The Japanese population is highly educated, hence less religious.

That’s irrelevant. Japanese people can be highly educated but it has no correlation with religion. Japan had a history of prosecuting religion or anything that stood against the government, Christianity was squashed and Shinto temples were burned. Japanese claim they are not religious in the concept that they don’t follow any organized group. Japanese tend to be very spiritual but that does not make them religious; in western terms you are religious only if you follow one of the religions and tend to practice it. For them it’s something alien but they believe in spirits in ghost.
