Tribute Vault has received the sad news that pop legend Paul Spencer, best known as Dario G, passed away at age 53. Paul, a member of the English dance music trio Dario G, was renowned for their 1997 hit "Sunchyme." He lost his battle with stage 4 rectal cancer, as announced on Monday, June 18th. Tributes have been pouring in for the 90s star.
A statement on his Instagram account read:
"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Paul Spencer earlier today. He was positive until the end, but this was one battle he could not fight anymore. He leaves behind a wonderful musical legacy and many happy memories for many people. He will be sadly missed by everyone who loved him. Shine bright our big star - K, A & H xxx."
Paul Spencer revealed his diagnosis with rectal cancer to his followers last year. Posting an image from a recent performance, he wrote:
"Hard to write this. I've just found out that I've got stage 4 rectal cancer and a shadow on my liver. That's damn hard to read too, I'm sure. Gonna give it my best shot though. Stay positive, 'cos I am. Always. Seeing the doctors on Friday to discuss the next steps."
Paul continued to document his journey on X (formerly Twitter), sharing health updates with his fans until his death was announced on Monday.

In April, Paul provided another health update, writing:
"I’m a fighter but wow this is a fight. I’d appreciate your love, prayers, healing energy & vibes. A cure would be pretty useful too :) Currently in hospital for acute pain. Radiotherapy next week. Looking to future therapies too. Thank you all. Happy thoughts only please. Happy."
In his final Instagram post, just weeks before his passing, Paul vowed to defeat his cancer. He shared a snap from his hospital bed and wrote:
"I’m Out Out! At last. Has anything of interest happened in the outside world from the past month? I know you’ve all been showing overwhelming support, love, and strength for me. And countless others like me. I hope and pray everyone gets their best opportunity. Thank you. I'm infection-free now but feel I already have the energy to defeat this fully with the next stages, even though a little rest and recoup time might, appreciated."
The Dario G trio had hits like "Sunchyme" and "Carnaval de Paris," the latter of which reached number five on the charts in 1997 and became the official song of the 1998 FIFA World Cup held in France. Fans are revisiting his songs to honor Paul Spencer, with one social media user commenting on his "Carnaval de Paris" video: "R.I.P Dario G. They should play this at the Euros in his memory."
