Remembering Nanci Griffith, with The Kennedys, Sunday, August 15, 2pm EDT!

Музыка

The process of our grieving over the loss of our soulmate Nanci Griffith has included moments of joy that we knew her so well and for so long. The mutually-endured rigors of international travel, the daily pageant of travel to new places, and especially the transcendent moments when she sang us, and her audience, to that light beyond the woods; those are the memories that bring smiles to our faces. She left more than just memories, though. The gift of her songs, those she wrote and those she curated from the best of the best; that's a gift that will keep on giving for generations to come.
On Sunday, Aug 15 at 2pm EDT, we celebrate those songs, and the times we spent with Nanci on the long road, with an hour of music and stories, an informal memorial gathering. It will be a casual in-the-moment mix, and we encourage our viewers to take part with requests and comments, just as if we were all gathered in a special place to honor her memory.
Nanci was one of a kind, a real they-broke-the-mold artist, and if we can invoke a bit of her magic on Sunday, it will be a healing moment for all who feel the void that she leaves behind.
Note: We'll postpone our summer dance party for a week or so.
Thanks to all who are able to help us out w/your optional tips, which we accept via PayPal:

Or Venmo: venmo.com/The_Kennedys
Or: checks via snail mail: PO Box 8673, Tarrytown NY 10591

Great tribute. Nanci was a beautiful soul. One of my all-time favorite Nanci Griffith songs (Gulf Coast Highway), captures Nanci's passing, so beautifully: "And when she dies she says she'll catch some blackbird's wing And she will fly away to heaven Come some sweet blue bonnet spring"

I'm a Dublin man and I know Nanci lived here at one time. My big regret is now I didn't get to see her because I was so caught up in life then to get the time for gigs even though I loved her music. Now I'm the same age as Nanci and most nights I listen to her and watch her shows with a couple of beers. And I'm so saddened at her loss, like I lost a real friend who I never got the chance to see and maybe even get to tell her how much I love her music. Loving this tribute.

Mikki3562, I know thousands and thousands of folks feel the way you do. Nanci's songs spoke to us all on such a deep, personal level. I do know that Nanci loved Dublin, and I accompanied her there several times. I know that her spirit resides there for sure...she had a soul connection to your beautiful city, she wrote about it more than once, and she always looked forward to returning. Keep her music in your heart, and she'll never truly be gone. - MK

I just paused the video that I’m watching, Nanci’s remembrance. When I found out she passed up, I cried ( I’m 63). It hurt my heart. I never saw her live and I regret that. During the 1980’s, her music pulled me mentally, and emotionally out of many hard times. Since I heard of her death, I’ve listen to “Love At The Five and Dime “25-30 times. It’s my favorite her songs, well favorite of 20 songs but this is the top of the pyramid for me. I’m so sorry for YOUR loss and pain. Thank you for your Sunday shows which I just discovered. I’ll.be there on Sundays, Okie time. I’ll catch y’all on stage maybe if this plague lifts from the land. MASKS.

In 1985, I worked as a volunteer at The Speakeasy musicians cooperative in Greenwich Village, NYC. My job this one Friday night was to set up microphones for the headlining musical act ...someone named Nanci Griffith. As I stood next to her, making sure she was plugged in, the mic was at the right height and angle for her to sing, she was so approachable and grateful for my efforts. As the lights dimmed and the emcee introduced her, I stood on the side in this teeny tiny venue (a middle eastern restaurant by day, a night club by night) looking out at the packed room, not knowing what to expect. I am not a religious man but, as so many have said everywhere else, when she opened her mouth to sing, hers was the voice of an angel. The warmth and passion of her music was equally as stunning. I have been enraptured by Nanci ever since, so thankful for having met her and for the simple, soulful joy her music has brought to my life. And, like so many others, I have been taken aback by how sad I have been since her passing. I have stood in the kitchen, listening to her songs, and cried. I am humbled by her words, her music and her spirit. I miss just knowing she is in the world; there is a hole in it now. @Maura&Pete, thank you for this. I know it is helping me, and others, to grieve, accept and eventually heal. RIP, Ms. Griffith.

At a Nanci-G concert in '89, she and the band did the 1st tune and the band mix was too loud. When she asked the crowd how the sound was, a guy near me called out that the band was too loud, whereupon Nanci dressed him down by saying that she does not go to his work and yell at him. I felt badly for him as she had inquired, but at the end, when she tossed out the customary yellow rose, it flew directly into this guys hands. A miracle that I'm sure Nanci would have appreciated.

