Reloading the 450 Bushmaster Lee dies 225gr ftx bullets

Just showing an overview of what I've been using to load for the 450 Bushmaster. The new Lee dies are great and showing what components I've used with success to get good accuracy. The 225 gr ftx bullets have been a great bullet to use for reloading and hopefully you will find this helpful if you start to reload the 450 Bushmaster. Thanks for watching and subscribe. Good video, you sound like a pretty knowledgeable guy and I am also a big fan of the 450. I have one in an AR platform and I just built a bolt gun on a Savage action. I started by loading the 240gr XTP magnum and then went to the 250gr XTP. All worked good but 2 years ago I also gave the 225gr FTX a try with a reduced load of IMR 4227. That is my pet load, much less recoil, one hole MOA accuracy and DRT performance on Whitetails. Hornady has load data for the 240 in their manual and you can back off from there to 454 Casull loads with the 4227 if you want or anywhere in between. At 1870fps with 225 I killed a big doe at roughly 120 yards, just buckled her knees. I don't know if you realize it but the 450 Bushmaster headspaces on the case mouth and with the roll crimp your head space is off, the extractor is holding the case in place when firing. You will get better accuracy with a taper crimp off the channelure or use a bullet without one and it will be safer. I bought a bunch of 200gr FTX blems from Midway for $8/50 and load them with greatly reduced charges of AA5744 to around 1250 fps for plinking or small game like a heavy 45 Colt load, just over $11/50 and a bunch of fun. Single shot in a AR but tons of fun in the Savage.

I don't get why people change what the engineers at the ammo companies do. Just copy what they sell in terms of where to crimp a bullet etc. When i here stuff like head space is off that sounds like possible issues down the road. I would like to know the what happens if: 1. You load the bullet just barely in the case (making it longer) 2. Load same bullet extra deep 3. Load bullet same as factory. Whats the differences in performance, etc in those three?

I switched to these bullets after shooting a few whitetails with the 250s and not being happy with the wounds i saw, they dont expand much and the deer ran 60+ yards. These 225 ftx bullets however, going 2250fps or so.... im on a three deer streak of drop in its tracks performance. Shots ranging from 100 to 130 yards. Very impressive.

  • @Physics072

Bullets don't drop a deer in its tracks its placement. I've shot them right through the hear and they still run 60-80 yards. If you spine them with any bullet they will drop. The 250ftx is not that bad it does tend to explode a little if you hit bone leaving shrapnel. But it does dump all its energy in the animal. I like the copper bullets so if I hit near the heart its not full of lead shrapnel. For target shooting the ones in this video are hard to beat price wise and they will bring a dear down too. I just started reloading my 450 today had to get kit for my Dillon XL650. Starting out with 39, 40 and 41gr of H110. This is for BOLT guns not AR. Bolts are based on .308 and can handle much higher pressures. 38,000 for AR and 62,000 psi for .308 based 450s. So don't expect to see pressure signs at AR loads you wont.

@@Physics072 The shots i speak of are all perfect broadside, behind the shoulder, double lung, consistently. I grew up using a .270 win to kill deer, with 130gr bullets coming out of the muzzle at 3100 fps, ive had deer run 70 yards or more with no heart at all with that load, however, it has put more down where they stood than have ever ran. With an advertised muzzle velocity of 2200, the 250gr in the .450 lacks the "hydro-shock" effect out beyond 150yds, however, those 225gr ftx still expand very well at 180yds, and last november i shot the biggest whitetail of my life, well over 200lbs, at 20yds, square in the shoulder, he got up, ran 15yds, dropped dead, the 225gr ftx was under the hide on the off side, ALL energy expended. Surely that shot with a .22lr vs a howitzer, which one may drop in its tracks, which one most likely will run? When a bullet leaves an exit wound, it still had some energy to spend beyond the animal. Placement is a huge factor, but so is velocity, and animal toughness. The .450 BM was not based on the .308. Just hold the cases next to each other and you can see that. It was based on the .284 winchester, a bottle neck round designed for use in semi autos. I run a bolt gun too.

@@fruitfarmfords8243 Hi Buck, sorry I did not mean it was based off the .308 saying bolt 450s like the Ruger Gunsite scout are built around their .308 guns converted to 450 so they are able to handle much higher pressures than non bolt actions (ARs) I go for the double lung, I like to track them, maybe its weird but thats the fun part for me. And yea much energy is wasted on full pass throughs but so is meat. i love the heart. I hit one with a lead FTX there and blew it up and no blood trail and jelly heart full of lead shrapnel. Hit another at 200 in shoulder blade (no pass and no blood, he ran into hidden area 80+ yards through a swamp and took me long time to find him. (no blood) After that I decided to give higher velocity coppers a try. Hit one in the heart full pass-though good blood (and tracking!) he only ran 50 yards into woods. But heart was mmm good (no shrapnel) I know lots of guys that like to drop them (spine shots) for me it takes 1/2 the fun out of the journey. Wish I could use a .270 around here, we can't. Use to be shotgun only so for us the 450 BM is a huge step up. With the newer Bear Creek high BC (.265) it extends the range about 100 yards past the current hornady. And the win drift is almost 2x better. Only really matters past 200 yards.

  • @fruitfarmfords8243

@@Physics072 I like heart too, i dont mind tracking myself, but where i hunt with the .450 is small parcels of private property, if the deer goes 100 yards a certain way, its on the neighbors land. I must travel nearly 3 hours north to use my real rifles, damn caliber restrictions. Where im restricted to straight wall and shotgun (southern michigan) the spot i hunt has less density of people nearby than where i hunt in the real rifle zone. @@fruitfarmfords8243 LOL funny but its true on the tire analogy. Yea I would have to change some things If I had to worry about it running 80 yards. I doubt I'd take 200 yard shots if going for high shoulder/spine type shots.

This video inspired me to make a video tonight. I developed a super cheap (32 cents if you use your brass) accurate load for the Bushmaster. 15 cent bullet, 3 cent primer and 14 cents powder! found a guy who made a similar load with Everglades 45 230grain jhp. I used to buy everglades until I found Zero bullets at Rose Distribution. They are better and cheaper. under 15 cents. true jackets not plated. I shot 5 after deep cleaning my barrel with Sweets 7.62. just ran more Sweets through after 5 shots with minimum blue patches. the target had round holes and no keyholes under 1" at 50 yards group of 5. just an FYI if anyones interested. I will make a video. OAL is to be 2.060" 37 grains lil' gun. use CCI 400 OR HOTTER primer. Also if you find the write up for the everglades he did not know what COAL to use and his rounds wouldnt feed reliably. update I have now shot 10 rounds of this. no feeding issues with standard 556 magpul 30 round magazine.
