Religious Refugees Who Opposed Moscow and fled to Siberia. What happened to them?

Agafia Lykova is perhaps the most famous hermit living in the Siberian wilderness. Not everyone knows that she's a descendant of the Old Believers, Russian Orthodox Christians who fled to this frontier 300 years ago fearing repression and persecution from Moscow's official Church. Today, Old Believers are still found in secluded Siberian communities, where they maintain peculiar traditions inherited from their ancestors.

Old Believers live all over the world, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, including such places as Alaska, Canada and their adjoining islands, who came over there back several hundreds years when otter hunting for fur was a big thing. Also here in Lithuania we have their churches pretty much in every region and from what I remember there's no way to tell them apart from the traditional Orthodox churches when looking at them from the outside.

The first Russians I ever met were two young Old Believers from Oregon, brothers aged 21 and 18. Their family came from Sinkiang. We met in Washington state, where they led me into an Olympic Peninsula forest to a small, wooden shack. They hollered something in Russian, and out came two older men in suspenders and knee boots with beards down to their bellies. They were Russian tree thinners. They spoke not one word of English, but I got to know them through my young interpreters. Inside the cabin may as well have been in Siberia. Two beds and a barrel stove between them. No light but what came through the door. The men spoke to me of their glorious freedom in this new land. Later, outside, my friend showed me a pit he dug to keep the canned food and bottles of wine he paid the old men with. But they were free, and the nearest communists didn't know where to find them. Then I was treated to a demonstration of Russian skill at tree thinning. The old men donned their tin hats, fired up their chainsaws and tore into the forest like mad bulls. My friend told me they could work like that all day long. That was 45 years ago, and the two old men are now, probably, free indeed. My young interpreter would be about 70. I wonder what he's thinking today? I hadn't thought of this in many, many years. Thanks for the video, which brought it all back to me.

My mother was born in the same Chinese province (normally written as Xinjiang ) and was part of the exodus of Russians from China to Australia, while others - like those you met - moved to the USA. The Russians lived and worked along side the Uigur people who are now being persecuted by the Chinese Government. It is very likely our families knew each other. Although our family wasn't Old Believer (they were Pentecostal Christians), under the persecution of the Chinese Government it was necessary for all the Christians to help one another in order to survive.

Oh man, this is simply one of your best. I am Dutch, not Russian but especially the conversation with the couple in the house touched me. After you say that at the end of the day people are so alike where ever they live. And that is true. No matter where you live. We are all mostly the same. Same dreams, same wishes, same challenges. What I found striking is that I feel much the same about values as the couple in the house. Children are spoiled. People have become lazy. It is true. To my opinion, when we would talk with eachother and REALLY learn to get to know each other, there will be so much more respect. I could tell you so much about my personal experiences but this is a KZread comment. Not an essay about respect. So perhaps when we meet, whomever you are, where ever you are, we can discuss this topic. I am already looking forward. Meanwhile, open up to people, listen, understand, ask questions and stay safe.❤

Mолодец! You succeeded in your quest. It reminded me of a trek I made years ago to a beautiful Old Believer village in Alaska. It is in a gorgeous setting along Kachemak bay on Alaska's Kenai peninsula. The road did not go to the village - I had to park my car and hike. After reaching the main road, the villagers disappeared into their homes as I walked by. The village was very tidy and the women always had their heads covered. When I would encounter them outside of the village they would often wear beautifully made traditional clothing - both men and women. You might find it interesting to visit old Russian Orthodox churches elsewhere in Alaska. The parishoners are nearly all Alaska Natives. Hints of Russian heritage exist with some people's last names and words they adopted into the native languages. Can you guess what word they use for 'white man'? The first white men they met were cossacks. The Athabascan Indian word for 'white man' is 'gissuck'. The Yupik Eskimo word for white man is 'gussick'. Another one - Aleuts from the Aleutian Islands and the Alaska Peninsula - more of them have Russian last names than any other ethnic group. Their special ocean hunting boat is called a 'bidirka', yes - байдарка. And of course, every native language is Alaska has the same word for tea - чай. Keep up the great work - I am a rare American that has visited and worked in Russia and Siberia - awesome places!

They left Russia through China during the Bolshevik revolution. After years in China they booked passage to Brazil. From there groups moved to Oregon in the USA and others went to Uruguay. The Old Believers in Alaska are from the Oregon group - they moved to Alaska from Oregon in the 1960s. They settled in their own now thriving isolated villages similar to what you visited. A joint venture between the Kennedy Family and Tolstoy Foundation, offered Old Believers living in China, Brazil, and Turkey the opportunity to come to the USA in the 1960s. They were first settled in NJ then most moved to Oregon. As the community grew, they split into groups returning to Brazil, some going to Alaska near Cordova, and Alberta in Alaska. The epicenter for Old Believers is now Woodburn, Oregon. They number over 20,000. The schools have adapted to their liturgical calendar as have employers. They run berry farms, construction companies, and commercial fishing boats. In the 1980s, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia came to Woodburn to bow down to the Old Believer leaders and apologize for their mistreatment hundreds of years earlier. There have been quite a few books and documentaries made about them.

Yes, your videos are gems. I can imagine how difficult it is to make such a video, but the result is worth it. Russia is a beautiful country and Russians are wonderful people. I never believed I would write this, but as a Westerner I am fed up with our disgusting woke culture and I am not surprised that thousands of people from Western countries are fleeing to Russia (statistics can be looked up online) because they want to live a normal life. In the video we can see how both of you are polite and respectful to the villagers. I like it very much. This is one of my favorite channels on all of KZread and I am truly grateful for this channel. And not to forget, MISHA ROCKS!

Very interesting video, thanks! They remind me of the Hutterites we have here in Canada, who actually immigrated to North America from Russia. They are not Orthodox, but the women dress the same way and they are devout followers of their religion. And 30-40 years ago they stayed away from modern technology too, no radios, tv, etc. But the last few years they have started embracing it more, especially in the agriculture areas. In fact they are some of the biggest, most advanced farmers in the country now.

Until 1941, a lot of Germans lived in the Volga region and the Krasnodar Territory. But with the beginning of the war, they were forcibly deported to Altai and Kazakhstan. My mother-in-law is German. In 1941, her family was deported from the Krasnodar Territory to Kazakhstan. The train went through the endless steppes of Kazakhstan and stopped every 100 km to drop people from 2-3 wagons into the bare steppe. People lived in dugouts, food was brought to them once a month. After the first winter, they were reduced by half. Not many old people and children managed to survive until spring.
