Remembering Indigenous Actress Sacheen Littlefeather, Who Was Mocked & Threatened at Oscars in 1973

On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we remember the Indigenous actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather, who died last week at the age of 75, not long after she received an apology 50 years after she spoke at the Oscars in protest of Hollywood's portrayal of Native Americans. In 1973, she accepted an Oscar on behalf of Marlon Brando, who boycotted the ceremony, only to face boos from the crowd, threats of physical violence from the actor John Wayne and mocking by Clint Eastwood. The speech derailed her acting career, but she never stopped speaking out. "It was critical for the psyche of all our relations to bring awareness to and interrupt the negative interpretation and representation of Native American people by the film television and sports industries," said Littlefeather, reflecting on her speech at the Oscars in September, just three weeks before her death.

Funny how given enough time, people and positions which were once unpopular are eventually proven to be true and people who were once popular are shown up as the racist garbage that they were and are. I think it was Martin Luther King who once said that the moral arc of the universe bends towards justice and this proves it. Sacheen Littlefeather deserves every apology and then some from AMPAS. and AMPAS needs to disavow some of their star members who have shown themselves to be the bigots that they were and are. It's not just John Wayne who was problematic, but a whole bunch of actors, directors, producers from the 1930's-80's many of whom we consider as "legends" when really they were nothing to write home about. People like James Stewart, Spencer Tracy, Clarke Gable, Maureen O'Hara etc.

It still makes me laugh when white people think that they were the cowboys. They were rarely any Cowboys who were white. Why do you think they eat beans, they were primarily Mexican, native American and blacks or African Americans. Neither the mexican, native American nor the African American to get jobs in stores or in the bank or at the funeral homes or anywhere. They were the cowboys. There were some white guys who would become Cowboys because they were ostracized by the town. But you always see the Chuck wagon and the Cowboys eating beans that's because they weren't white. But if you look at American movies every single cowboy was white. And every single white person had a job in the town. It erases all the Mexicans who were here before them, all the native Americans who were here before them, and all the African-American slaves who weren't going to Canada, they were going to the West. We went to war with Mexico to try to get some of the slaves back during the Texas war. And Mexico would rather give up its land than give up the runaway slaves. For every one slave that made it to Canada, it's estimated as many as 7,800 to 10,000 made it to Mexico, or back then to Texas which was part of Mexico. When Mexico lost Texas and much of the Southwest went to United States you see many Africans running to the Caribbeans, Latin America, etc free Mexico might give them back to the United States rather than lose that land.

Well, I disagree with "beans", Cowboys had no refrigerators, meat would spoil. But another reason Cowboys "weren't White" is because while the portrayal of the American Cowboy was romantic, the reality was anything but. Cowboys were either driving cattle to new grazing territory or to Market and much of their life was living in the elements : Hot or cold, dry or wet. It didn't pay well and it didn't change much.

You made some good points. However, most of your comments are inaccurate, flawed and concocted narratives. Let's be reminded that there were no cows/ cattle, no horses (a prehistoric horse became extinct in Western Hemisphere about 12-16,000 years ago), no sheep, no goats, no chickens, and other ' so called farm animals' in North and South America before the Spanish and Portuguese (Europeans) arrived. (North & South America had plenty other mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, plants, etc .... for millenniums to millions of years. They eventually nurtured the Indijinos peoples who migrated to Western Hemisphere from Asia some 10-16,000 years ago during retreating Ice-Age.) Back to cowboys, cowboys is the anglicised Spanish word vaqueros out of Latin vacca -cow. It's well known that the Spanish brought horses, cows, sheep, and garden plants such as beans, lentils, etc to Mexico -and what we now call California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Texas, Florida- they are Spanish & Indijinos names, and also to Central America, South America. And much later so did the French, English, Dutch and other Europeans. related: The Indijnos cultivated maize, tomatoes, chili, cocoa, and other plants new the the Spanish. And vice-verso so were the Spanish (European) imports i.e., beans, lentils, etc all new to the Indijinos. There was gradual merging of many things. The vaquero/ cowboy and horse as it relates to Western Hemisphere is basically a Spanish & Portuguese (European) import. Decades after the horse & other 'domesticated' farm animals were brought by Spanish & Portuguese to Western Hemisphere some Indijnos gradually adopted and embraced horses, cows... as part of their culture. For simplicity the Spanish & Indijinos are the origin of vaqueros/ cowboys in North America. Long before other Europeans, and sub-Sahara Africans arrived in Western Hemisphere. The foregoing happened long before the 13 ++ British Colonies, French Canada, and the more recent 250 years and set-up of US & CAN. As to the TV, films, and stories they are often used to establish a cultural, regional, national identity myths they draw selected bits and omissions from historical facts, use of novels, etc and through wide repeated distribution 'educate' public into mindsets. Often misleading away from facts and so to sell ideas, films, products, ... So, now hopefully you know more and far more factual origin and profusion of vaqueros/ cowboys.

@@thevision4734 Please learn about origins of dried beans, and rice. FYI the rice we know being popular today was not the rice of 500 years ago and later. Beans were brought to Western Hemisphere by the Spanish, so was the variants of modern rice available today. Dried beans require particular processing, storage methods to keep bugs out. Similarly, does dried rice. As to frying beans and rice they first require hydration then boiling to soften then colling to eliminate moisture before frying in oil. Oils were very scarce in past, oils from maize, animal fats were precious and difficult to carry about for they became stale or rancid, or leaked out of containers. So please learn facts so to avoid misleading yourself and others.

I first saw a clip of her doing the famous speech in a music video by the Hallucination. Even in that short clip her presence was so strong. She was an amazing woman.

@Louise E. she's not NA. Mexican American. Her father was born in Oxnard, CA. He was an abusive alcoholic. She lied about her poverty and entire life. Her few movie roles pick up after the Oscars. She played NA woman who got gang raped & beaten to death. A hooker in an Italian flim, a hooker in a gangster film. The buckskin dress was borrowed, and Plains tribe not traditional Apache or hairstyle. Right from Central casting
