The degree of rampant knee-jerk reactionism in the comments section is startling, but not unexpected. Most of them involve either impractical amounts of idealism or revulsion. Honestly, I'd think the steady, sustainable shifting of capitalism toward a state more inherently compatible with humanity would be seen as ideal.

@tenou213....history shows a steady shifting of capitalism toward a state more compatible with a VERY small portion of Humanity.... but not exactly HOW sustainable it might prove to be in the face of all the pain and suffering caused by the steady torrent of blood baths.... hunger hammerings.... and epidemic experimentations leveled against the LARGER portion of HUMANITY.... by way of 'securing' said compatibility of.... BY and.... FOR.... the smallest portion of humanity.

Wow, that was an awesome talk. Nice flow. I do not agree with the monetary system though, no matter the social system. The use of money reinforces people to be competitive. Not cooperative. Then people can't trust each other.

More people have been pulled out of poverty at the expense of the working middle class. Private banking policies shift the money being created from the lower 80% the richest 20%. So as more money supply expands for everyone, a higher % of the Money supply continues to be siphoned to the top. It is designed to be that way. It grows monopolies, allows private owners of limited natural resources, and gives private corporations power over the people and needs of society as a whole. Public banking gives the profits back to the community. It sets community and environmental needs as priority. Money being created is owned by the citizens instead of private shareholders of banks and monopolies. Entire cities can combine resources and efforts to accomplish any objective by issuing the money to facilitate the creation of goods and services to succeed. If we had a system like this for a century, then quality, respect, collective efforts, and democracy would be far ahead of where it is now thanks to greedy capitalism. It has played a part and can still. . But not as the main system that drives humanity.

I think the flaw in this argument is that the speaker assumes that the human condition would NOT have improved without Capitalism..... but the sad truth about any system is that if it is initiated - there is no way of ever seeing how things would have been under a different system... It is Naive to assume that the current system has created better conditions than an alternate system MAY have. TO say that we are "100 times better than we were" DOES NOT PROVE THAT WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN "200 times better than we were" if we had cooperated rather than competed. If we had shared rather than hoarded. if we had stayed at home rather than steeling the land of others. If we had reduced our birthrate rather than breed humans for armies.

capitalism has slowed people down. The fact that he doesnt consider anything that has slowed down human development shows that he went to one too many meditation courses without considering the fact THAT THERES A WHOLE F***ING WORLD OF S**** AROUND HIM.

The speaker didn't assume anything.... he mealy stated what happened at specific times throughout history that contributed towards the rapid change in our existence. .... as for not being able to see the effects of capitalism in comparison to alternative systems I think this could be observed as he said by comparison standards of living in countries like china that adopted the modle at a later date than the west.....

URMyTorment Well we could look at the tiny things that helped us improve over time, stuff that has been implemented because it just happens to work, and hence you (and all of us) have probably been raised with it and we dont need to consider it again, except when it doesnt work. That doesnt stop us implementing wrong things, telling each other its 100% right, nonono. We keep going round in circles because of people like the speaker in this video always stating the most hand wavey ideas ever. so the model of capitalism being implemented later directly means china is more economically diverse? I have a feeling that overall its a bit harder to control than just with the capitalism system, cuz it certainly didnt stop old time mafia's in china.. Things can get better much faster, a revolution of ideas, tech, or with the law, anything listed here brings upon a new era. Get all 3 right/complete in one go and Ill bet you that place prospers sustainably and happily. In fact, I think thats what the speakers hand wavey comments are essentially about, right?

With capitalism, when a trade is being performed, both sides believe they are benefiting by the trade. I think it is morally wrong to perform a trade if you think the other side isn't really benefiting even though they think they are. We have to be conscious of the others benefits.

This a magnificent and fascinating tale of accomplishment since for it to be true you have to ignore the genocide of the natives of what was to become North America as well as the destruction of African, Chinese, Asian and other cultures. One has to go to great lengths to ignore the poverty created, death and horror of the slave trade to suggest the success of "capitalism"; only an idiot would make such shorted sighted comments in the face of the facts. This lecture is a fool's folly.

