Right now, any team would pay a hefty price to have Bryce Harper on their roster for the future. But back in 2019 at the end of his free agency frenzy, only ONE team was willing to meet his demands.

As a Phillies fan, we LOVE this guy! He embodies what Philly is and just gets the city. The thing that solidified it for me was when he first signed in 2019 and was in a HUGE slump. He had just struck out like 4-5 times and was booed by Philly. When talking to the reporters after the game, he said "yeah, I'd boo me too. I need to be better." Didn't make any excuses and no bullshit. He cares as much as we do and plays every play like its his last. We love him and are so happy to have him be the face of the franchise.

the universal DH change in the NL could also be big for his longevity, since if he does start to lose some ability in fielding, he can move over to the DH for the rest of his career and probably excel there
The excitement here in Philly when he signed was one of the most memorable times as a fan. Hope we can get him a championship.

Weird "Altuve isn't worth his paycheck" narrative appeared this season. Altuve's 2022 wRC+ was just 6 points below Harper's 2021 MVP season. If anything, Harper is underpaid and Altuve is appropriately paid.
The Tigers aren’t paying Miggy for 3 more years. He has 1 more year on his contract, but if he finishes top 10 in MVP voting, the next 2 years vest. That ain’t happening

I'm a Yankee fan and I will never let go of the fact that Bryce was begging on his knees to be a yankee and Brian cashman said "nah we have Aaron hicks and Brett Gardner"
As a Giants fan, I already relive this every offseason
This video is awesome man
Seeing Cashman say Harper wasn’t a fit when the Yankees went into 2023 without a left fielder is so funny to me
As a Phillies fan, nearly all of the 2018 season was a debate between paying Machado or Harper. Machado had some red flag concerns with fans (ie cleating other players) that really kept ownership from going all in on him. Plus the team had a lot of IF prospects and not nearly enough OF prospects. We weren’t really sold on Harper either, with the whole crybaby/primadonna national view on him. But when he won the HR Derby in Nationals Park I fell in love. The guy is living up to all the hype and Philly is his.
absolutely loved this video as a career Bryce harper fan (also as a Phillies fan 💆♂)
I'll never forget this day. The same day I got accepted into medical school, the Phillies signed Harper.
I wanted harper in philly so bad its nice to look back and see how things worked out and how loved he is here and loves it here
I remember the day he signed in Philly perfectly. I gave up on hope that he was going to Philadelphia, I thought he was going to LA or San Francisco. I was entering the front door of my dad’s house with my brother and I got the notification that he signed with the Phillies. Called my dad to let him know about our school days and how Bryce Harper signed with the Phillies. Meanwhile someone was calling him from work to also let him know that Harper signed with the Phillies at the same time, but I beat the guy to it.
At some point he needs a ring.

Bryce's contract is such a bargain
That Harper deal looks like a steal no6
Harper will forever go down as the biggest miss for Cashman. He was practically begging to be a Yankee and Cashman didn’t even give him an offer
This opens a whole new discussion of "Can you both yell at owners to stop being cheap with their players, then ALSO get mad when they pay players for past performances rather than future potential?" I think a lot of us do, and it isn't necessarily correct.
Worth every penny.
As a Jays fan, I loved Marcus Semien... but he signed his deal at 31... gonna be interesting to see how that contract goes
my favorite fan interaction ever is when Harper is coming back from a strikeout and some fan says "330 million, 0 for 3" fucking gets me to this day
So frustrating being a White Sox fan. There is a joke that we always "have a seat at the table" but it's just empty fan service to show we are "trying" to land big free agents but never actually do what it takes to land them. Grandal and Hendrix were pleasant surprises, with Grandal being the largest free agent contract we've given out. But Grandal is already slowly deteriorating and neither of those players are on the level of Machado or Harper.

Add the Bulls to that list, with Reinsdorf being the common denominator.
Speaking as a Mariners fan, we did just fine in the Cano deal. =D Thanks, Mets!
5:07 wait I'm confused. Are you a fan or expert 🤣🤣
From a Phillies fan, they won't be going back. Even assuming they make it back to the playoffs is highly optimistic. They will not win a WS.
I want to know what really happened with the Sox and Harper. We had boards up in the UC saying we signed him.
Brian Cashman didn’t even give him a meeting … but he got Josh Donaldson for 25 mil this year smh
Came up a little short this year
Didnt the Padres also try to make a play at him? I remember that the Padres owner tried to sign him after Machado but I guess the offer wasnt good enough

