Release The Draguar! Building a Blown Jaguar Rat Rod - Roadkill Episode 7

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On this episode of Roadkill, Freiburger and Finnegan do unspeakable things to a '74 Jaguar XJ12, one of about 4,700 made. Namely, they cut a giant hole in the hood and install a Weiand 6-71 supercharger and twin Holley carburetors on the 350ci Chevy V8 that was already installed in the car when it was purchased for $1,000. But things can never be easy, so the supercharger installation is staged in the parking lot of Gotelli Speed Shop in South San Francisco. Then the duo hits the road, making their way to Sacramento Raceway, where they can finally unleash "The Draguar" at the strip.

I love that roadkill comes in every form. Trucks, muscle cars, hybrids, purpose built race cars, hacked together project cars... And I give far more credit to you guys accomplishing what you do in the middle of nowhere (half the time). I find it more entertaining when I don't know what will happen. Most car programs have a pristine and fully equipped garage and you KNOW they will succeed. This is automotive drama right here.

When it was recovered it was discovered that the thieves had pulled the oil pan drain plug and let the engine destroy itself.....Still a nice car....WITH A DESTROYED ENGINE. In my opinionthis is a great candidate for a engine upgrade. Darrel is open to offers. INTERESTED?

The V12 was probably removed because of cooling issues. The V12 produced so much heat that the jag engineers had to design a new cooling system and the battery had its own cooling fan to stop it catching fire. The reason so few were made was because it would fail in any climate that wasn't England. Jaguar tried to market these in the oil rich middle east it wasn't a success! The early models were overheating before they got off the docks. Jaguar did make improvements but the car had a reputation by then.

It has a Garrett GTS3582 turbo that makes 709 whp at 34 psi. I really do appreciate all builds and while you may not be into mine and I may not be into yours, I still have always wanted an old school 30s, 40s, 50s cruiser with a somewhat modern powerplant.

One of my all-time favorite dream builds is an old Packard V-12 with an Audi/Lamborghini 6.4L V-12 from a Murcielago, but more realistic would be a 50s Mercury lead sled slammed on the ground with the Mooneye hubcaps, a 6.2L supercharged Hellcat Hemi, and side pipes with glasspacks and the old school perforated heat shields like a Shelby Cobra or a C2 Corvette.

To the Brits here whining about putting an American V8 into a Jag, remember this: Carroll Shelby created the Cobra by dropping a small block Ford into a British A.C. Ace. Worked out pretty well, if you ask me! Also, even though this was originally a V-12 car, it was still a lowly 4-door, which is only a notch above a rusted-out minivan, no matter how few were made. Lastly, the XJ series Jaguars are quite possibly the most unreliable cars ever made. Did Lucas® (the manufacturer of most British automotive electrical components) make the electrical bits for Jaguar back then? If so, it's no wonder they were so troublesome. Joke of the day: Q - Why do the Brits drink warm beer? A - Because Lucas makes refrigerators, too.

I am a brit, I have no quibble with your statement. Yes in UK spec the V12 made around 300 horses, so not so different to the V8 blower motor. Thing is, the car was aready butchered, so at least it had a good run in it's old age. Yes the AC cobra was a hooligan tool, American muscle with British chassis, there were others too, Jensen Interceptor, original TVR Griffith, Sunbeam Tiger, Ford GT40 & a few more. Yes Jaguar were plagued with crappy Lucas electrics, one consolation was our Vauxhall (GM) cars had AC Delco & Fords had their own stuff.

Russ Cattell I'm happy enough to be able to say that I've owned a couple of Vauxhall V6 cars cavalier and Calibra that had a similar performance to this Jag with only 170bhp. But I've also jus t found out that the Jag V12 engine was a "sort of" flat head engine where the cylinder heads were completely flat and combustion took place in a cup in each piston crown.

Looking back... this is an XJ12L. That means it's the long wheelbase, with extra rear leg room, and is even more rare. Much, much less than 4700 were made. Probably closer to 700. Sad then, that this should be its fate. To be raped, thrashed and abused in this manner. A comfortable, world class super cruiser, turned annoying, worthless fart box. Only in America baby.

vivalaking But, when the V8 went in, given the stage of decay of both it and the interior, the car wouldn't have been that bad. The original V8 insertion was the point at which the car became a pile of shit. Even if you can't find a V12, a jaguar straight six is more than adequate for the job, and still better than the small block. It's like putting a 50cc two stroke in a Mustang, it's an insult to the car and what it stands for. I don't even like Mustangs and that would annoy me...

