Religion as a mother - 60 Second Adventures in Religion (3/4)

Why do so many people picture God as a man? JJ Bachofen suggested there was once a time when it was the Goddess, not God that people turned to for religious guidance.

To be quite honest, he's the main reason I came to this channel. It was being played in my class, and I wanted to see if he did any more. Thanks

It's just so unusual to hear a concise piece of information that one might actually even want to hear another time, instead of trite repetetive dribble that's usually barraged at one during the day. Thanks!

Religions don't even need to have a concept of a deity in order to be one.

If you mean David Mitchell, yes. There are other videos in this series that do list his name in the title, not sure why this one doesn't. Edit: And here I am responding to a 10 year-old comment, that'll show me.

This video incorrectly states that widespread worship of female deities did not happen... and that's nonsense. While we can't know for sure about the entire world, many of the societies we can study today, of which we know a lot about -- for example, ancient Sumer, -- began with female deities or began with many deities, the most important of which was usually a female. And then over time those deities were supplanted by male ones in many parts of the world. They weren't strictly "maternal" either, and I feel that this video is highly reductive when describing them . . they had roles that covered pretty much all parts of society. You can find all of this information pretty easily, too. I recommend "Who Cooked Last Supper" because it's pretty clear and thorough.

As an atheist I don't picture god at all. But wiccans see god more as a feminine entity.

Actually that is speculation. The theory that those were goddesses has never been proven. It's a suggestion and it rests on the theory that ancient man surely would have seen mothers as God rather than another man - whch is wha the wideo showed

everyone should open their eyes and see the one true religion, Zoroasterianism. The great prophet zoroaster spoke of a uncreated god, which makes more sense than a male or female god!
