Rembrandt's portrait of his wife Saskia goes on tour | National Gallery
Rembrandt’s 'Saskia van Uylenburgh in Arcadian Costume' is travelling the UK in 2022 and 2023 as part of our Masterpiece tour. Ed, one of our Educators, and Laura, our Associate Curator of Renaissance Painting, explore the stories surrounding this portrait of Rembrandt's wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh.
The National Gallery Masterpiece Tour 2021-23 offers three non-London museums, galleries or art centres the opportunity to partner with the National Gallery for three years and to display one different major work from our collection each year.

My eye is drawn to her belly. I think that is what Rembrandt was making the focus. Spring, new life. It was her first pregnancy so the couple were probably very excited at the time.
I had a friend named Saskia back in college. Her father was a painter of some importance, but I was only peripherally interested in art at that time, so I didn't get the connection. The striking thing is how much she actually resembles this Saskia. She really was quite lovely. It's a beautiful work, and I think what makes it beautiful, is that it is you can really see how much he loves his subject. Very touching.
I love the piano that plays at the start.♥️ 🎹 🌟 I love Rembrandt. ❤ 🖼 I love art. ❤ 🖼 I love his name.❤
What a wonderful conversation!
He truly could make the figures of his portraits come alive.
Rembrandt seems to venerate his wife so much that shows even a kind of obsession for her. Thanks for the video.
Great to have so much information about Saskia! Or Flora, on this First Day of Spring we are celebrating...
Rembrandt: The master of light. 💫 👽 💫
Oh! goodness..Rembrandt's Painting of Flora and Springtime is so,so captivating..wonderfully beautiful..It is a shame we get only a short glimpse.
Now an opportunity to see this painting in the Beacon museum in Whitehaven till January 2023
Beautiful painting on many levels. QUESTION: When was this painting last cleaned? It has such a warm glow. It melds Saskia's hair and garments into a harmonious blend. The effect is peace. You might call it "Rembrandt lighting." Yet, we now know that so much of the warm glow of old paintings is due to aged varnish and dirt. Saskia's skin looks yellow. It was probably luminous white.
Rembrandt's Portraits seem to be worth looking at that is for sure.
Wonderful picture and discussion.
That’s a beautiful name
Always wondered about the gingers all over The Netherlands. The genetics of that. It's kind of a national characteristic. Remember Van Gogh. Rembrandt's house has been amazingly restored. Not to miss if you go there. But his greatest panting, The Night Watch, is in the National Musemn in Amsterdam. It's enormous maybe 14 feet by 12 feet. The first thing you see when you walk in. My friend, a painter had to leave the gallery for 30 minutes she was so stunned.
Very sensitive and informative video. Thank you.
it's a beautiful painting to see in person. thank you for having proper captions on this video.
Adoro Rembrandt l'opera stupenda è quella La scritta sul muro del re Baldassarre.

Wonderful and so informative. Thank you 🤗👋
This is so awesome to be able to see these paintings I could never see… Rembrandt was such a magnificent painter. Thank you for making this possible to see…! ❤❤❤
Let’s remember that also Rembrandt van Rijn was a poor painter, he was a long time financially supported by a art lover, when this support stopped all his property came under the hammer, shortly after that he died in poverty !
Gracias.
❤❤❤❤
I see were still skirting around saying that hes obviously painting his glowing PREGNANT wife. I used to believe that stuff i was told about there not being painted pregnant women, and they were just showing off their fabric and even if they had been pregnant it would never have been painted in. But then historians still refer to Achilles and patrocolus as "friends" and if 2 women spent 20 years single, sharing a flat with only 1 bedroom, its just because they were just such good "friends". And Achilles and patrocolus were canonically and explicitly lovers at that. So yeah, i like that she at least alluded to it being around the time they had their first child and fertility, but still some ways to go apparently.
💖

Which artist in modern times do we have who can match the Old Masters of painting like Rembrandt, Caravaggio, DaVinci, Bruegel, Durer and Velasquez? The answer: Zero, no one.

Rembrandt's portrait of his wife Saskia goes on tour | National Gallery 1837pm 14.3.22 owned by me? thanx. carry on...
I’m quite surprised by how much flesh is revealed in this painting. Would this have been normal during this period?
He could have differed her appearance due to his growing love…
They are pregnant....really! She is pregnant, they are going to be parents.
