I am also an ex-professional ballet dancer as well as being a musician. I have had many, many, many different teachers over the years. One thing I have always believed is that a good teacher can take an otherwise obscure idea and explain it in such a way that the student gets it. One teacher can "explain" things one way, another can "explain" the SAME THING in a different way. And then one teacher comes along and explains it in a way that makes the light bulb go on.

Where have you been hiding all my life, I could have progressed so much further years ago if you were in my life. Of course you were probably not even a thought from your parents minds back years ago when I could have learned something about music theory. I actually learnt relative minors back in the mid 80s from a keyboard player I was in a band with in Germany. He was an amazing musician and really helped me to have an appreciation for theory as a means to communicate with other musicians. You on the other hand just explain it so easily to understand. That the ah-ha moments are almost overwhelming. And this all leads into modes and intervals as well... Thank You...

I already did watch your previous video about circle of 4ths and fifths; it was simpler yet I was able to to grasp and understand the whole concept of it, dissimilar to other videos I had watched, they were all perplexing for me. I'm hoping to see this kind of videos of you in the future to help me and others to improve way we play our instruments and most importantly upgrade the level of our knowledge about these concepts.. A gentle request/suggestion: in addition to chord relationships in a key (scale harmonisation I think?), as requested by another commenter, it would be wonderful to have Gracie's take on simple modulations to other keys, or middle 8s, etc. when songwriting.

F# minor is the natural minor of the A major scale aka Aeolian mode. If you, for instance, begin the scale and keep it as home base for you progression on the D of the A major scale you would be playing whats known as the D lydian. If you know your intervals, each interval is associated with its own particular mode. More importantly is understanding and associating these modes to the tonal qualities they all offer. Not to mention the modes of more exotic or complex scales like the double harmonic major. Its a rather simple, not easy, concept. Good luck, and continue learning!

Its things like this that makes you realise that explaining certain things makes it more baffling and confusing than ever. You write things down you cross them out and still no idea what this circle thing is supposed to do. Yet to find anyone able to explain it without going down every alley and confusing it even more.

I agree. A video on the modes would be a good idea. If we want to be geeky (and I AM geeky) we could say that the major scale is the Ionian mode, and the natural minor scale is the Aeolian mode. If we look at how Gracie mentioned the 6th degree as a way of finding the relative minor scale root note, we can notice that Aeolian is the 6th mode in the list of 7, starting with Ionian. In a way, music is a way to hear beautiful mathematics.

So glad I found your videos. I was stuck in a cycle of frustration back and forth between not really understanding other people's explanations of music theory, and then trying to wing it. You'd think going from playing the cello to improvising on a piano would be easy(they both have strings, right?). Yeah. But thankfully the way you explain how keys work with chords and scales actually made sense to me and I'm no longer drowning in a sea of dissonance. Thank you!
