In 1985 I traveled to Honolulu for business. I was seated in first class in a 747 which then was the "upstairs" seats. It later became the lounge for first class. A flight attendant came me that a celebrity was going to sit next to me. They tactfully told me he likes to be left alone. I knew Jim Nabors lived in Hawaii but still surprised. He said hello and then went to sleep for about 5 hours out of the 8 hour flight. When he woke he asked me where I was from (Austin Tx) and proceeded to talk until we landed, mostly asking questions about my occupation. Very sincere, nice man.

He's the definition of how a celebrity suppose to act with his fans. He appreciated everything he got and he knew it was his fans that got him there. He never turned into a D-Bag like a lot of these so call celebrity. I know people that ran into him and just said hi. He would spend a few minutes just talking to them. It meant ta lot to them, but it's just 60 seconds out of his day. He's was a good person. RIP Jim, we need more like you!

No judgement here. How wonderful it must have been for him to have someone to grow old with. A true companion, a friend, a partner in all of life. It's a rare and beautiful thing. Some of us don't have that and some of us never will. Good for you ,Jim. Thank you for sharing your untouchable talent with us. You are tremendously appreciated.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Nabors when he was in Melbourne Australia in the late 70s. he performed on the Don Lane show the best ever Live to air Australian evening talk show. each week Don would have different Hollywood guest on the show On the night i were a audience member. That night as Jim was leaving the studio i went to the front security gate and i saw him coming out i yelled out Mr Nabors may i have your Autograph please . He came right over outside the gates and gladly gave me his Autograph i also told him my Dad Mum and I never missed a episode of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C replays too in which we did I remember him on the Andy Griffith show but was a little young to see them all. I had to ask him if he could do the Gomer Pyle Golly voice Anyway He said he couldn't do it and all of a sudden he did it. and we both laughed. such a lovely humble man a gentleman i will always have that memory until the day i die R.I.P May you rest in peace Mr NABORS

Years back when Jim was in Flint Michigan doing a show with Florence Henderson I had the greatest lunch with him quite by accident. We were ordering lunch and he asked what I thought was good. He was charming and just like your neighbor next door. It was like you saw him every day and were just saying "hey" at your mailbox.

what a guy. I was a singer , actor and teacher in Hawaii 20 years ago and got to meet him at a party. In Oct 1987 just weeks before his death , while on vacation in Hawaii ( now living in Japan) I had a chance to see Jim outside the Diamond head theatre after the final show of "Rag Time". Proud to say , I think I got the final photo of Jim before his passing . He was in a wheel chair but was glad to let me take a photo with him......classy man . On a sad note the "Enquirer" magazine offered me only 500 dollars for the photo rights because "he is just not that big of a name"......I declined. Jim will always big a part of American like me. In fact before going to the theatre , Jim was on my rooms TV doing Gomer for millions to watch!!

R I P Mr. Nabors He was a very sweet, kind person with a most powerful singing voice, just incredible. Met him at charity events where he donated to. He was just as sweet and humble as Gomer, very gracious and down to Earth. I still listen to his XTmas music each year still. My Family used to collect all his many record albums whereon he did wonderful cover songs of the popular hits of the day. His songs of inspiration are also powerful and makes one want to get up out of their chair. He will be missed by many.

The shows now...cynical, lowbrow. Are they even supposed to be funny? The music to 'Modern Family' grates. Manny is fun, the gay couple have their moments, but the Sofia Vergara plotline rankles. The married couple & their daughters add zilch. '2 Broke Girls', the blonde doesn't learn or grow, is unfunny.

Back in the late 1970’s I was a pilot for the Hawaiian Holiday Macadamia Nut Company. The owner and his family were good friends of Jim Nabors. Jim had a home near Hana on Maui and we would fly him there and back to Honolulu all the time. He was always friendly and you could tell that he was sincere in all that he said and did. My father in law who lived in Coleman, SD. was a true fan of Jim’s and my wife had kinda bragged that I knew Jim. Now I didn’t know all this was going on but my wife says “Honey, Jim Nabors is playing in Sioux Falls, SD. next month and my dad is hoping you can get him and Helen some tickets because there all sold out?” Well I loved my wife and my father in law did not really even like me. So...I said sure sweetie I will talk to Jim next week and see what I can do. I’m worried because if Jim says “No” what am I going to say to my wife and I know what my father in law is going to say about me. That phony BIG SHOT is just an asshole. Whew.... I was 25yo it was my first real corporate flying job and I lived in Hawaii and I was married to a beautiful blue eyed blond with large upswept breasts. Could life get any better? No, no fucking way. So I had to accept the mission. The pickup was in Honolulu, 2 pax, drop in Hana. Jim plus guest. We depart Honolulu for the 35 minute flight to Hana and it was a typical beautiful day in the islands with clear sky’s and beautiful scenery. We fly over Moloka’i towards the north shore of Maui. I’m thinking I wonder what my HS buddies are doing now? Are they working in the mental hospital that employed all of our fathers? An Irish and black town for 3 generations. A NY town of drunks and bigots that never learned a thing after graduation day. But there I was lined up to land at Hana and wondering how I could ask Jim to help my father in law get tickets to the show in South Dakota. I made a greaser landing...slicked it in there. You could not tell that I actually touched down. The tires kinda melted on to the runway. I taxi on to the ramp and shutdown. All doors opened and Jim walks away from the aircraft towards the terminal. I jump out and kinda give chase but not to be obvious. He enters the MensRoom and I follow. Damn..I should not be doing this I think. But I keep going. Into the bathroom I say “Hey Jim, My father in law is a big fan of yours and I was wondering if you could help him and his wife in Souix Falls next week get tickets because you’re sold out? This is at the urinals. Mark you tell him that I will get him and your mother in law in with the best seats in the house. He gives me the details for the WillCall window and I leave the bathroom with a hasty retreat to the aircraft. I tell my father in law to go to will call window say Mark the Pilot told me to come to this window. They get a lot Personal Escort to their seats and invite to backstage for the encore and a personal greeting by Jim to them after the show. WoW..... I think my father in law finally said something nice to me. Thank you Jim you were truly a great guy and the New Years Eve 1979-1980 at your home in Black Point was great and thank you for the invite.” Mark the Pilot

Jim Nabors, a comic actor who found fame in the role of the amiable bumpkin Gomer Pyle in two hit television shows of the 1960s while pursuing a second career as a popular singer with a booming baritone voice, died on Thursday at his home in Honolulu. He was 87. His husband, Stan Cadwallader, confirmed the death. He said that Mr. Nabors’s health had been declining for a year and that his immune system had been suppressed since he underwent a liver transplant in 1994. At the time, Mr. Nabors announced that he had contracted hepatitis B in India several years earlier when he cut himself shaving with a contaminated straight razor, which he had bought there.
