releasing tap and die holder

This is the releasing tap and die holder for my lathe. I set the shorter rod to the length I want my threads. When it pulls off the short pin I reverse the spindle and the holder comes around and contacts the longer pin and retracts.

This only works with an instantly reversing lathe drive system or a 3 phase motor I believe if you watch the chuck rotation in the video. A very ingenious mechanism nonetheless.

Yes you are right. Also I wouldn't want to do it this way at 300 rpm! My reflexes aren't that good anymore! 😁

MrJoeGarner Agreed. Simple to use for consistent length threads without carefully measuring for each one. It is anything but simple in construction.
