Without knowing the details of the relay or without a wiring diagram, you won't. But just for your info most of the relays out there use a DIN standard numbering system. For example, for a 5-pin ISO relay which is very common, pins 86 and 85 are for the coil (86 is + and 85 is -), 30 is the common, 87 is the NO contact and 87a is the NC contact. You could use a voltmeter and observe your readings, but without a diagram you wouldn't know their function.

Someone commented to me that this does not test the relay itself, but only indicates that the receptacle that the relay pins plug into is getting voltage, because the wire that you're touching with the probe is carrying current from that female receptacle, which would allow the current to travel to your probe, just the same as if the relay weren't there at all, and the wires were stuck down into the receptacles. If this is a mistaken conclusion, would you please explain how that is so.

Simple relays have a field positive, field negative and power to load. Jack Morgan, if you want to repair your own car, buy some tools instead of being derrogatory. What he is using is called a Power Probe. You need one to test for continuity, power, ground and to power a circuit. You need a multimeter to do many other tests, but you need to spend a few bucks. The multimeter is the least expensive, but can get up there in price for pro user models or for long term dependabliity.

Sounds like it's time for a wiring diagram. Check out alldata. The battery is what turns on the relay. Nope, the amperage from the battery isn't too high. The relay will only draw the amount of current it needs from the battery unless of course you wire it wrong and then you'll get a different story.

Been doing that for power cables if no plug. Jam wires in socket and put plug on top. Never thought about using it for this though, so thanks. Now why is there three ground and one positive though? And what is checking ohms across a contact going to tell you? The contact can be pitted, burned and yet the ohmeter can pick up a tiny point of resistance and say its good. Push some current through the contact and it will fall on its face. You need to do a voltage drop test across the contact to know for sure of its condition.
