Super elite seasons.

  • @ryanstrnad8442

The Mets blew it. Even though he wasn't tagged as the losing pitcher either time, but they started the series 2-0 against Orel Herschiser who technically extended his record scoreless streak until the 9th inning of game 1. They coughed up a ninth inning lead at home in game 4. Maybe that rainout on Friday night hurt, thus making for a quick turnaround at Shea for game 5 at 12pm edt they were talking about (to accommodate a Game 5 in the Oakland-Boston series that wasn't needed as well as Monday Night Football) kept that drawdown still in their heads. This years' entire postseason considering the excitement and the big market teams as well as the popular teams (Bash brothers A's team & the Red Sox) sort of doubled as an improntu showcase for the upcoming TV rights negotiations for MLB that got outsider CBS to pay well over a billion dollars for a 4 year package that included exclusive network rights. ESPN put up a lot too for a new cable package.

Dodgers blew game 1 and Mets blew game 4, so being 2-2 at the end of game 4 was normal. Mets fans all know they should have won game 4, but if the Dodgers had lost, they would be saying the same thing about game 1 where Lasorda pulled the outfielders back and Shelby couldn't catch what would have been a line out to center field. If neither team is blowing leads in the 9th inning, it should have been 2-0 Dodgers, then series tied at 2-2, and then games 5, 6, and 7 are the same result. I don't know if the game 4 carried into game 5 or not, but yes, the Mets would have won that series in 5 or 6 games if they didn't blow game 4. The series was won by the Dodgers because they won 2 out of the last 3. They won games 5 and 7.

Although I love Dave Roberts, he could have learned a few things from Tommy about riding by the seat of his pants while managing in a big game and series. If Tommy was the manager against Boston a few years ago, the outcome may had been different. That's because Dave relied WAY TOO MUCH on the "analytics" when Tommy would rely more on GUT. I believe Tommy is MORE responsible for the '88 victory than either Hershiser OR Gibson because he could have ignored the aberration and stuck with "the book." But Tommy WAS that infamous River Boat Gambler, a James Bond type figure (without the debonair quality, of course) who liked to toss caution into the Category 5 hurricane JUST TO SEE WHAT COULD HAPPEN. Tommy was the ULTIMATE Adrenaline Junky. And was also one of the luckiest bastards of all time. And has been said many times before, "It's ALWAYS better to be 'lucky' than it is to be 'good,' because a person CAN'T buy 'luck.'" You're either born with it°... or you're not.

As a lifelong Dodger & ⚾️ fan, the ‘88 Dodgers were prob the worst team to ever win a WS. 94 wins in LA vs 100 wins in NY + the Mets beat them 10 out of 11 in regular season. Scioscia’s 2 run 9th inning HR vs Doc in Game 4 was equivalent to Robert Horry’s GW 3 pointer vs the Sac Kings. Instead of being down 3-1, they were tied 2-2. The ‘88 Dodgers were like the ‘83 NC State 🏀 team - underdogs til the end. Not taking anything away from Orel’s majestic performance the entire season & postseason as well as Gibson’s 🔥 & leadership, but you’re telling me Mickey Hatcher, Rick Dempsey, Alfredo Griffin, T-Bone Shelby, Mike Davis, & E-4 Steve Sax (which is over 1/2 the roster) were better than the mighty Mets? I 💙 the way the season turned out as a Dodger fan, but no way the best NL team won that year. Pitching & true grit by a bunch of scrappy unsung heroes is why LA won. The Mets were solid from ‘84-‘88… similar to the ‘84-‘88 Chicago Bears: but only 1 🏆 to show for it. It’s almost as if they’ve never fully recovered from this series. 2 World Series appearances since then w/a 2-8 record in those games.

They used to alternate home field between East and West. Note that the Astros in 1986 had "home field" (1, 2, 6, 7) as well, despite that they also won fewer games than the 108 game winning '86 Mets.

@@ryanevans8566 That was so stupid of how baseball basically "randomly" assigned home field in each postseason series (1997 was the last time they did this I think for the first two rounds). They still "randomly" assigned the World Series until 2002, when now its the winner of the All Star game that gets homefield in the WS. Another example is Cleveland in 1995 = They had the best record in all of baseball, but they didnt have homefield in any of the 3 playoff rounds. I think the Mets were supposed to have home field in 1986 against Houston in the NLCS, but then it was given to Houston because of a scheduling conflict with the NFL (something like that from, but I might be wrong)

Mets were the best team in 1988, and also 2006. But they blew it in both years to inferior teams. It always annoyed me because I felt that team was every bit as talented as the 90's Yankees teams, if not more so. But hard partying, drugs, and poor managing at times from Davey Johnson prevented them from being a dynasty like those Yankee teams. Yet Daryl Strawberry, who won 2 titles with the Yanks, says the 1986 Mets were the best team he ever played for.

Of course the Mets were the best team in 1988. I believe they would have beaten the A's if they had gotten that far. Johnson mismanaged game 4 a little bit and it was enough to give the Dodgers the series. It seemed like the rain out of game 3 even helped the Dodgers. It allowed Lasorda to start Hershiser on short rest for it, and it happened to line him up for game 7 while Johnson saved Gooden for game 4 instead. It appeared that Johnson made the right move with the Mets winning game 3 and leading game 4 by two runs headed into the 9th until the walk and 2 run homer happened and the series turned. With the series tied 2-2 and Hershisher pitching one more time in game 7 without Gooden pitching, the Dodgers had a clear advantage in the deciding game. Games 5 and 6 were split and the Dodgers got ahead early on Darling and Hershisher threw a CG. The Mets were clearly better versus the rest of the league with a deeper pitching staff and better hitters, but the Dodgers just had a lot of fight in them that year.