Like most who were lucky enough to hear you two sing, I was a huge Nanci fan and saw her many times live, the first at the Bass Auditorium on the UT Austin campus in the late 1980's and once at the Ryman where people actually danced in the aisles. You aren't strangers either. I met you when you played at a club in Memphis in the late 90's, and Maura, you wore clothes you had bought that day vintage clothes shopping. When we were young, back in the early 1960's in our Austin neighborhood, Nanci and I and our friend Sheri would sit in her front yard, Nancy would play her guitar and sing us songs she had made up. One I loved and remember for all these years was one about a young girl who got her toes stuck in the track, a rail road track. I will always remember those days.

Most of all for allowing her to shine through the stories and music and to connect us to that beautiful spirit that has now gone home. She truly knew that the purpose in life was to do as much good as one could while here, and that she did do. Do know that you have done right by her, with grace as you dedicated this week to her, and we are most fortunate for your very own gifts and talents. I wouldn’t want to box you ‘in’ to making your life a reprise of Nanci’s, but any sops you can throw to us in the future would sure be appreciated. You do great renditions of her work! I discovered Nanci in my discovery of Bluegrass, Alison Krauss, and Emmilou Harris. Then Nanci! She had similar roots, yet could be SO NANCI! And she hooked me the first time I heard heard her. And to see her cherubic, enthusiastic/humorous, munchkin face: She seemed to smile with so much charm! And take us on such tours of her Texas life! Thank you so much for helping me tonight, with my mourning! I love you guys already!

I saw The Kennedys, Roseanne Cash & Nanci at the John Stewart Birchmere tribute circa 2001. The 3 ladies danced together on the side of the stage. I was in the second row on the side of the stage sitting behind Chuck McDermott and family.

Stu, we're lucky that there are so many live videos of Nanci. We played with her so many times, and I recall standing to her right in the early days of the Blue Moon Orchestra, back when we were a 9-piece band, and then to her left from 2010 onward when it was just four of us on stage, but always thinking how lucky I was to be able to sing with Nanci, thinking, "I need to always remember this moment." - MK

I'm sorry for your loss. But ironically, contra the last line in No Expectations, her music isn't gone. Your heart-felt performance has passed it on. There's a story about Chuang Tzu that always helps me. His wife just died. When his friend visits, he finds him banging on a tub and singing. Why aren't you sad, he asks. Chuang Tzu said he was sad at first. But then he realized that if his wife had never been born, he would never have known her. And that everything that comes into being passes out of being. So he stopped being sad and began to sing. Thank you for singing through your pain and allowing us to hear her beautiful music.

This is the most loving tribute I can imagine for her. I thank you as others are thanking you. The music you make is great here and upholds us. Her passing was monumental news for us, and she was so mingled into my soul. I grew up in Texas, and am a musician, and moved north and always longed for this music. In Chicago I saw her twice. I wonder if you were performing with her!? This was prior to Other Voices. Thank you again for this beautiful tribute. We kiss Nanci to the sky.

Hi, Mark, I (Maura) joined the band in the middle of the Other Voices, Other Rooms tour - the tail end of the US tour, and all of the European tour. Pete joined a year earlier during the Late Night Grande Hotel tour in 1992. His first time playing with her was that now-famous Austin City Limits show with Nanci, the Indigo Girls, Julie Gold, and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. Pete had been on tour with Mary-Chapin, and this was her last gig of the tour. As it turned out, it was also his first gig with Nanci, and it turned into a life-long collaboration and friendship. Was this around the time you saw her in Chicago? - MK

It has been a very long summer of loss indeed. I had always had hope that we'd emerge from the pandemic and find all our friends and family still standing. My Dad was a big fan of Nanci's. He was so thrilled when I got to go on tour with her back in '93. I still recall his reaction when I told him over the phone, "Dad...I got the gig!" His reply was a joyful repeat, "Oh! You GOT the GIG!!" Nanci touched so many people in so many ways. -MK

Thank You Kennedy, a fitting tribute to the music of Nanci. It got me thinking, that through her music(I must have been a 20s something, I live in the UK), I discovered so many artists Nanci might mention, or by myself as the years went on. Creating a spark in others, what a wonderful thing to be able to do. I of course didn't know her, but Nanci always came across in interviews and from the stage, as a decent and good person. I am sure her music will live on for many generations to come, she will be sorely missed.