He's not underpaid. He asked for a longterm contract.
I’m shocked the Red Sox didn’t offer him a contract, outfield is our biggest need at the moment and I feel even if we had still traded mookie after the Bryce signing the Sox would be in a great place rather then where they are now

Classic White Sox
Come on man, miggy had a triple crown in one of those MVP seasons.
It will always make me sad as a cubs fan that bryce said he liked chicago and Kris Bryant confirmed he told him they where a top spot
Can't believe you didn't mention the Rays 1yr/$50m offer ._.
I can’t believe there are still people who think he’s a detriment to a team
Harper IS Philly. We all love him here and he puts in the work. He has the work ethic and discipline we appreciate here. He also changed our franchise and made us a perennial contender.
As a Padres fan, I would’ve much rather had Bryce on the team than Machado..
When I was looking something up on BBref about him, he won the MVP with a sub 6 bWAR in 2021??? That could be an interesting video, cause that can't happen often. Frankly that's...not enough.
Miggy isn't overpaid, everyone else is just underpaid. Miggy is a HOFer, he deserves 30 mil a year as long as he plays. He's earned that.
Jerry Reinsdorf will haunt my White Sox fandom forever - how do you not submit an offer to Harper? Reinsdorf is notorious for emphasizing fielding competitive teams without going all in for championships. All about business as opposed to winning. Without Michale Jordan falling into is lap, Jerry Reinsdorf would have 78 seasons to show between the Bulls and White Sox, with ONE championship. The White Sox alone have only 3 playoff game wins since 2005. The Southside deserves so much better 😔
Very triggering to see all those 10+ year contracts and yet no Devers 😢
Watching this now, it’s so funny to see that the Yankees didn’t think Harper would have been realistic at first base. And as a Phillies fan I’m happy they didn’t because that helped the Phillies get him instead.
This dude publicly said he wanted to be a Yankee and the Yankees front office said no thanks we have Clint Frazier

No, we had Stanton and his bloated contract. Prevented us from buying another outfielder.
i think another reason why he was so convinced by Philadelphia was because they were willing to listing to him and sign the players he recommended (Turner, Realmuto, Schwarber, Castellanos…)
I remain convinced the SF Giants fumbled this deal, due to an internal breakdown of communication. Zaidi was new, and the chain of command wasn't exactly worked out yet. The Giants hesitated, and lost.

The jury is still out on Zaidi. His first round pick in Patrick Bailey so far has been a bust. Yaz and Lamonte have really regressed compared to last year. And their mediocre season really calls into question who was really the coach last year - Kapler, or Buster Posey.

It was a dumb offseason where a lot of big markets were trying to get under the tax/ didn’t have a big need. Compare it to this offseason when the dodgers giants Mets and Yankees will all likely be spending big. The only reason the padres Phillies and whitesox were the lead for those two giant names was exactly that .. nobody else made serious offers

@@stujohn6569 For sure, and he probably would’ve made more money that way. But that wasn’t his priority. He said that he wanted a place he and his family could call home for the long term, and that seems to have been a sincere desire, given that he did want a no-trade clause, but didn’t want any opt-outs. Gotta respect that. (Side note: That’s what Nolan Arenado wanted too; it was the _Rockies_ that put the opt-out in his deal. Once he was traded to St. Louis, and seemed happy there, I knew he wouldn’t exercise it.)

The way his deal shook out in the 2019 off season always makes me wonder what would have happened had Steve Cohen bought the Mets a couple years sooner like originally expected. All the MLB free agents that got mega deals lately have Harper to thank because for a while they’re in the 2010s the mega deal players were turning into busts
It always kill me the the Orioles new Machado is coming along and yet they signed Chris Davis to that monster contract , especially since they knew about the Ritalin deferment and struggles he might have to endure to get back to the star he was. Obviously it's all okay now but at the time it seemed like same old Orioles, as I was still exceedingly angry that they traded Eddie Murray out of town back in the late eighties
My big takeaway from this is that the Angels make terrible financial decisions
Astros are champions of mlb baby
The White Sox offered Machado 10 years 250
Harper was really the missing piece to the Phillies. They had regressed so much, and except maybe Hoskins, they didnt have any big stars that were exciting. I mean sure they had some veterans like Santana and Arrietta and some young guys but they hadn't solidified their attempt to become a contender. Then they brought in Harper, and from there they were willing to spend to build up around that idea.
Altuve is not worth as much as Harper?

Looking at yearly and not total is a stupid way to evaluate a contract. Harper's deal might end up a good one for the phillies, but they have him until he's in his late 30's. These early years are SUPPOSED to be the good ones.
Crazy Harper is 29 and has 7-10 years of solid ball left if injury prevention and rehab keep up
