Reich Caravan Mover Roller Re-grit

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows the process of removing the epoxy resin/grit coating on the early model Reich caravan mover, the cleanup, preparation and re-coat and re-gritting of the rollers. I am in Australia cannot to get re-grit kits from the UK so had to find a suitable alternative product, locally - which I did. This video looks at the process of refurbishing the rollers.

Hello There i am the owner of Regrit-it in the UK and the reason for not sending to Australia is the Resin we use is Highly Flammable , Hazardous and gives off a strong smell when in liquid form and if the kit gets stopped at customs it will be destroyed therefore we would have to refund you and the postage cost to Australia is quite expensive and any profit made on selling the kit would be gone and more in refunding you so it is not worth the risk which is unfortunate for us as there is a big market out there for the DIY regritting kits as we also sell Regritting kits to regrit potato peelers and the brake rollers for garages that do MOTs . We are looking for self employed people or people wanting to start their own business either selling the kits as we do or going out there and offering the regritting service to caravan owners, Takeaway owners or garage owners. We would just sell you the details on where to buy the products, quantities for each kit ,everything needed to run yourself a very easy to do business. We can only apologise for not sending to Australia and hope this explains why and the reason for not giving out details on the grit used etc is people wanting to copy for free when it has taken a long time to find the right Grit, Resin and Hardener we use

Hello Stephen, thats all fine you saying this now and I understand the Epoxy and customs issue but you didnt offer any alternative or partial solution at the time and in reality all I needed as I think I said on this video was to purchase the grit and I could source an epoxy locally as I did. The big issue was only ever the grit really. Left with no solution in Australia, as I am sure were other people, I produced this video to provide information on how to extend the life of their movers in Australia. The grit is still a problem as its not available in small quantities (only 25Kg bags) so you could offer to supply and ship just the grit to people.

@@timterry8714 i apologise if took the wrong way but to be honest there is one other company in the uk selling caravan regrit kits and they do slightly different but copied my idea and are not very nice peopleto deal with so i dont want to give my details out.Theres nothing to them really but like kentucky fried chickens secret recipe ,its only known by 2 people but at end of the day its only 11 ingredients of spices but they have build a global business out of 11 spices.I know regritting kits nothing like that but its my business and sell a lot of them so why would i want to give details away ,i had to do the homework in the beginning 15 years ago .If you really want to know or you supply people in australia emil me your private email address and i can help you. My kits are used on garage MOTs as they are called in the UK to test a vehicles brakes so if works on them all week will work on a caravan mover roller being used a few times a year. check out my other websites where the kits are used www.regrit-it.com ,www.regrit-it.co.uk and www.brakerollerregritting.co.uk,same resin and hardener just different grit used on each one

@@timterry8714 Hi Terry, i buy in 25 kg sacks ,sending small amounts from the uk to australia will probably be more exopensive than buying a 25 kg sack yourself over there and selling yourself in smaller quantities, just offer the small quantities on ebay, facebook market place over there and be a lot more cost effective that way

Well done Tim. Good job done. I would like to mention that I think that the height of the mover looks set too high up on the wheels which is where most of your problems stem from .Not the distance from the wheel. The mover should be on the centre line of the wheel.Because yours is too high when you put more pressure on the wheel , the wheel moves down and away from the roller therefore reducing the grip.

Indeed this is true Jim. In an ideal world the mover would be mounted dead centre of the axle. Also the bracket arrangement isnt good on this van and flexes to much under load. I have since changed vans and now have a dual axle and twin movers now installed. These have issues also as the motors dont like trying to turn a dual axle van as you are essentially dragging one lot of wheels sideways. I think also that these movers were designed for the lightweight European and UK vans not the heavy vans we have in Australia. That aside the movers do the job for me most of the time. We are about to replace the grit rollers on this van (now owned by a relation of mine) with Aluminium rollers.

Hi Alexa, The product that I used is a locally manufactured product here in Australia so would not be available in other countries as it is not exported. All countries have similar product readily available. They did tell me that it is known as "artists resin" which is just a product name to appeal to the artist community. It has no special characteristics and is similar to resin used in manufacturing and repairing surfboards, etc. Resin comes in 2 parts "A" & "B" and is mixed 50/50% or equal parts only when you are ready to use it as it will commence hardening within 30 mins or thereabouts and will set hard in 12-24 hrs. Hope that helps. Cheers Tim

Hi SnortTroll, Yes it has worked well so far and no sign of it having any issue at this time. Just finished another trip away for a month. I dont use it a lot but its very handy when I do need it to get into a tricky spot and always at home to park it in my drive with the smallest amount of space taken up. I will need to mover the roller position as its seems to be a bit far away from the wheel and it can flex a bit on the bracket arrangement. Yes I could have changed these over to the newer aluminium rollers but they are very expensive and can be difficult to replace given the age of this mover. This solution has worked very well. Sand that is generally available is not course enough or inconsistent in size and that was one of the grit solutions I looked at but I couldnt get anything locally that was close to being the correct size required or as I say consistent. Yes I could have made it shorter but I think if you are going to tackle doing something like this the greater the understanding the better, I put it off for a couple of years as I hadnt seen this done through the various stages and any "gotchas" along the way so yep but long but you can always skip over to the end if youve seen enough.

or make a roller from alu and machine sharper treads into it. no grit needed.

  • @timterry8714

Yes thats another way of doing it but expensive considering the age of this mover. Also the rollers may not be easily removable given the age of this particular unit. The re-gritting is not expensive or a difficult job once you know how to do it and what to use and there is little risk of damaging the unit as could be the case with roller replacement

    what about sand and epoxy

  • @timterry8714

I investigated sand but the grains are generally too inconsistent in size and I think you would have to find some specialist provider. I believe also that its not as strong and can breakdown easily and that lets water get in under the epoxy which starts the degradation process and parts of the coating start coming off as you could see in the start of this video (in this case it was the iron based grit rusting that let water in).

I don't know definatively. I scrapped some old grit off the roller and took it to a place that specialised in abrasives and they found me a comparative product.

Sorry Peter it was a long time ago and I sourced it locally from an abrasives supplier In Brisbane. They normally only deal in large 20Kg bags but he agreed to give me a few "sample" bags of a suitable grit which they wholesale. I took in a part of the grit that had peeled off so he could look at it. Are you in Brisbane??
