I just ordered some after watching your video. Looks like it did a good job for you. Cheaper than replacing rollers. Thanks for the video.

This product is also great to rejuvenate the rubber pick-up or feed wheels on printers. If your printer starts double-feeding or grabs the paper but won't fully feed it through the print path, this usually will take care of that. 👍

I am an electronics tech of a few decades repairing reel to reel tape decks, hardened rubber idler wheels are always a problem on the cheaper single motor decks. So just bought a decent pair of gloves to use this stuff on idler wheels and pinch roller from a Sony TC-366 and more to do from a few TC-377 I am refurbishing. I don't think I want to breathe this in either so will rejuvenate them in the open air wearing a filter cartridge type face mask. We all have to die sometime but no need to hasten it unduly, read the precautions, the english ones are first up listed on the bottle.

If I can use you experience for some advice. I'm restoring Standard SR-250 portable reel-to-reel from 196x. My main problem now is massive 10Hz'isch flutter. What is most common reason in such machines? Hardened pinch roller (it's not softest one I had, but it's still able, for a while, to move the tape from stopped spool, by squeezing the tape) or can it be capstan bearing, Flutter seems to be smaller in standing position). What is top 5 in such situations? I checked speed control electronics by replacing it with IC-regulator - no improvement.

Hi, if you have a 10Hz wow and flutter it's probably caused by the pinch roller being out of shape rather than just requiring to be rejuvenated to maintain it's grip. Perhaps it could be bearings that require oiling or freeing up, more than likely though a pinch roller has a distorted shape. This is the problem with one motor machines that rely on rubber pinch rollers to transfer movement to other parts of the tape transport system eventually they just deteriorate completely. This happens sooner rather than later in hot and humid atmospheric conditions , like the tropics.

Used it to restore pinch rollers on a Sony TC-250 reel to reel and a SL-HF750 Super Beta VCR, both are like new again, great for parts that can't be easily replaced anymore.

Oh thank you for that announcement ... bloody hell I did clean my pinch roller about a week ago with IPA ... when I get my Rubber Renew I’ll redo my pinch roller and idlers with this, should be ok if I do this. It sounds like rubber renew nourishes the rubber. Thanks again for the advice much appreciate it buddy !!! haply new year to you and keep enjoying the retro technology.

hey if you want good roller restorer use S-721H-4, this type of restorer uses oils and that can get on your tape, it is usable if you already have it if you clean the roller real good afterwards but id still advise against it if you dont already have it and you want to longest possible life for your tape player

Great Demo... I've got some I'm going to use on a cassette deck's pinch roller. If this stuff doesn't do the trick, I'll try the Wintergreen/ IPA(Isopropyl) method and let it soak for a day or two.

Looks like a very good product. Restoring a Sony TC 377 and I'm looking for a product for this job. I hope it's good for turntable rollers too.

Strat Lad hi I’ve got a TC377 as well, I’ve just cleaned my idlers with IPA as well as the pinch roller and the intermediate drive idler. The intermediate drive idler is slipping so the speed is all over the place and that’s what I’m hoping the rubber renew will fix. Just wondered what issues you have had? I replaced all the belts though with new ones.

Watching this because I'm thinking of using Rubber Renue on a cassette deck pinch roller. Your warning says "don't use IPA on pinch rollers", but the service manuals from Sony say that IPA should be used. Once, for a Walkman, it said use methylated spirits though.

It uses wintergreen oil. Do not use on the pinch rollers unless you want oil on your tapes. Great for idle wheels and slight worn belts that are not stretched or cracked. If your rubber is cracked, you will need to replace the roller. It is possible to sand the rollers, however you must rig something up to spin the pinch roller stationary and have a hands free solution to mechanically slowly apply a light sandpaper to it just until fresh rubber appears. Do this by hand and you will get flat spots.

I use furniture oil to revive plastic and rubber, Pledge "Revive it" by Johnson to be exactly. Really great results also on pinch rollers and the smell of the product is nice. You have to let it soak into the plastic/rubber for a while and after this anything hard (residue) easily came off (wipe it off with a soft cloth) and also removes white spots. To treat pinch rollers, wipe it off inside the machine when operating because you 'scrape' off some of the surface area and this must be done evenly by using the rotation of the roller. Never do this like you do because it is possible that you change the perfectly round surface. The endresult of the surface must be dull, perfectly black and looking like brand new. Clean the capstan with alcohol to be sure there is no oil left. That's how I do it, no need for expensive aggressive rubber renew stuff.

Thanks for this useful video, Darren. Just getting my Technics 1500 Iso-Loop deck back in operation, after being unused for a few years. Wow in PB was painful! Hoping it's simply one or both of the pinch rollers having become hard/smooth and not gripping properly - hopefully that and not the direct drive capstan motor!!! Will order that product, which you seem quite pleased with in use. Meantime, could you please identify the music track you used at top of piece. Sounds like Walter Wanderley, but I don't recognize the tune! Many thanks!

Nice video ~ you do realize, I hope, that the so-called residue that appears as dark stuff on the cloth is, in fact, rubber. Yes, that rubber.

This is basically a clean petrol product with liniment (wintergreen in it) according to the chem specs. So it cleans nicely and then refurbishes the rubber w the oil of winter-green www.techsil.co.uk/media/pdf/TDS/MGCL10003-tds.pdf Not hard to mix yourself or buy similar products directed to car industry (Rubber restore products) . As always in greasing/cleaning Reel to reel: Do not overdo it, take it in steps and see how material react. Rubbers, plastics and metal like aluminium all are based on different receipts hence they react differently.

Just for reference I was thinking about sanding one of my drive wheels but DONT DO THIS unless you have a means of driving the wheel accurately and a means of applying a very light and fine abrasive material with constant pressure AND a for only a few rotations. You run the risk of putting flat spots or making the drive uneven which will cause rumbling and all sorts of horrible problems as well as risking damaging the surface of the rubber.

it could be the pinch roller or the the tape alignment, which means the the position of the pinch roller ( Or arm) is to far in or too far out!

There's no need to take every opportunity to spread internet scarelore. Drinking a cup of coffee does immeasurably greater damage to your liver and kidneys than washing your bare hands with the whole bottle of this stuff. Just don't drink it, and you'll be fine.

@@ThatMontmorency you would have to be exposed to this chemical day after day and weeks to be affected by this product. cleaning and rejuvenating a part or parts for a project comes no where near the threshold of prolonged exposure. Now of course if you live in the state of california............ you will be dead within weeks just by using this deadly man made concoction of industrial sorcery....

Oh for the love of all that's holy, please don't advocate this.. If anything, this works but for a very limited period. You can NOT rejuvenate rubber to it's original properties. Best case scenario: the rubber getting soft. Getting back the flex (permanently) is physically impossible. Period. (Been into vintage hifi and restauration for at least 35 years.)
