True, but Vrbo should either pull the ad or change the song as a courtesy. They clearly offended a lot of people. I just read UberEats had a similar thing with their ad which had a joke about peanut allergies. Some group got offended, they talked it out and UberEats has since said "we appreciate the insight" and apologized, the original ad is gone now and the joke was edited out. Take the hint Vrbo, I'd at least have some respect for you if you admit you messed up and tried to make it right.

I heard so much whining that I had to look up the ad and see what all the fuss was. Congrats to vrbo for offending the most easily offended people on the planet. Maybe 5-10, some teenagers spray painted “stupid newfies” at spots around the city. Literally Front page news. Maybe 10-15 years ago, Nissan ran an ad for a “Bonavista edition” X-Trail that featured heavily exaggerated Newfie accents. The uproar made me roll my eyes so hard that I almost detached my retinas. Vrbo isn’t breaking new ground here. Congrats on the extra eyeballs.

Understanding the upset requires acknowledging the cultural significance of Newfoundland folk songs. They represent shared history and identity, especially for a community that has faced historical discrimination. While the song may be exempt from intellectual property restrictions, its cultural and emotional value is immeasurable. Using it in a commercial context, especially negatively, can be seen as disrespectful or insensitive. It’s important to remember that cultural sensitivity and respect for others’ heritage is crucial. While some may not see an issue, others’ feelings of upset are valid and should be acknowledged.

It doesn't have to. From Wikipedia: "I'se The B'y" (also I's The Bye) is a traditional Newfoundland folk song/ballad. "I's the B'y" is in the Newfoundland English dialect, and translates to standard English as "I'm the Boy" or "I'm the Guy". The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame decided to honour the song in 2005, officially accepting it as part of the Canadian Song Hall of Fame.[1] @@patrickbennett7002

VRBO over here in the comments apparently losing all the latter group of vacationers which would only ever spend approximately $50 total anyways. Besides, that song has a sexual connotation so it would not be a song that would be taught in elementary school generally. I used to love listening to Alan Mills when he sang in English and in French on CBC radio in the 1950s in northern Ontario. So many Mainlanders don't know a darn thing about Newfoundland including its many wonderful folk songs. It was collected in St John's apparently--the only version ever found. It reminds me of those American folk songs, "Oh, Susannah!", "Oh, my darling Clementine" or "Oh, do you remember sweet Betsy from Pike?" The heroine in all these songs is a country bumpkin, but loved by her swane anyway. They were song at minstrel shows for the entertainment of the crowd who relished the humour.
