Remembering fearless Hawaiian activist Haunani-Kay Trask

The Pacific and the world are mourning the loss of Hawaiian scholar and activist Haunani-Kay Trask, who died at the weekend aged 71.
In 1991 Tagata Pasifika had the privilege of interviewing Professor Trask for the documentary The Hawaiians. Trask, a fearless advocate for the Kānaka Maoli, spoke passionately about Native Hawaiian rights and indigenous sovereignty.
"As far as I'm concerned, I'm a patriot of the Hawaiian nation. The Hawaiian nation burns in our hearts. It's still alive. It's right here on my land."
Our alofa to Haunani-Kay Trask's family, friends and the Hawaiian community.
Dr Haunani-Kay Trask 03 October 1949 - 03 July 2021

What a beautiful woman. I just got back from Hawaii and have decided to do some research after seeing how the natives live. I am a Native from California and was appalled at how the local and federal government lets their natives live. They don’t have roll numbers to receive aid or even reservations for affordable housing. They don’t have native healthcare like we have Indian health. Everyone was ooing and awing and I was pissed looking at one of most beautiful places on earth because I knew it wasn’t right. The people were absolutely gorgeous and had hearts of gold but I saw their pain and struggle like they were a brother or sister of mine because I too know the frustration as a native. I asked one of the Native tour guides how the housing was for natives and said people wait their whole lives of 60+ years to get Into the affordable housing set aside for native Hawaiians. It’s ridiculous and the fact that this video which was filmed in the 90’s is still very much valid up to what I saw this past week.

I remember watching an interview with her bumming out a white American woman live on national television having an argument about Native Hawaiian rights, and the woman arguing with her was put in her place with truth, and the whole studio went quiet. Then year's later was turned into a meme and went viral on the internet. 😂🤣. And it's now circulating on Tik Tok. A voice for the people!!!! R.I.P beautiful lady. ❤️❤️❤️🌺💐🥀🌺

The white lady caller asked why Japanese weren’t blamed as much as white people. Trask lied and said she did then quickly shifted the topic to how white Americans stole Hawaii. She conveniently left out the bribes that Hawaiians in power received from selling off Hawaii. Is she mad at royal Hawaiian for selling it off? Naaa she blames Jack and Suzie from Nebraska on their anniversary vacation.

She was one of the first Hawaiian "patriots" I learned about along with Bumpy Kanahele. As I studied more Hawaiian history, I learned that the Queen had circulated petitions for a new constitution to the other islands and those had been "lost" with I believe 22,000signatures of approval. I also learned that there has never been a Treaty of Annexation signed turning Hawaii over to the US. I also learned that England, France and several other sovereign nations had signed treaties with Hawaii acknowledging Hawaii's existence as a sovereign nation in 1849.

My grandmother was full Hawaiian. She was a war bride in the 50's and relocated to Missouri. Her sisters and parents remained in Sprecklesville and Paia until the ends of their lives. I watch from afar as my aunties and uncles pass away and the kids don't remember the ALOHA that we were all shown. My Mother and her brother and sister remain on the list for Hawaiian Homelands program. We have land in Lahaina that my great grandmother fought for and we still pay taxes on squatted by family and strangers alike. Haunani was my Malcolm and my Bobby Seale and my Huey. FYI, Brett Kavanaugh wrote an amicus brief against Hawaiians being considered natives and given tribal status. I hope to see some measure of reparations given to MY people before I die.
