Man, these filmstrips from the 60's bring back classroom memories. The records would occasionally skip where the "ding" occurs, resulting in many a confused teacher after a while. Then again, us kids would try to "mouth-imitate' the dinging sound, so that the teacher would advance the filmstrip at the wrong times and get everything all screwed up. "Just look at these beauties" the record would announce, as the frame would show a woman in a Playtex bra.........

In '62 the Tempest offered the Lemans trim upgrade. In '63 the Lemans was it's own separate model. In '63 and '64 Lemans offered the GTO optional upgrade. By '65 the Tempest, Lemans and GTO were their own separate models.

From what I've read, the GTOs were only offered in convertibles and sport coupes ( B pillar post) when introduced with the rest of the Lemans line in October 1963. The hardtop did not come along until November 1963.

Some cars in the era didn't have a separate locking mechanism. To lock the door you pushed on the inside door handle. If open was up you'd push down to lock, if open was to the rear you'd push forward to lock.

The '64 Tempest's new platform, the GM A platform, was also shared with the Chevrolet Chevelle, Oldsmobile F-85 (later Cutlass) and Buick Special.

I'm no big fan of the 64s but pontiac always surely made the most of what they had to work with...far more attractive proposition than chevrolet..

"A plastic steering wheel is standard." (A useful feature for owners desiring to turn corners.)

Amazing they sold 60,000 GTO's the first year because they really didn't highlight it very much there. I guess that's when you saw someone racing the car on the street and word of mouth took over.

At age 19, I bought a '64 (base) Tempest in Jan.'66 for $1,500. & had it ran flawlessly for 16 years, until it was vandalized & I had to junk it! But, I remember driving a smaller 1963, V-8 version of the Tempest which had massive power! Does anyone remember this type?

Yes, I remember, my old boss Dr Jimmy had one, great man, great car. The 326 engine actually displaced 336ci in 1963 because it was the Pontiac engine block used in GMC trucks so it had a bit more oomph that year. The '63 V8 Tempest was sort of like a '63 GTO.

And everyone could smoke the shit out of the tires. Never drove a Pontiac that wasn't "snotty". Best year of the GTO.

THE SPRINT OHC6 was supposed to be ready for the 64 model, Pontiac couldn't get it done in time.