***** No, they're not. My oldest is 59 this year and still going strong. Friends of mine own and run cars over 100 years old. They still work, still run, and still do their job perfectly. Treating cars as consumable is why they're now so shite, and why so many are scrapped needlessly. It's more energy efficient to keep a car on the road for 50 years than it is to make a new one every 20 years, even if the newer one is more fuel efficient. Over its life, my XJ won't put out nearly as much pollution, because it was all made close by, reducing emissions of manufacture, and it's almost all recyclable, no plastics or computer stuff. Excessive consumerism is killing the planet, and killing our cultural diversity. End it now before the eco nutters end it for us.

This is a show about doing silly things with cars that were destined for the junkyard. Consider it recycling. The guys DO know how to properly tune a car. Or restore a car. This show is not about doing things properly. Shoving a supercharger through the hood of a totally inappropriate vehicle is in fact the entire point.

Like my friend had a '92 5.0 Mustang bone stock and it ran something around 14.9-15.0@100mph. Car and Driver rated a 2007 Honda Accord I4 at 16.4@85mph. Midget saw No. The XF is one of the best mid-size saloons on the market. The 5 series might be a bit faster, but the Jag is comfier and has really nice handling with it, and lots of little details that make it a nicer and more interesting thing to sit in for long periods. The XJ is one of the best luxury limo-saloons out there, for similar reasons. The F type is a cracking big sports car, despite the annoyance of no manual option (and so long as you steer clear of the V8 version) and I'd recommend it to anyone who didn't absolutely have to have a clutch pedal. The XK is getting on a bit, but is still a cracking GT, an Aston Martin DB9 in all but price and the luxury hand made feel. Oh, and it doesn't have a V12, which is a pain. The whole range is pretty good, and yes, they do all look fantastic. And, if you look at the top 100 most reliable cars (according to warranty direct) there's a fair few Jags in there, amongst the Japanese stuff. Not many BMWs or Astons or any of Jaguar's competitors. Having free reign on what they do, and sharing with Land Rover has allowed their reliability to shoot through the roof compared to when they were strung up by Ford or BL.

Foxtrot Oscar Dude, get your head out of your own ass. Not every car has to be restored. If one or two cars out of a 100 (just an example) is completely different, its completely fine. Thes particular XJ12 is more interesting and full of character than any other XJ I've seen, since they are all restored and are basically stock. That's boring.

This was the number 1 car to use as a donor vehicle for hotrods in the UK about 30 years ago because it had suspension/brakes/driveshafts that could handle big power, they have great road handling and would beat the pants off any US car of it's day when it came to road handling. It's really slow because someone has removed the original 12 cylinder motor.

They're not really worth all that much once they reach this age. If it was in pristine condition, that would be another story. But the one that they have has rust issues, wiring problems, a non-factory engine in bad shape (at least when this video was made,) and other issues as well.

crazyfvck Oops, I somehow wasn´t aware that this had a non-factory engine. That does change things considerably. But if it had, wouldn´t it really not have been worth 1000$? I know that it would have been a steal on the used car market in Germany, they are quite expensive over here.

  • @crazyfvck

Jeremy J. Yeah at some point in the past a Chevy 350 (5.7L) was installed in the car.. That's why they were able to bolt on the supercharger so easily. If this car had been in decent shape, with the original engine and transmission, I'd expect it to bring $3,000 - $4,000. But that might be optimistic for a 42 year old car... They're not as collectible as older Mustangs, Camaros, etc., at least in the U.S. Really depends on what people are willing to pay for them. As a point of comparison, I just bought a 2003 Jaguar XJR with 90,000 miles on it, very well maintained, and the only issue was 1 or 2 door dings. I paid $8,000 for it. That was originally a $75,000 car, and the '03's are very desirable because that was the last year for that body style. It was also the year that they corrected most of the issues that the cars were having. Even so, I was able to get it for well under $10,000.