Increase in IQ rate doesn't mean becoming advanced in materialism. It actually means to becomes more conscious of our ourselves. Seeing total reality means seeing that there are four real problems(Birth, Old-age, Disease and Death), which nobody can eradicate on material activities. It can done by becomes conscious of our nature, our true self! We are not living in most peaceful time, people are fighting for basic things which is everyone's right. Living harmony with nature, see what industrialization has done to this world. Pollution and creation of unnecessary necessities. Our challenges are not new, they are common and same for everyone. Repeated Birth, Old-age, disease and death. Because businesses can not find solutions for these problems, they dont consider it as real problems. Everyone who is reading this comment, please think for a moment if we need happiness or we need these so called material luxuries which are futile in nature.

I agree that capitalism is the greatest monetary system in the history of the world, and that it has lifted more people out of poverty in the last 200 years than any other system could or will ever do. However, American capitalism was founded when America had a moral foundation. As American morality collapses, so does it's ability to provide the world with prosperity. The only system of morality that makes morality possible is one that is Universal, Unchanging, and Ultimate in authority.

Slaves have been owned not just in capitalistic societies but also monarchical, feudalistic and communistic. To blame capitalism on slavery is to miss the point. I regard capitalism as requiring voluntary trade, not involuntary. When a slave doesn't want to be a slave (I can't imagine why it would) then the trading of its labor isn't voluntary.

So if I go to the farmer and pay him money for some eggs, we are not cooperating? If I get my money by building houses for people, are we not also cooperating? Or are people cooperating only when someone makes them work for someone else without anything for themselves? I see capitalism benefiting people on both sides of a transaction. If I take money from someone else to give to another, there is a loser and a winner, but with voluntary trade, both sides win.

Talking idly about consciousness is always a massive selling point for common people Ahh lets end the delusion, because your viewpoints have been drilled into you environmentally, but regulated to a horribly slow pace by social norms. Im sorry, let go of these ideas, learn right from wrong on your own. Funnily enough, school gave you that style of learning which is why school is now known to be a place for unintelligent people, too many kids care too much about being the cool kid when the school is just for keeping them out of their parents ways. Use schools (and universities pah, feckin elitist logophilic idiots) for boosting intelligence, making their minds active rather than, say letting the girls in school get over encumbered by these norms and start caring for beauty more. AT 4:20 you say that businesses "Create value" and that "purchase is voluntary" these are ancient ideas from way back when capitalism seemed like a good idea - Now in current times - If you DO NOT use "Planned obsolescence" in other words "create Failure" YOUR business will do fine - but your INDUSTRY will die! ! ! Imagine a truly efficient public transportation system - there will be little demand for cars - the car companies and tire companies had to buy up 80 us light rail systems and destroy them in order to ensure the lasting market for cars! Planned obsolescence at it's best - thank god we had all those auto plant jobs ...... NOT! Why do you think light bulbs only lasted 1000 hrs for so many decades - it's because the manufacturers were not allowed to create one that lasted longer - they would be fined by the light bulb cartel~ there are records of these fines and rules among the few companies who produced light bulbs. Im quite shocked by the talker not considering how defeatist he sounds towards planned obsolescence, What do we do about the issues of the people in charge favouring themselves? His instructions and facts are quite hand wavey, like on IQ and to "open the hidden potential" when we are raised with delusions coorporations want to drill into us... The nerve of him asking people to start thinking, ask the governments & coorporations of the world to stop f***ing things up first, then maybe he himself can start thinking of methods rather than me having to point these things out. The potential is in him to do that, but he decided to do a meaningless ted talk instead.

This is polemic, not reason. We know for example that socialist systems are capable of similar achievements when it comes to "lifting people out of poverty". One may as well ascribe al these things to Science or Education, in fact those would be more reasonable polemics.

Forget about the contributions of trade unions and governmental regulations. Neglect tax heavens problems, lobbying, natural resources exploitation, psycho-social risks? Historically, hasn't capitalism been built based on human exploitation (slavery)? Such issues are problems are very often absent from those “thinkers/talkers” who have a romantic relationship with capitalism :) But hé, that's “ok”.

This person has no idea what he's talking about! One example: environmentalism had been dormant since Silent Spring. Uh, that book came out in 1962. It was the start of that era of environmentalism, not its end. And claiming that it is now clear that free market capitalism is best, and that everyone acknowledges this, is just ridiculous. Stick to what you know, buddy.

Capitalism literally cannot live forever. Like us, it has a time to die.
