Reinventing The SUV | 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Bigger is always better, and to prove the point Chevy stretched the Tahoe's body nearly 7 inches, legroom over 10 inches, and bumped cargo room by a whopping 66%. In addition to being larger in just about every dimension, the new Tahoe has an all-new independent suspension design that checkmates Ford's Expedition. In addition to delivering a more composed ride than before, the Tahoe and Suburban can be equipped with a combination of air suspension and MagneRide dampers that deliver the smoothest ride in a full-size SUV on sale today. Chevy tossed in their 10-speed automatic transmission standard, and if you'd rather burn oil, you'll be able to opt for GM's excellent 3.0L diesel engine later this year. My only complaint? The base engine could use a bit more shove.

Standard American junk. I drove a nicely optioned Lincoln Aviator recently, brand new on the dealer lot. The driver's window made a loud squeal when going up and down, the second row seat sliding button was broken off, and some of the trim was loose. This was on a brand new $73K American luxury car. Absolutely pathetic. GM is just as bad.

It's a shame manufacturers including the ones that use it just not in every SUV that would definitely put the U in utility. Also finally the Tahoe and Suburban have a independent suspension. Better ride and rear cargo and passenger room. The old design was horrendous for families that needed it. Great review Alex 👍🏼

Especially WHEN the a/c goes out after the warranty expires. Used to be about an $800 job, but now costs over $4000 because of component placement. Save $50 on assembly, cost the customer 5x as much for repairs. Plus the extended use of plastic. I'll keep my 2002 Tahoe.

The storage area next to the infotainment system fits sunglasses. I think that is what it is for, since the top area is full of new knobs and switches it didn't have room to fit a sunglasses holder. the compartment actually goes in and up a little so my large framed sunglasses fits perfectly, felt lined as well for protection.

Andrew M there’s also the matter that a lot of features that should be standard on such an expensive vehicle simply aren’t. Radar cruise control? Nope. It’s optional. Ventilated seats? Gotta pay up. Also, the headlight knob was wiggling all around as Alex was turning it, and the trim piece for the middle seatbelt just came right out as he grabbed the belt. That’s the kid of build quality you’d expect in a $10000 subcompact hatchback, not a $50000 full size SUV

Just got a High Country, love it! Agreed the Z71 grill and wheels was a turn off for me. Really didn't want the 6.2 engine, but only way High Country comes. Still don't get how the engine shutting off for 1.8 seconds at a stoplight saves any fuel. Always seems like it shuts off right before time to take off again.

It has Active fuel management on all the cylinders so that all the valves fail at 100,000 miles instead of just two sets, and bright red tow hooks so that you can find them in the dark when it needs to be towed to the dealer. When the quote to repair the air suspension is outrageous, people will still spend a fortune to have it converted to a conventional suspension which is how GM should have designed it in the first place. I'm also certain that it comes with a litany of standard defects like high oil consumption, transmission shudder, and Stabilitrak problems. Buy it, and drive it right to the junkyard so that the materials can be used by a manufacturer that knows how to design a vehicle.

Most trim levels come with the 5.3L engine yet all real life towing test that I have seen are performed using the higher end trims with the 6.2L engine which cost a lot more money. When you do your longer term testing, It would be great if you could actually test the Z71 with its 5.3L engine and available HD tow packages while towing a trailer at close to its max. Tailer tow rating going uphill and downhill. That would be more meaningful as most people would be reluctant to shell out the $$$ for the Premier or the High Country trim lines.

They’d have to do a lot to make me ever consider one of these things. I hate the appearance of the new Tahoe and Suburban (all the ridiculous looking grilles are over the top). They’ve gone insane with the pricing too. My grandmother has a last-Gen fully loaded Tahoe and driving it is a chore. It feels like it’s even more massive than it is. I drive large trucks on occasion (dump trucks, semis, etc.) and they feel easier to place in your lane than the Tahoe. The outward visibility, like GM’s Silverado pickups, is poor. The hood was taller than the windshield glass and prevented you from seeing the road ahead. Inside quality is middling at best. I haven’t driven or seen a new Tahoe in person, but I have driven it’s cousin, the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500. I can only imagine the overall experience isn’t that much of an improvement on those vehicles. When I drove the GMC Sierra 1500 Denali with the 6.2L V8 and 10-speed automatic I wasn’t impressed. The 10-speed transmission occasionally stumbles and shifts roughly and it’s constantly shifting. I prefer ZF’s 8HP over the GM/Ford 10-speed. The 5.3L and 6.2L V8 don’t offer the potent low end thrust competitors’ turbocharged V6/I6 and turbocharged V8 engines offer. For the amount of money GM wants for a Tahoe or Suburban today, I would much rather have a BMW X5 or X7 with either I6 or V8, Range Rover Sport w/ the Supercharged V8, upcoming LR Defender 130, Mercedes GLE/GLS, Tesla Model X, or Audi SQ7. I just can’t imagine paying over $80K for a TAHOE! I remember when you could get a Suburban for less than $30K... it wasn’t even that long ago. GM has nearly increased the cost of their trucks and SUVs by 75% in the past 15 years. A base Tahoe now costs nearly $51K! Way too much in my opinion.

  • @ktpinnacle

Within a year, you'll be able to regularly get 10-15% off MSRP, which should help those that have just discovered that vehicles depreciate. As soon as Nissan and Toyota discover that it's 2020 and they might consider investing in a new version of their SUVs instead of marking up 2000 technology to 2020 levels, they'll be pricing their rigs at this level too. The GM and Ford pricing for their top end rigs put them in Land Cruiser territory, but it's tough to by an LC with 2010 tech and design in it. If GM gets dinged for design, so should Toyota.
